After defeating China women’s team 6-1 in their last group stage game in the ongoing 2023 Women’s World Cup, the reigning European champions, England will now face the Nigeria Super Falcons in the round of 16.
The Three Lionesses of England took their form from the European Championship to the 2023 Women’s World Cup and they have been defeating every team they come across convincingly so far at the global competition.
In their opening Group stage game, England beat Haiti 1-0 and followed that up with a 1-0 victory over Denmark. They crowned their World Cup group stage campaign with a stunning 6-1 victory over China to finish top of Group D with a perfect 9 points and eight goals.
Interestingly, out of their three group-stage games, they have conceded just a goal which means that they are as good in defense as in their attack.
Monday, August 7, 2023, at 8:30 a.m the Three Lionesses will face the Super Falcons in the quarter-finals of the 2023 Women’s World Cup co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
The Nigerian team would have avoided England if they had finished top of Group B. Unfortunately for them, they drew with the Republic of Ireland during their last game which forced them to finish second, a point behind first-placed Australia.
Hence, the Super Falcons who have never gone beyond the quarter-finals stage of the tournament will have to beat England to stand a chance of reaching the last eight and probably break the semi-final jinx.

Police To Probe Officials At Imo, Bayelsa, Kogi Elections
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed an investigation into the conduct of officials of the police force deployed to serve in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa states at the just concluded governorship elections.
Egbetokun ordered the investigation due to increased allegations of violence and electoral malpractice levelled by opposition against the Independent National Electoral Commission and other stakeholders of the just-concluded governorship polls.
A statement by Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, detailed that, “In another development, however, the IGP notes, with concern, pockets of incidences that occurred during the elections and charged the Electoral Offences Desk Officers, under the supervision of the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, to commence immediate investigations into these incidences.”
However, against the allegations of malpractice, the Police boss further said that “the electoral process in the three states transpired seamlessly, defying earlier threat assessment and projected challenges from various quarters. He acknowledges the exceptional efforts of the security personnel in maintaining law and order, safeguarding the electoral process, and ensuring the safety of citizens.”
Nigeria Updates recalls that while Civil Society Organisations commended the security agencies for their conduct at the off-cycle elections that took place over the weekend, they faulted the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for failing to solidify the faith of Nigerians in the country’s electoral process with its conduct at the off-cycle elections.

Many prospective couples expressed gratitude to the Kano State governor for providing the opportunity for them to get married in their lifetime.
