Aiyedatiwa Approves N350m Scholarship and Bursary Scheme for 12,000 Ondo Students
Ondo State Governor, Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has approved N350 million for the payment of the 2025 scholarship and bursary scheme to support indigenes of the state studying in higher institutions across Nigeria.
The funding, announced on Tuesday, will cover about 12,000 students—an increase from last year’s N335m disbursed to 11,200 students.
The bursary and scholarship package includes special provisions for medical and law students as well as students living with disabilities.
Expanded support for education
Last year, Aiyedatiwa’s administration raised the annual bursary from N10,000 to N20,000. Students with disabilities were awarded N75,000 each, while scholarship recipients received N100,000 each.
The governor described the 2025 approval as part of a broader commitment to education as a foundation for development.
“Many of our students face significant financial challenges in pursuing their academic dreams. That is why we have these bursary and scholarship awards, as well as financial assistance, to provide support, alleviate financial burdens, and enable our students to focus on their studies,” Governor Aiyedatiwa said.
“These awards are a testament to our commitment to investing in the future of our State and our country. We must ensure that our students have access to quality education and the necessary support to excel in their academic pursuits,” he added.
OSOPADEC scheme precedes approval
The announcement comes barely two weeks after the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) began disbursing its 2023/2024 scholarship and bursary payments, with 4,837 indigent students from its mandate areas benefitting.
Observers note that both interventions are designed to reduce the financial pressures faced by young people and to sustain enrolment levels in higher education.
Broader impact
Education analysts in the state say the increased bursary reflects a growing recognition of the economic strain on students and parents. The scheme is also seen as a political commitment by Aiyedatiwa, who has consistently linked education to the state’s long-term development.

Nigeria Customs Commissions Modern Classroom Block at Kirikiri Correctional Centre
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has commissioned a modern block of classrooms at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos.
The project, delivered by the Kirikiri Lighter Terminal (KLT) Area Command, forms part of the Service’s corporate social responsibility efforts under the Customs Cares framework.
The facility was unveiled on Wednesday, 11 February 2026.
What the Project Includes
The newly commissioned structure goes beyond classrooms.
It includes fully furnished learning spaces, a borehole for water supply, water closets, a well-equipped library and a functional Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centre.
Officials say the aim is to strengthen access to education and vocational skills for inmates as part of rehabilitation efforts.
Why It Matters
Education is widely regarded as a key factor in reducing repeat offences and improving reintegration after incarceration.
Many Nigerian correctional facilities face infrastructure challenges, including limited access to structured learning and digital literacy programmes.
Customs officials say the intervention is designed to bridge part of that gap within the Kirikiri custodial centre.
The project was initiated under the leadership of the then Customs Area Controller, now Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs, Eghosa Joy Edelduok.
She described the facility as more than infrastructure.
According to her, it represents “a beacon of hope and renewal for inmates”.
She also expressed appreciation to the Comptroller-General of Customs for his leadership, and to officers, partners and stakeholders who supported the project.
Leadership Transition and Continuity
Following ACG Edelduok’s promotion and redeployment, Deputy Comptroller Bolaji Lukman Adigun assumed leadership of the Command as Acting Customs Area Controller.
He sustained the project and oversaw its completion.
In his remarks, he said the facility provides hope, practical skills and learning opportunities for inmates.
He described the outcome as evidence of “continuity, dedication, and teamwork in public service”.
Customs CG Speaks
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, PhD, formally commissioned the facility.
He reaffirmed that the Service would continue implementing social interventions aligned with sustainable development priorities.
According to him, these include education, health, water provision and literacy initiatives.
He commended ACG Edelduok for what he described as her foresight and commitment.
He added that the project demonstrates the Service’s resolve to go beyond trade facilitation and border security.
Officials say the CG also toured the facility after the commissioning ceremony.
Correctional Service Reaction
The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Sylvester Nwakuche, was represented at the event by Deputy Comptroller-General Amos Kupan.
Mr Kupan praised the initiative, describing it as a clear demonstration of corporate social responsibility and support for the Correctional Service’s rehabilitation mandate.
He said the facility would enhance the learning environment within the custodial centre and strengthen both educational and vocational training programmes.
He also highlighted the partnership between the two institutions as an example of collaboration in nation-building and human capital development.
What’s Next?
Customs officials say the Customs Cares framework will continue to drive community-focused projects across commands nationwide.
For inmates at Kirikiri, the immediate focus will be integrating the classrooms, library and ICT centre into ongoing literacy and vocational programmes.

Ogun to Build ₦1bn AI Digital Classroom at Remo Secondary School
Ogun State Government has announced plans to build a 900-capacity, Artificial Intelligence-enabled digital learning complex at Remo Secondary School in Sagamu.
Governor Dapo Abiodun disclosed the plan during activities marking the school’s 80th anniversary.
He said the proposed ₦1bn facility is designed to strengthen technology-based education and equip students with skills for a knowledge-driven global economy.

The announcement comes as Nigerian states face growing pressure to modernise public education and align with global digital standards.
Artificial Intelligence and robotics are increasingly shaping industries, from finance to agriculture.
Governor Abiodun said the project builds on existing smart-education efforts at the school.
He noted that Remo Secondary School already has a functional resource centre and a robotics laboratory.
According to him, the goal is to nurture innovation and digital competence among students.
Funding and Government Commitment
The governor pledged ₦100m in financial support for the school.
He stated that ₦50m, representing half of the amount, would be released immediately to begin development work.
Abiodun also assured stakeholders that at least one of the outlined projects would be fully completed before the end of his administration.
Upgrades to Labs and Hostels
Beyond the AI complex, the state government said it has upgraded the school’s science laboratories.
Officials say the labs are now equipped with modern facilities to improve practical learning and safety.
Renovation works have also been completed on the male and female hostels.
The government said the upgrades aim to improve accommodation standards, enhance security, and support students’ well-being.
Members of the school’s old students’ association welcomed the announcement.
They said alumni remain committed to supporting projects that preserve the institution’s legacy.
A School with Heritage
Describing Remo Secondary School as a symbol of enduring heritage, Abiodun said the anniversary celebration was more than a milestone.
He said the institution has played a long-standing role in shaping leaders and professionals across Nigeria.
The governor added that the school has been recognised as one of Ogun State’s model schools.
He urged students to remain focused on their studies and uphold strong moral values.
What’s Next
The government has not announced a timeline for the completion of the AI complex.
Stakeholders say attention will now turn to funding transparency, contractor selection, and implementation.
If completed as planned, the facility could become one of the largest AI-driven learning centres in a public secondary school in the state.

APC Chieftain Demands Withdrawal of JSS1 History Book Over Alleged Igbo Exclusion
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has urged South-East governors to demand the confiscation of a revised JSS1 textbook titled Living History, alleging that it excludes the Igbo ethnic group from Nigeria’s history.
Chief Eze, a former National Publicity Secretary of the defunct New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP), also called for the dismissal of the Minister of Education, Dr Morufu Alausa, and the arrest and prosecution of the book’s author, J.M. Itsekuke.
The call followed the circulation of a viral video showing excerpts from the textbook, which Chief Eze described as “divisive, satanic and full of deceit”.
What the APC chieftain is saying
Reacting to the video, Chief Eze questioned how a history textbook for Nigerian students could omit what he described as one of the country’s major ethnic groups.
“I learnt that this divisive, satanic and deceitful revised edition of the book for JSS1 students, is even catalogued by the National Library of Nigeria, and yet we have Governors in the South-East.
“How could the South-East Governors keep quite over this national hatred and disgrace, which is deliberately championed by the President Bola Tinubu led APC government,” Eze queried.
He accused the author of deliberately promoting ethnic hatred.
“I condemn both the author and the Minister of Education for approving and embarking on such an idiotic voyage of hatred called ‘Living History’ of Nigeria without mentioning the third major tribe in Nigeria.
“That book is an exercise in futility, a wasted nonsensical effort, specifically authored to provoke the Igbo race; it should henceforth be withdrawn from further circulation as a matter of urgency.”
Calls for sanctions
Chief Eze demanded the removal of the education minister, warning that continued silence could be interpreted as official policy.
“At this point, I demand the removal of the Education Minister, Dr Morufu Alausa or else this will be counted as a policy statement by this administration to eradicate the Igbos from Nigeria’s history.”
He also called for the arrest and prosecution of the book’s author.
“While condemning the author for painstakingly exhibiting high level of hatred for the Igbos and ignorance by deliberately not mentioning the Igbo ethnic group in his jaundiced piece of garbage, Eze called for the arrest and prosecution of the author, J.M Itsekuke.”
Allegations against the Tinubu administration
Chief Eze linked the controversy to broader claims of political marginalisation.
“I’m not surprised that this kind of wickedness and hatred of the highest order, for the Igbos, can resurface during the administration of President Tinubu who is not concerned about what the Igbos are going through under his administration,” Eze said.
He added that the textbook reinforced perceptions in some quarters that the administration was hostile to the South-East.
What’s next
As of publication, the Federal Ministry of Education has not responded publicly to the allegations, while South-East governors are yet to issue a joint statement on the matter.
Education stakeholders say any review or withdrawal of the book would likely require formal assessment by curriculum authorities.
