Aiyedatiwa urges APC to target one million votes for Tinubu in Ondo ahead of 2027 election

Published

on

The governor of Ondo State, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has called on members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to intensify grassroots mobilisation, declaring that the party must secure one million votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

He made the appeal during a stakeholders’ meeting in Akure, where party leaders gathered to prepare for upcoming congresses and strategise ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Aiyedatiwa said the push for votes must begin at the ward level, stressing that elections are decided at polling units rather than online platforms.

“Go to the ward and polling units. That is where votes are. Elections are not won on social media or through hype,” he said.

Why it matters

The governor’s target signals early political mobilisation within the ruling party, nearly two years before the next general elections.

Ondo State is considered a strategic state in Nigeria’s South-West political landscape, and a strong showing for the APC could reinforce support for President Tinubu in the region.

The call also reflects growing emphasis on grassroots politics, voter registration, and internal party unity as key factors in electoral success.

Congress preparations and party unity

Aiyedatiwa told party members that preparations were underway for the APC’s zonal congress scheduled for March 25 and the national convention expected later in the month.

He noted that the party could adopt either direct primaries or consensus arrangements, adding that leaders had already worked on a “unity list” in consultation with national stakeholders.

The governor urged members to align with decisions taken by party leadership and maintain cohesion.

“This is your government. You voted and mobilised others to vote. You should not abandon it. Stand by it and support it,” he said.

Focus on grassroots mobilisation

The governor emphasised the importance of expanding party membership and capturing more eligible voters.

He urged members to prioritise voter engagement at the ward level, warning against over-reliance on media campaigns.

He also highlighted recent amendments to Nigeria’s Electoral Act, which he said had strengthened internal party processes and reduced external interference in primaries.

Party leadership reacts

Ondo APC Chairman, Babatunde Kolawole, described the responsibility of strengthening the party as a collective effort.

He reassured members that the leadership would remain inclusive and aligned with national directives.

Kolawole also stressed that unity would be critical to achieving electoral success in 2027.

What’s next

The APC’s upcoming zonal congress and national convention are expected to shape party structures and leadership ahead of the next election cycle.

Political observers say how the party manages internal consensus and mobilisation efforts could influence its performance in Ondo State and beyond.

Atiku Loses Aide Ifeanyi Izeze as APC Chieftain Eze Describes Death as “Shocking”

Published

on

A chieftain of Nigeria’s ruling party, Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has expressed condolences to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar following the death of his aide, Ifeanyi Izeze.

Mr Eze described the death as “shocking” and “devastating”, saying Nigeria had lost a respected media strategist at a critical time.

Why it matters

Mr Izeze was widely regarded as a key figure in political communications, having worked closely with Mr Atiku during past presidential campaigns.

His death, analysts say, removes a seasoned voice from Nigeria’s already complex political media space, where messaging and strategy play a crucial role in shaping public opinion.

Eze’s tribute: “We have lost an asset”

In a condolence message, Mr Eze said the late aide’s death came as a personal and national loss.

“The news of the death of my friend and brother, Pastor Ifeanyi Izeze assaulted my earlobes. It is painful to lose such an enigma, resourceful and communication strategist, at a time his services were needed most by our Principal.”

He added that Mr Atiku had lost “an asset when it comes to media management”.

“Our consolation lies in the fact that death is a certain end for mankind,” he said.

Mr Eze also prayed for strength for the former vice president and the family of the deceased.

A career in political media

Mr Eze recalled working closely with Mr Izeze during the 2007 presidential campaign under the now-defunct Action Congress (AC).

According to him, the late media strategist managed a team of prominent figures, including Lai Mohammed, with professionalism.

“As the Manager of Atiku’s Media Team… the late Izeze proved himself as a true manager of men and resources,” Mr Eze said.

“With great and sound minds… he was able to manage us all professionally without any of us complaining.”

He described Mr Izeze as “admirable, visionary, focused, upright and fearless”.

Personal loss and final moments

Mr Eze said he remained in contact with the late aide until shortly before his death, describing their relationship as close.

“Since then, we have continued to keep in touch with each other till this sad news of his death,” he said.

He added that he was “totally devastated”, noting that Mr Izeze had read his recent messages but did not respond.

“Death, you are totally unfair to me by plucking away a dear friend and brother.”

Mr Eze also shared a recent message sent by the late aide, which contained prayers and words of encouragement.

Reflections on Nigeria’s future

Mr Eze said he last spoke with Mr Izeze about two weeks ago, discussing ideas on Nigeria’s political direction.

“Right now, I’m left without a great and inspiring partner. May your soul rest in peace,” he said.

He also commended Mr Atiku for recognising the late aide’s contributions, describing him as a “pioneer member” of his media team.

What’s next

There has been no official announcement regarding funeral arrangements at the time of publication.

Political observers expect more tributes from across party lines, given Mr Izeze’s influence in Nigeria’s media and political circles.

Ini Archibong urges constructive dialogue with Umo Bassey Eno administration in Akwa Ibom State

Published

on

Ini Archibong, Strategy Director of Chastest Consult, has urged stakeholders in Akwa Ibom State to engage the administration of Governor Umo Bassey Eno through constructive dialogue aimed at strengthening governance and development.

Speaking to journalists after a consultative meeting in Abuja, Archibong said citizens, political actors and civil society groups must balance recognition of government achievements with honest and informed criticism.

He stressed that governance improves when citizens participate actively and responsibly in public discussions.

“Akwa Ibom belongs to all of us — it is not the exclusive property of any one individual, party, or administration,” Archibong said.

“Every stakeholder — whether within the APC, the opposition, civil society, or the diaspora — has a right and a responsibility to speak up.”

He added that discussions about governance should be based on facts and carried out with civility.

Why it matters

Political debate and public criticism are common in Nigerian state politics, especially as governments pursue infrastructure and economic reforms.

Analysts say calls for constructive engagement reflect growing concern about polarisation in political discourse.

Archibong argued that criticism should focus on improving governance rather than scoring political points.

“There is a difference between a constructive opposition and a destructive one,” he said.

“No governor knows it all. Governor Eno himself would benefit from a robust, honest, and engaged opposition.”

According to him, effective opposition should challenge government policies with evidence and propose alternatives.

Development projects highlighted

Archibong praised several projects under the administration of Governor Umo Bassey Eno, saying they could strengthen the state’s economy and global competitiveness.

He cited investments in education infrastructure, the Ibom Model Farms programme, and the construction of a new jetty in Oron.

Other projects mentioned include shoreline protection works, cold storage facilities for fishing communities and upgrades to the Akwa Ibom International Airport, ahead of planned international flight operations in April 2026.

He also referenced tourism investments such as the ARISE Palm Resort, which he said could generate significant annual revenue once fully operational.

“These are not just projects. They are foundations,” Archibong said.

“My support for this administration is rooted in a desire to see these foundations translate into a state that can compete globally.”

Conditional support and accountability

Despite his praise, Archibong said his support for the state government is not unconditional.

He emphasised that constructive criticism remains necessary to improve governance and ensure accountability.

“I am not here to be a cheerleader. I am here as a stakeholder who wants results,” he said.

“Where the Governor gets it right, I will say so loudly. And where there is room for improvement, I will say that too.”

Archibong said feedback should be delivered through appropriate channels and with the intention of improving outcomes for residents.

Appointment of Raymond Abia welcomed

Archibong also commended the appointment of Raymond Abia as Senior Special Adviser to the governor on Inter-Governmental Affairs.

He described the appointment as a strategic move that could strengthen coordination between government institutions and international partners.

“Raymond Abia has served creditably in both the public and private sectors,” Archibong said.

“His experience in the oil and gas industry and his international networks make him exceptionally suited for this role.”

Political backdrop

The remarks follow a recent meeting of the Arise with Renewed Hope Initiative chapter in the Federal Capital Territory.

The group swore in advisory and sub-committee members tasked with mobilising support ahead of the APC National Congress and backing the political leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Godswill Akpabio, and Governor Umo Bassey Eno.

Observers say such meetings reflect growing political organisation ahead of future elections and policy debates.
