Arc. Olubukunola Ejiwunmi Advocates Unity Through Inclusive Architecture at NIA Lecture
Former President of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), Arc. (Mrs.) Olubukunola Atinuke Ejiwunmi, on Saturday delivered a powerful and inspiring keynote at the 6th NIA Distinguished Lecture, urging Nigerians to harness the nation’s diversity as a force for unity and national development.
The flagship annual event held in Lagos drew high-profile dignitaries, including the Oniru of Iruland, Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat (representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu), and the Managing Director of Ecobank Nigeria, Mr. Bolaji Lawal.
Welcoming guests to the gathering, NIA President Arc. Mobolaji Adeniyi, FNIA, praised Arc. Ejiwunmi’s exceptional legacy. “During her presidency from 2001 to 2003, Arc. Olubukunola Ejiwunmi demonstrated remarkable leadership, visiting architecture schools across the country, mentoring young professionals, and leaving a lasting mark on the Institute,” Adeniyi noted. “Her experience in public service, including as Permanent Secretary in Lagos under Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu, continues to guide the Institute’s progress.”
Oniru of Iruland Reflects on Diversity and Friendship
Delivering a heartfelt goodwill message, Oba Lawal shared personal anecdotes about cross-cultural friendships that shaped his worldview. “We tolerated one another,” he recalled of his university days in Port Harcourt. “My experience shows that harmony in diversity is not just a theme—it is a lived reality.”
The monarch, who also announced his forthcoming book From City to Mega-City: A Memoir of Lagos of Connection 1999–2023, said Nigeria’s diversity should be embraced to achieve inclusive national development.
He lauded the NIA’s lecture series as a platform for seasoned professionals to mentor younger ones. “This knowledge exchange accelerates growth in the architectural profession,” he said.
Ejiwunmi’s Vision: Architecture as a Tool for Unity
In her lecture titled “Harmony in Diversity,” Arc. Ejiwunmi defined harmony not as the absence of differences, but as the orchestration of them to build something greater. “Architects are like conductors of an orchestra,” she said. “We shape spaces that reflect cultural, functional, and societal complexity.”
She explored how diversity manifests in families, religion, politics, government, and the profession:
Family: Drawing from her polygamous upbringing, she stressed the role of parents in fostering mutual respect.
Religion: Highlighted peaceful co-existence in interfaith households, especially in Southwestern Nigeria.
Society: Cited festivals like Ojude Oba and Eyo as examples of Nigeria’s cultural harmony.
Politics: Urged civility and national interest in political discourse.
Government: Shared reflections on her roles as Permanent Secretary across various ministries.
Architecture: Emphasized the need for buildings to reflect Nigeria’s diversity, regional climate, and cultural identity.
Ejiwunmi also challenged the NIA to bridge gaps with regulatory bodies like ARCON, promote mentorship, and insist on local content in national projects.
“Unity doesn’t erase difference—it celebrates it,” she said. “Architecture must embody this principle to help shape a better Nigeria.”
Ecobank’s Commitment to Architectural Excellence
In a strong show of support, Ecobank Nigeria MD Bolaji Lawal announced a strategic partnership with the NIA to launch four national architecture competitions:
1. Undergraduate Team Design Challenge
2. Young Female Architects Eco-Resort Design Competition
3. Affordable Housing Using Local Materials
4. Comprehensive Healthcare Centre Design
“We want to contribute to a better built environment and a stronger Nigeria,” Lawal said. “Architecture has a unique role in national development, and we’re proud to support that.”
NIA President Responds to Ecobank Partnership
NIA President Arc. Mobolaji Adeniyi thanked Ecobank for the collaboration, noting that a formal Memorandum of Understanding had already been signed.
“Our competitions will nurture talent and showcase local innovation,” he stated. “This is a major win for students, young professionals, and the nation.”
He emphasized inclusiveness, announcing a curated Ecobank-NIA “Master Speak” lecture series to commence immediately.
The Way Forward: Unity Through Design
Arc. Ejiwunmi concluded by urging professionals to blend technology, sustainability, and collaboration in their practice. “Architecture must be a reflection of who we are,” she said. “Diverse, resilient, and united.”
With powerful voices from the royal court, public sector, and financial industry echoing a common vision, the 6th NIA Distinguished Lecture reinforced architecture’s unique capacity to shape not just skylines, but society itself.

Ogun Education Reforms in Focus as Aare Emmanuelking Celebrates Commissioner Abayomi Arigbabu
A birthday tribute by Adron Group Chairman and Chief Executive, Aare Adetola Emmanuelking, has drawn renewed attention to the performance of Ogun State’s education sector, with claims that the state’s Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Abayomi Arigbabu, has transformed learning and human capital development.
The congratulatory message describes Professor Arigbabu as “one of the foremost architects of educational transformation” in Ogun State. While such assessments reflect the opinion of the businessman, they also raise a broader question: how much progress has the state’s education sector recorded under the commissioner’s leadership?
Education remains one of the biggest policy priorities for state governments, particularly as concerns persist over learning outcomes, school infrastructure, teacher quality and access to education across Nigeria.
In his birthday message, Emmanuelking said Professor Arigbabu had combined scholarship, administrative competence and public service to improve education in the state.
“Professor Abayomi Arigbabu exemplifies the ideals of visionary leadership. His dedication to improving educational outcomes and empowering the next generation through quality learning continues to leave an indelible mark on Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole. His legacy is one of impact, excellence, and selfless service,” he stated.
He also credited the commissioner with introducing policies that have strengthened academic standards, promoted innovation and positioned education as a driver of sustainable development.
The Adron Group chairman further said the commissioner had remained committed to building an education system that equips young people with the knowledge, skills and values required to compete in a rapidly changing world.
As part of his goodwill message, Emmanuelking prayed for renewed strength, wisdom, good health and greater accomplishments for the commissioner, expressing confidence that his commitment to education would continue to benefit future generations.
The tribute, however, does not cite specific projects, performance indicators or independent assessments supporting the claims of educational transformation.
Available government records show that Ogun State has, in recent years, invested in school infrastructure, digital learning initiatives, teacher development programmes and reforms aimed at improving education management. Like many states, however, it continues to face challenges including funding constraints, overcrowded classrooms in some communities and the need to improve learning outcomes.
Education analysts say measuring the success of reforms requires more than policy announcements. Indicators such as examination performance, school enrolment and completion rates, teacher availability, learning assessments and budget implementation provide a clearer picture of whether reforms are achieving their objectives.
The birthday tribute comes at a time when governments across Nigeria are under increasing pressure to improve education quality as part of efforts to build a skilled workforce capable of supporting economic growth and reducing youth unemployment.

Frontier Calls for Better Housing Finance, Infrastructure to Reduce Nigeria’s Housing Deficit
Nigeria’s housing deficit cannot be addressed through private sector investment alone, according to Frontier Commercial Services Limited, which has called for stronger government support through affordable housing finance, improved infrastructure and simplified regulatory processes.
The call was made by the company’s Managing Director, Mr. Olalekan Oseni, during a media briefing ahead of the Mainland Housing Summit, where he responded to questions on mortgage accessibility, land administration, infrastructure and investor confidence in the real estate sector.
Oseni said access to finance remains one of the biggest barriers preventing many Nigerians from owning homes or investing in residential developments.
“We are bringing in financial institutions because the major issue that people are facing is the aspect of finance,” he said.
“If people have access to finance, I think there will be a lot of problems to be solved.”
He said banks and other financial institutions expected at the summit would engage prospective homeowners, developers and investors on available mortgage products and financing opportunities.
Affordable mortgages key to housing delivery
Responding to questions on mortgage financing, Oseni argued that affordable lending could help bridge Nigeria’s estimated housing deficit, but warned that lengthy approval processes could discourage borrowers.
“If it takes a long process and people don’t have free access to it, then it becomes difficult,” he said while discussing low-interest mortgage initiatives.
According to him, making mortgage facilities easier to access would encourage more people to build homes and enable developers to undertake larger housing projects.
He added that lower borrowing costs could also make it financially viable for developers to construct multi-unit residential buildings capable of accommodating more families.
“Instead of me building just an apartment for myself, why can’t I build something that can take 10 people?” he said.
Infrastructure seen as catalyst for growth
Oseni identified transport infrastructure as one of the most important factors shaping future housing development across Lagos and neighbouring Ogun State.
He said improved road networks and mass transit systems could unlock emerging communities by making them easier to access for residents and businesses.
“If people can access all these areas easily, let’s assume that we have a good metro system and within 20 or 30 minutes you’re already there, people will make use of that.”
He argued that Lagos still has significant land available for development but said poor accessibility has slowed growth in some corridors.
“The land cannot increase. But how can we manage the land space that we have? Number one, by having a good road network and accessibility.”
Urban planning experts have similarly argued that transport infrastructure often influences residential expansion by reducing travel times and encouraging commercial activity in developing communities.
Call for easier approvals
The Frontier Commercial Services chief also urged government agencies to simplify planning approvals and other regulatory procedures affecting housing development.
“The major role of government is to make things easy for people,” he said.
“If policies are not helping people, then something has to be checked.”
He suggested that reducing bureaucratic bottlenecks would encourage more private investment in residential construction while helping to increase housing supply.
Housing stakeholders have repeatedly identified regulatory delays, infrastructure gaps and financing constraints as major obstacles to delivering affordable housing across Nigeria.
Investor confidence depends on transparency
Questions from journalists also focused on public trust in the real estate sector, particularly concerns about land documentation and government acquisition.
Oseni said prospective buyers should conduct proper due diligence before purchasing property, noting that ownership documents alone do not always protect developments from demolition.
“Documents are not the only reason why government demolishes property,” he said.
He explained that planning violations, structural deficiencies and government acquisition could also affect developments, making independent verification essential.
According to him, Frontier Commercial Services provides clients with the documentation required to verify land ownership and regulatory approvals.
He also stressed the importance of maintaining construction standards.
“We don’t compromise on quality. It’s better you get it right and build something of quality.”
Population growth adds urgency
Oseni linked Nigeria’s housing challenge to rapid population growth, arguing that future urban expansion would require more efficient use of available land.
He noted that while Nigeria’s population is expected to continue rising over the coming decades, the country’s landmass will remain unchanged.
“The landmass can never increase,” he said.
He argued that expanding transport infrastructure and encouraging higher-density residential developments would become increasingly important as cities continue to grow.
Advice for first-time buyers
Asked what advice he would offer people entering the property market for the first time, Oseni encouraged gradual investment rather than waiting for ideal conditions.
“Your first property won’t even be your last one,” he said.
“Anything you can lay your hand on, go for it.”
He said many buyers stop investing after purchasing their first property instead of building a long-term property portfolio over time.
Why it matters
Nigeria continues to face a significant housing shortage amid rapid urbanisation, rising construction costs and limited access to affordable mortgage finance.
While private developers remain central to housing delivery, experts say achieving meaningful progress will require coordinated action involving government, financial institutions and the construction industry.
Improved infrastructure, transparent land administration, easier access to finance and consistent urban planning are widely regarded as essential to expanding affordable housing and strengthening investor confidence.
What’s next?
Frontier Commercial Services said the Mainland Housing Summit, scheduled for 25 July, will bring together developers, investors, banks, built environment professionals and other stakeholders to discuss housing finance, infrastructure, policy and emerging opportunities across the Lagos–Ogun corridor.
The company says the event aims to encourage informed investment decisions while promoting dialogue on practical solutions to Nigeria’s housing challenges.

Economic experts note that partnerships between governments and private companies can help accelerate housing, transportation, and industrial growth across the country.
