Three people, including the chairman of Emevor Community in Delta State, have been arraigned in court after a viral social media video allegedly showed the torture of a resident by a community leader and members of a local vigilante group.

The Delta State Police Command said the case followed a swift investigation ordered by the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, after the footage attracted widespread public attention and sparked concerns over alleged human rights abuses.

Police said investigators established that on 5 July 2026, at about 8:15 a.m., the victim was allegedly unlawfully arrested by the suspects and others who remain at large.

The victim was reportedly taken to a hotel in Emevor Community, where he was allegedly humiliated, assaulted, inflicted with bodily injuries and threatened with death.

Three suspects charged

Following the investigation, police arrested Lucky Okeremu (48), identified as the Chairman of Emevor Community, Okiemute Oyibo (46) and Karo Akamakusi (45).

The command said the three have been arraigned before a competent court on charges including conspiracy to commit felony, assault occasioning harm, conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace and threatening the life of the victim under the Criminal Code Law of Delta State.

Police added that efforts are continuing to arrest other suspects who are still at large.

Police warning to community leaders and vigilantes

The Commissioner of Police said community leaders and vigilante groups have an important role in supporting security but must operate within the law.

He said: “The command recognises the role of community leaders and vigilante groups in supporting security efforts, but no individual or group has the authority to assault, torture, intimidate, or subject any person to unlawful punishment.”

CP Oyeniyi added: “Anyone who takes the law into their own hands will be prosecuted.”

He also urged vigilante groups to always hand over suspects to the police for proper investigation and prosecution in accordance with the law.

He also assured residents that the Delta State Police Command would continue to perform its constitutional responsibilities “with professionalism, strict adherence to the rule of law, and respect for fundamental human rights.”

Monarch pledges support

The traditional ruler of Ughelli Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Dr Wilson Ojakovo, Oharisi III, pledged continued cooperation with the police.

He said the palace would not protect anyone involved in criminal activity because, according to him, “those protected today could become tomorrow’s threat to the community.”

The monarch added that the kingdom would continue supporting law enforcement through intelligence sharing and other collaborative security initiatives.

He also said the people of Ughelli believed in the police and would continue to work with security agencies.

Police officers reminded on professionalism

Mr Oyeniyi later met officers and personnel serving at the Ughelli Area Command, where he stressed discipline, professionalism and respectful conduct towards members of the public.

He reminded officers to comply with the Nigeria Police Force’s Standard Operating Procedures and warned against the unauthorised use of social media.

The commissioner said conduct capable of bringing the Force into disrepute would not be tolerated and urged personnel to embrace the Inspector General’s vision of intelligence-led and people-oriented policing.

Zone 13 rejects PCRC election claims

Meanwhile, Zone 13 Police Headquarters in Ukpo, Anambra State, has dismissed reports circulating on social media suggesting that the postponement of the Police Community Relations Committee elections resulted from alleged manipulation by the committee’s national leadership.

In a statement, the command described the reports as “entirely false, unfounded and misleading.”

Police said the election was postponed to allow other official zonal engagements to take place and to ensure wider participation by stakeholders.

The command urged the public, media organisations and stakeholders to rely only on information released by its Public Relations Office.

It also warned against sharing unverified reports capable of creating unnecessary panic and misinformation.

According to the statement, the command under Assistant Inspector General of Police Godwin Iguh Eze remains committed to transparency, professionalism and providing timely, accurate and credible information.

The Lagos State Police Command says it has arrested 135 suspected cultists and recovered 26 firearms during coordinated raids across several parts of the state to prevent violence linked to the annual July 7 (7/7) cult celebrations.

The operation was carried out by Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), Tactical Commanders and the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, following intelligence that rival cult groups were planning attacks.

Cult-related violence has remained a major security concern in Lagos, particularly around July 7, a date security agencies associate with initiation ceremonies and clashes between rival cult groups.

Police say acting before the planned attacks helped prevent possible loss of lives, injuries and destruction of property in affected communities.

According to the statement:

“Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command, comprising Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), Tactical Commanders, and the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), acting on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, PSC, MNIPS, and on credible intelligence, conducted simultaneous raids across identified criminal hideouts and black spots within the State to prevent cult-related violence associated with the 7/7 celebration/initiation.”

The statement added:

“The operation led to the arrest of one hundred and thirty-five (135) suspected cultists and the recovery of twenty-six (26) firearms, sixteen (16) other dangerous weapons such as cutlasses, battle axes, daggers and knives, cultist insignia, assorted charms, eleven (11) bottles of different alcoholic brands, substances suspected to be Indian hemp and other illicit drugs, as well as six (6) mobile phones.”

Police also said intelligence reports indicated that rival cult groups had planned coordinated attacks across parts of Lagos.
