A Nigerian woman is facing up to seven years in prison for writing a damning review of a can of tomato puree, after its maker accused her of damaging its business.

The woman identified as Chioma Okoli, 39, a businesswoman based in Lagos,  is being criminally prosecuted and sued in a civil court after she made negative comments about a product made by Nigerian foodmaker Erisco Foods.

She called on her 18,000 Facebook followers to share their thoughts about Ericso’s Nagiko Tomato Mix, after sharing a picture of an opened can of the product and saying it was too sweet.

One commenter said: ‘Stop spoiling my brother’s product. If [you] don’t like it, use another one than bring it to social media or call the customer service.’

Okoli responded: ‘Help me advise your brother to stop ki***ing people with his product, yesterday was my first time of using and it’s pure sugar.’

Chioma Okoli is being criminally prosecuted and sued in a civil court after she made negative comments about a product made by Nigerian foodmaker Erisco Foods

The businesswoman, who’s currently pregnant with her fourth child, was arrested by plainclothes officers from Nigeria’s national police in September while she was in church, and told CNN that she was made to stand around in a leaky cell for hours.

‘There were no seats, so I stood all through till the next day. My legs were inside the water [that came in from the leaking roof]’, she said.

‘Sometimes, I squatted to reduce the pressure on my legs. I was thinking about my children who were at home. I was talking to myself. I would think, I would pray, I was messed up,’ she added.

Okoli was criminally charged with two separate crimes, the most serious of which could land her behind bars for up to seven years.

She was charged with conspiring with two other individuals with ‘the intention of instigating people against Erisco Foods Limited’, and may have to go to prison for up to seven years.

Okoli was also charged with ‘instigating Erisco Foods Limited, knowing the said information to be false’, a crime that could end with her going to prison for three years, having to pay a fine of seven million naira (£3,950).

The company’s CEO Eric Umeofia has come under fire in Nigeria for his threatening behaviour against Okoli

Erisco itself is also bringing a civil lawsuit against her, after claiming earlier this year that ‘several suppliers’ cut ties with the company following her remarks, and is seeking 5 billion naira (£2.8 million) in damages.

She has launched two countersuits against the police and Erisco, which her legal team has described as a David vs. Goliath battle, for their treatment of the businesswoman.

He revealed her address to the nation during an interview about the ongoing legal battle, which her lawyer, Inhibehe Effiong, said was done ‘without regard for the security and safety of Chioma, her husband, and her entire family.’

He also told broadcasters that he would ‘rather die than allow someone to tarnish my image I worked 40 years to grow.’

The behaviour of the police and Erisco have come under fire from groups across the world.

Amnesty International said: ‘Harassment and intimidation of Chioma Okoli must end now.’

The NIDCOM Chairman stated this in Abuja at the business conference for investors.

Her words: “Well done Mr Adeyemo, this is Pelican Valley in Ogun State. I’m sure Nigerians in the diasporas will be interested in the projects. So, you will give us further details about it. We wish you great success.

“It is nice to see young Nigerian entrepreneurs doing great things, doing businesses and working very hard. We are supposed to be good with our brothers and sisters in diasporas and everywhere around the world. Hopefully, I should be able to buy one.

“I have watched him for a long time now and I think I’m particularly interested in what he’s doing. He’s not the type of developer who will collect people’s money and run away,” she said.

Abike Dabiri – Erewa had in December 2023 while addressing the Nigerians in the UK during the Avenue Impact Business Networking and Winter Ball at the Crown Plaza Hotel, London, called on Nigerians in the UK, United States and other parts of Europe to join hands with their fellow compatriots at home to build Nigeria to greater heights.

At that occasion which had Adeyemo in attendance as a keynote speaker, Dabiri – Erewa also solicited Nigerians’ support for one another to keep Nigeria aloft for honours, while Adeyemo harped on the need for the diasporas not to wait until they’ve attained the retirement age before making plans to japada, or establish investment ties back home with their fatherland.

Meanwhile, the Pelican Valley CEO has said the first batch of houses within the Pelican Ecostay Apartments will be launched on September 11, 2024.

Also, over 10 neighbouring communities which include Kobape, Egbeda, Galatia, Masha, Mosunmore, Ijo-Alafia among others are beneficiaries of the installed industrial Solar lights

The real estate practitioner had told Abike Dabiri that the first set of houses in the Ecostay Apartments would be commissioned on September 11, 2024 and humbly solicited her presence at the auspicious occasion where the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, will be a special guest of honour while former governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba is expected as the Father of the Day.

He also told the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NIDCOM that while most of the subscribers to the houses have up to September 2025 to complete the instalments payment plan for the properties, the projects will be completed for commissioning and ready for possession September, 2023.
