Lagos Police, Federal Character Commission Pledge Merit-Based Recruitment in Screening Exercise
The Lagos State Police Command has pledged a merit-driven recruitment process following a meeting with officials from the Federal Character Commission in Ikeja.
The Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, received Abdulwasiu Kayode Bawa-Allah, who represents Lagos at the commission, during a courtesy visit to the command headquar
The delegation included Oluwakemi Islamiat Opakunle and other senior officials, alongside members of the police management team.
What was discussed
During the visit, Mr Bawa-Allah assured the police command of the commission’s backing throughout the screening process.
“The Commission will support the Command throughout the screening process and ensure fairness,” he said.
The meeting also had in attendance the Team Lead of the Screening Committee, Lawal Balogun, and other senior officers.
Commitment to merit and fairness
Responding, CP Jimoh said the command would uphold professionalism in its recruitment process.
“The Command will ensure that all recommendations are strictly based on merit and without bias,” he said.
Why it matters
Recruitment into Nigeria’s security agencies has often drawn scrutiny over allegations of bias and lack of transparency.
The involvement of the Federal Character Commission—mandated to ensure equitable representation across states—signals an attempt to build public trust and improve accountability in the process.
For applicants and the wider public, the pledge could mean a more transparent system, where performance and qualifications carry greater weight.
Industry and public perspective
Security analysts say collaboration between oversight bodies and law enforcement agencies is key to restoring confidence in public institutions.
They note that fair recruitment processes can strengthen operational efficiency, reduce internal grievances, and improve community relations.
What’s next
The screening exercise is expected to continue under the supervision of both the police command and the Federal Character Commission.
Observers will be watching closely to see whether the commitments made translate into a transparent and credible outcome.

Customs Launch Investigation After Fatal Incident During Anti-Smuggling Operation in Osogbo
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has begun an investigation into a fatal incident that occurred during an anti-smuggling patrol along the **Osogbo axis in **Osun State on 15 March 2026.
In a statement issued by the Nigeria Customs Service Oyo/Osun Area Command, officials said the operation involved officers attempting to intercept suspected smuggled foreign-used vehicles, commonly referred to in Nigeria as Tokunbo vehicles.
The command said it was “saddened” by the incident and acknowledged the public concern generated by a video circulating online and a separate statement by the Osun State Police Command.
Investigation underway
Customs officials said the patrol team involved in the operation was conducting routine enforcement duties when the incident occurred.
The command confirmed that a review of the operation has already begun.
“The Command recognises the public concern generated by these reports and considers it essential to provide a professional perspective while efforts are underway to establish the full facts,” the statement said.
The investigation will examine the actions of two officers identified as Kolawole Suuti and Danjuma Samuel, including whether their conduct complied with the service’s Rules of Engagement (ROE).
Customs expresses condolences
The customs authority also confirmed that a life was lost in the incident and expressed sympathy to the victim’s family.
“It is pertinent to note that the Command deeply regrets the loss of life recorded in the incident and extends its sincere condolences to the family of the deceased,” the statement added.
“The Service recognises the sanctity of human life and remains committed to ensuring that its enforcement operations are conducted with the utmost sense of responsibility and professionalism.”
Why the operation took place
According to the statement, the patrol was part of the agency’s mandate to curb smuggling and enforce trade regulations across Nigeria’s borders and highways.
The customs service said the officers were attempting to intercept vehicles suspected of being illegally imported into the country.
Smuggling of foreign-used vehicles remains a major concern for authorities, particularly in southwestern Nigeria, where enforcement teams frequently conduct highway patrols.
Call for coordinated investigation
Customs officials said they were working closely with other security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, to determine what happened.
“The Nigeria Customs Service remains a disciplined and professional organization committed to upholding the rule of law and protecting lives,” the command said.
“While we maintain a strong working relationship with the Nigeria Police Force, we urge for a harmonized and objective investigation that accounts for all forensic variables, including the origin of the discharged ammunition.”
Appeal to the public
Authorities also urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information while investigations continue.
“The Oyo/Osun Area Command urges members of the public to remain calm and allow due process to take its course,” the statement said.
“We advise against the spread of unverified information that could incite unnecessary tension between sister security agencies or within the community.”
Officials added that the outcome of the investigation would determine any further action in line with Nigerian law.

NSCDC Tightens Security Around Critical Assets Ahead of Soludo’s Second-Term Inauguration
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Anambra State says it has intensified security around key government installations and public spaces ahead of the inauguration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo for a second term.
The state commandant, Maku Olatunde, said officers had been deployed to event venues and other critical national assets and infrastructure to ensure the ceremony scheduled for Tuesday, 17 March 2026 proceeds without disruption.
He made the remarks on Sunday while addressing officers and personnel assigned to security duties across the state.
Security agencies step up surveillance
Mr Olatunde praised the resilience of the corps’ personnel, saying their presence across strategic locations demonstrates the agency’s commitment to maintaining peace during the event.
“The protection of Anambra residents and the critical national assets and infrastructure is paramount to us, and my operatives — both armed and those on covert operations — are ready to give this national assignment their best,” he said.
He added that the command was working closely with other security agencies to guarantee public safety before, during and after the inauguration.
According to him, security personnel will maintain 24-hour surveillance, particularly in areas identified as security flashpoints.
“At this point we cannot allow miscreants and vandals to take advantage of the celebratory mood to perpetrate evil against the state and its inhabitants,” Mr Olatunde said.
Why it matters
The inauguration marks the beginning of a new term for Governor Soludo after his administration’s first tenure focused on infrastructure development, urban renewal and economic reforms.
Major political ceremonies often attract large crowds, visiting dignitaries and increased public activity — factors that typically require stronger security coordination.
Security experts say proactive deployments can help prevent vandalism, protect public facilities and ensure the safety of residents and visitors.
Call for public cooperation
During a security tour of the state capital and surrounding areas, Mr Olatunde urged residents to support the government and security agencies by protecting public infrastructure in their communities.
“Residents should report any act of vandalism promptly to the nearest NSCDC formation,” he said.
He also encouraged citizens to turn out in large numbers to witness the swearing-in ceremony.
Mr Olatunde further commended the development projects undertaken by Governor Soludo and wished him a successful second term in office.
What’s next
Security deployments are expected to remain active across key locations in the state until the inauguration ceremony concludes.
Authorities say monitoring teams will continue to assess the situation and respond to any emerging threats.

Transformative Leadership: CSP Tayo Akerele Reshapes Lagos State Taskforce
Since assuming office as Chairman of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offenses Unit, widely known as the Lagos State Taskforce, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Tayo Akerele has led a transformative period marked by innovation, discipline, and public accountability.
A New Chapter for the Lagos State Taskforce
On 26 June 2024, CSP Akerele formally took the helm of the Lagos State Taskforce, an agency responsible for enforcing environmental and public safety regulations across Nigeria’s commercial hub. From the outset, his leadership style combined strategic thinking, collaborative partnerships, and technological advancement—ensuring operations align with existing laws and best practices.
“Under my watch, enforcement will always respect the rule of law while ensuring public safety,” CSP Akerele said during a recent press briefing. “We prioritize discipline, integrity, and professionalism in every patrol.”
Modern Policing and Public Engagement
Before his appointment, CSP Akerele was already known for championing modern policing methods. Through seminars and international conferences, he gained exposure to global best practices in law enforcement, which he now applies to the Taskforce’s daily operations. Officers are routinely reminded to avoid excessive force, ensuring a balance between law enforcement and citizens’ rights.
To strengthen accountability, Akerele established dedicated emergency feedback lines—09137555111 and 09138555111—allowing the public to report complaints, commendations, or observations about Taskforce officers on patrol.
“These reforms enhance transparency and trust between the public and law enforcement,” Akerele noted.
Operational Challenges and Strategic Reforms
Taskforce officers often operate under complex conditions, where offenders leverage nepotism and power to evade justice. CSP Akerele addressed these challenges by redesigning the agency’s operational structure, increasing efficiency, and ensuring that offenders are brought to justice in line with legal protocols.
Experts say that such strategic reforms are critical for improving law enforcement outcomes in densely populated urban centers like Lagos.
“Effective leadership in law enforcement is not just about enforcing the law—it’s about building systems that ensure fairness, transparency, and accountability,” said Dr. Omowumi Ogunrotimi, security and governance expert.
Impact and Legacy
Since his appointment, CSP Akerele’s leadership has resulted in measurable improvements. Operational strategies under his direction have streamlined processes, eliminated criminal elements, and strengthened public confidence in the Taskforce. Analysts note that these successes underscore the importance of competent leadership in high-pressure policing environments.
“The Taskforce’s rising profile and effectiveness reflect CSP Akerele’s commitment to reform and modern law enforcement,” said Lagos State governance observers.
What’s Next
CSP Akerele plans to continue expanding public engagement, refining operational strategies, and integrating technology to further improve service delivery. The Taskforce’s continued evolution signals a model for policing reform in other Nigerian states.
