LP Rejects Enugu Governorship Tribunal Ruling

The Enugu Governorship Tribunal, which affirmed the election of Governor Peter Mbah of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has been rejected by the Labour Party.
Nigeria Updates reported that the tribunal had on Thursday dismissed all grounds of the petition filed by the Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate, Chijioke Edeoga, challenging Mbah’s victory at the polls.
Delivering the judgement on Thursday, the Chairman of the three-judge panel, Justice Kudirat Akano, said the petition filed by Edeoga that Mbah’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate was forged lacked merit.
Reacting in a statement on Thursday, the LP National Chairman, Julius Abure, described the tribunal’s ruling as an absurd, stark reality of the future of the judiciary in Nigeria.
He stated that the party is worried about the level of degeneration in the nation’s judiciary, where ridiculous rulings are frequently churned out from the hallowed temple of justice.
Abure, therefore, announced its intention of the party to appeal the tribunal judgement, which ruled against its candidate.
The statement reads: “Labour Party today watched in horror as another absurdity played out in Enugu where the Governorship and House of Assembly Tribunal dismissed allegations of NYSC certificate forgery against the PDP candidate, Peter Mbah.
“The tribunal also struck out our party’s allegation of over-voting, and bypass of BVAS while insisting that Peter Mbah was duly elected as governor by the majority of lawful and valid votes cast at the election.
“Though we will seek redress at the Supreme Court immediately, knowing that justice was miscarried in this particular case and that the tribunal judgement cannot stand, we are worried about the level of degeneration in our judiciary where ridiculous rulings are frequently churned out from the hallowed temple of justice.
“Our case before the tribunal was a clear case of electoral robbery where we pointed out that in Enugu, after the collation of 16 LGAs out of the 17 LGAs of the state, our candidate, Chijioke Edeoga, was leading with over 11,000 votes, surprisingly, the PDP in Enugu, working in cahoots with the INEC, shockingly and provocatively wrote and awarded to the PDP a whopping 30,000 votes at Nkanu East LGA, the LGA of the PDP candidate.
“We pointed out that the figures from the INEC BVAS, Nkanu East LGA, recorded a total number of 15,000 accredited voters on Election Day. However, when votes were declared, the PDP was allocated a total number of 30,350 votes, while a total number of 1,855 was credited to the Labour Party. So, we asked how INEC could have turned out over 33,000 votes in a place where only about 15,000 voters were accredited.”
The party called for a concerted effort by all well-meaning Nigerians to guide the judiciary and ensure that the state does not capture it.
It further stated: “We had also asked the tribunal to disqualify the PDP candidate for presenting a fake NYSC certificate. The authority of NYSC confirmed that the PDP candidate absconded from service and that the certificate he paraded was not issued by them. Doesn’t that seem like an open and closed case, yet the tribunal saw nothing in a clear case of electoral forgery and perjury?
“In the wake of this judgement, we were aware of a series of visits made by Mba to Aso Rock, and we also took note of his level of confidence lately. However, we had ignored these ominous signs while hoping that the blind Lady of Justice would act impartially, but we are shocked by this judicial endorsement.
“Labour Party may be weeping today for this travesty of justice meted at us, but we do not know whose turn it would be tomorrow. Evil, they say, triumphs when the righteous keep silent and when they refuse to condemn it. We also think that the judiciary has a key role to play in keeping our democracy alive and safe.
“We, therefore, call for a concerted effort by all well-meaning Nigerians to guide this all-important arm of government and ensure that the state does not capture it. We must all rise to save our democracy.”

‘What Ganduje Will Do In APC To Retain Power In 2027’ – Jimeta

Hadiza Sabo Jimeta, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa State, has expressed optimism that the party would retain power in the 2027 election.
Nigeria Updates reports that Jemita made this known while addressing newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja, in preparations to launch ‘Iconic Legacy Megazine’ capturing the political life of the APC deputy national chairman (North), Ali Bukar Dalori.
She noted that the party’s national chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Dalori, and other members of the National Working Committee (NWC), would heal the wounds in the party, irrespective of the political crisis and reposition it to retain power in 2027.
Jimeta added the present NWC has what it takes to unite the party and make it more viable in the nation’s political landscape.
She said, “There is no political party that has no issues, especially the big parties, but I believe APC under Ganduje and Dalori will be one; they will heal the wounds and prepare the party to win the 2027 elections.”
Ganduje’s Administration Employed JSS Students Into Civil Service
Meanwhile, Governor Abba Yusuf-led Kano State government has revealed how the past administration of Abdullahi Ganduje allegedly employed unqualified persons, including Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) Students, into the Civil Service.
Nigeria Updates understands that the current administration directed the suspension of the salaries of some civil servants.
Subsequently, a committee was set up to screen and verify employment conducted by the immediate past administration.
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Abudullahi Baffa Bichi, while addressing newsmen on Friday, said the committee found out that the last administration undertook mass employment without recourse to necessary guidelines and service regulation.
He noted that the committee recommended the dismissal of unqualified persons, who were over 3,000.

Despite Tinubu’s Directive Some Ondo Lawmakers Bent On Shoving Akeredolu

The last has not been heard of the crisis rocking the Ondo State Government despite the peace deal brokered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Nigeria Updates gathered that despite Tinubu directing warring parties to maintain the status quo, moves are still on the way to allegedly install the Ondo State Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, as Governor.
Recall that there was tension in the state chapter of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Ondo State Executive Council over a plot to unseat Governor Rotimi Akeredolu by some lawmakers who insisted that the Deputy Governor should be pronounced as Acting Governor, contrary to the terms of the agreement.
President Tinubu, during a meeting with the Akeredolu and Ayedatiwa camps at the weekend, urged them to sheathe their swords and allow peace to reign.
At the weekend’s meeting were Ayedatiwa, party chairman Ade Adetimehin, Secretary to Government Oladunni Odu, Oladiji, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, and others.
Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Tinubu, Ajuri Ngelale, in a statement after the meeting, said the President advised that the status quo be maintained.
He added: “This means that Governor Akeredolu remains Chief Executive of the State, Aiyedatiwa remains Deputy Governor, and members of the State Executive Council continue their respective duties, even as the leadership of the House of Assembly and the APC Chapter in Ondo State is preserved.“
Despite the intervention of the President, reports have emerged that eleven lawmakers are still pushing to make Aiyedatiwa Acting Governor.
The 11 lawmakers loyal to Aiyedatiwa have allegedly started to woo Akeredolu’s loyalists to their side to get majority support to pronounce the deputy governor as acting governor.
Speaking to The Nation, one of the lawmakers, who spoke anonymously, said: “On Sunday, a number of us received a call from the deputy governor. He informed us that he must be declared acting governor on Tuesday.
“When we reminded him that it wasn’t part of the resolutions reached at the meeting with the President, he said the President can’t tell us how to run Ondo State.
“All efforts to make the deputy governor understand that the resolutions would only engender peace and allow the state to move forward failed as he yelled and said over his dead body would Akeredolu remain as governor.
“The deputy governor has failed to understand that the President has given the best political solution to the issue at hand. I wonder what Mr. Deputy Governor wants again. The agreement is that you should go and do your job. Represent your boss and get the people together. Is that too hard?
“Why is he hell-bent on becoming acting governor? Is he doing it in the interest of the people of the state? The answer is definitely no.
“Aiyedatiwa believes that the only way for him to become governor is if he forcefully takes power from Akeredolu now.
“The painful part is the unbridled affront to the President’s directive that the status quo should remain. President Tinubu is a man who should be respected in Ondo State.
“Especially if you are a loyal member of the APC, you must understand that Tinubu has invested so much in the party over the years.”
The party chairman, Adetimehin, said party leaders who met with the president were committed to the peace plan, adding that no politician in the state can move against the resolution reached with the President.
He said: “There’s nothing of such. No one dared go against the resolution reached with the President. Can anyone go against what President Tinubu has pronounced? That agreement stands and nothing more.”

Jandor Heads To Supreme Court To Challenge Sanwo-Olu’s Election As Lagos Governor

Olajide Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have vowed to challenge the Court of Appeal ruling affirming Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s victory.
The Lagos PDP Publicity Secretary, Hakeem Amode, made this known in an interview with reporters in Lagos on Monday.
Amode stated that the party was heading to the Supreme Court to challenge the affirmation of Sanwo-Olu’s election as Lagos governor.
The publicity secretary said that justice has not been properly served in the party’s governorship candidate’s petitions against Governor Sanwo-Olu’s re-election.
He said, “We are challenging the ruling of the Appeal Court, affirming Sanwo-Olu as winner at the Supreme Court. In a couple of days, our petitions will get to the Supreme Court.”
Recall that the Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos on November 15 dismissed issues raised by Adediran against the ruling of the election petition tribunal in the state.
The appellate court followed the ruling of the tribunal and dismissed Adediran’s 34 grounds of appeal against Sanwo-Olu’s victory in the March 18 governorship election.
The court ruled that on the alleged non-qualification of Sanwo-Olu and his running mate, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, it could not litigate on the issue because it was a pre-election matter.
The court further held that the appellants failed to prove the allegation that Sanwo-Olu forged his West African Examination Council (WAEC) certificate.
