Messi Speaks Ahead Of Inter Miami’s Clash With Ronaldo’s Club

Former Barcelona star player, Lionel Messi, has expressed his anticipation for the upcoming Riyadh Cup, where he will face his arch-rival, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi’s club, Inter Miami and Ronaldo’s Saudi Arabia club, Al Nassr, will both participate in the highly-anticipated tournament, known as ‘The Last Dance’, which will be held at the state-of-the-art Kingdom Arena from Monday, January 29 to Friday, February 8.

This event could potentially mark the final encounter between Messi and Ronaldo, who have faced each other 35 times throughout their professional careers.

Out of these matches, Messi has emerged victorious 16 times, while Ronaldo has secured 10 wins, with nine draws in their encounters primarily in Spain and the Champions League.

Interestingly, both players found the back of the net in a friendly match last October when PSG, Messi’s former club, played against the Saudi All-Stars, resulting in a thrilling 5-4 victory for Messi’s team.

It is worth noting that this match took place shortly before Messi’s transfer to the United States.

However, taking to his social media page earlier, the Argentine forward, Messi wrote: “I can’t wait to be part of #RiyadhSeasonCup with my team Inter Miami CF, as we face top Saudi clubs in a historic championship.”

The game will serve as a preseason tournament for Inter Miami, with the new regular MLS season holding between February 21 and October 19, while the playoffs, October and December.

Chelsea Are Highest Spenders On Football Agents In Premier League

Chelsea have reportedly spent the highest amount of money on football agents in the last 12 months (between February 2023 to February 2024) in the Premier League.

Chelsea have always been known to be heavy spenders in the transfer market but since American businessman, Todd Boehly and his consortium became the owners of the club two years ago, their expenditures on new players have increased dramatically.

In the last two years, Todd Boehly and his consortium have spent over £1 billion just in recruiting new players who have not been able to give the team the expected success.

Within 12 months, the Stamford Bridge-based club have spent a whooping £75.1 million just to pay agency fees in the process of buying new players.

Chelsea accounts for over 18 percent of the total amount of agency fees (£409.5 million) Premier League clubs paid to agents in the last 12 months.

They paid about £15 million more than Manchester City who spent £60.6 million on agency fees in the same period.

Manchester United (£34 million), Liverpool (£31.5m), Arsenal (£24.7m), Aston Villa (£21.1m), Tottenham (£19.7m), and Newcastle United (£18.8m), complete the top 8 of Premier League clubs who have spent the most on agents in the last 12 months.

Luton Town (£2m) spent the least money on agents in the Premier League in the last 12 months, way less than relegated Leeds United (£13.2m), Leicester City (£8.1m) and Southampton (£7.5m).

It’s Half Time, South Africa Coach Tells Super Falcons After Defeat In Abuja

As South Africa defeats the Nigeria Super Falcons team, the Banyana Banyana of South Africa head coach, Desiree Ellis, has warned the Super Falcons of Nigeria that the 2024 Summer Olympics qualification tie is not over.

On Friday, April 5, the Banyana Banyana of South Africa were at the MKO Abiola stadium in Abuja to take on the Super Falcons of Nigeria in the first leg of the 2024 Olympics qualifiers third round.

A first-half goal from the penalty spot via the boots of Rasheedat Ajibade earned the Super Falcons a slim 1-0 win over the reigning African champions.

The tie will be decided in the second leg which will take place in Pretoria on Tuesday, April 9. All the Super Falcons need in the game is either a draw or a win, while the South African team must record a win to qualify for the 2024 Olympics.

After the 1-0 defeat to the Super Falcons, Desiree Ellis who led Banyana Banyana to the 2022 African women’s championship victory stressed that her team will bounce back in the return leg.

“Look, I said before the game, it was going to be a tight game. We said that the result over two legs will be what matters”, Ellis told reporters in Abuja.

“We feel we’re still in the game, we created a couple of chances. A penalty decided the match but the tie is not over. I thought in the second half we raised our game a lot, and created a few chances.

“We could have equalized and maybe won a penalty at the end. But I’m proud of the team. And we’ll take it back. To Pretoria.”

She added, “Obviously, going to have a look at the footage and see where we can exploit the Falcons in the second leg. Because I thought defensively, we were really sound. And up until that moment from the penalty, we created a couple of chances. We also had a lot of players coming back from injury.

“Not having played 90 minutes. And I thought we got a lot out of them. So they are better in their legs now and be better in the second leg. But as Tembi Kagtlana said, for us, it’s half-time. We still have another half to go.”
