Nigeria Football Supporters Club Calls for Unity at 65th Independence Day
The Nigeria Football Supporters Club (NFSC), founded in 1955, is the oldest of its kind in Africa and has long promoted national unity through sport. Ahead of Independence Day on 1 October, the club says collective effort is vital to overcome Nigeria’s challenges.
Call for unity
Speaking in Lagos, NFSC National Chairman Reverend Samuel Ikpea urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and rally behind the country despite economic and social difficulties.
“As a group known for uniting Nigerians through our unwavering football support, the NFSC is calling on all Nigerians to rally round the nation,” Ikpea said. “Though the nation grapples with challenges, the best we can do is to get involved mentally and practically by projecting Nigeria positively and making meaningful contributions in our little corners.”
He added that while constructive criticism was healthy, “mere condemnation and lamentations will not help.”
Tying into the national theme
Ikpea welcomed the Federal Government’s theme for this year’s independence anniversary, “Nigeria @65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation.”
“This theme is a reminder that we must all put aside differences and work together—government, private sector, civil society, sports stakeholders, and citizens—to forge a Nigeria of peace, prosperity and progress,” he said.
Independence celebrations in Lagos
The NFSC announced that it will hold an Independence Day Walk through Surulere, the National Stadium, and Ojuelegba areas of Lagos.
The celebrations will end with a party at the club’s Funsho Williams Avenue headquarters, where around 60 new members will be inducted. The event is expected to feature sports icons and former footballers who have contributed to national unity.
Industry reactions
Sports analysts say the NFSC has consistently used football to promote national cohesion, particularly during international tournaments where its presence is most visible.
Local residents in Lagos told the BBC the Independence Day Walk would not only foster unity but also highlight the role of sports in nation-building.
What’s next
The NFSC said it hopes this year’s activities will inspire more young Nigerians to join its ranks and use sports as a platform to strengthen patriotism.
“The anniversary should serve as a reflection point for all Nigerians to recommit to the collective project of building a greater nation,” Ikpea said.

Portable, Charles Okocha Renew Rivalry Ahead of ‘Chaos in the Ring’ Celebrity Fight
Portable and actor Charles Okocha exchanged verbal jabs and faced off during a tense pre-fight press conference ahead of Friday’s “Chaos in the Ring” celebrity boxing event in Lagos, rekindling a rivalry that began nearly three years ago.
The face-off, held on Wednesday at the Balmoral Convention Centre in Ikeja, comes ahead of the celebrity bout scheduled for Friday, July 31, at the Balmoral Convention Centre inside the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island.
The confrontation attracted entertainment enthusiasts and boxing fans eager to see whether singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, can repeat his earlier victory over actor and comedian Charles Okocha, popularly called “Mr Algorithm.”
During the heated exchange, Portable reminded his opponent of their previous contest.
“You don chop am before… you go chop am again.”
Okocha responded calmly but confidently, dismissing the taunt.
“This chicken leg… let’s see how it goes on Friday.”
The rivalry dates back to December 2023 when both entertainers first met in a celebrity boxing contest at Landmark Beach, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Why the fight matters
Celebrity boxing has increasingly become part of Nigeria’s entertainment landscape, combining music, comedy, social media influence and combat sports to attract younger audiences and commercial sponsors.
While such events are primarily entertainment, promoters say they also create opportunities for athletes, event organisers, broadcasters and businesses connected to the sports industry.
Friday’s programme will feature several additional fights, including Idowest against Mr Real, Britain’s Shiloh Defreitas (“Sugar Shy”) against Ghana’s Eric “Kojo” Quarm, Nigeria’s Rilwan Lawal against Yusuf Adeniji, and Basit Adebayo of Nigeria against Said Chino of Tanzania.
Sponsor sees platform for brand engagement
Headline sponsor Fearless Energy Drink, produced by Rite Foods Limited, said its involvement reflects its strategy of connecting with consumers through entertainment and lifestyle events.
The Brand Manager for Fearless Energy Drink, Olaniyi Aderuku, said the sponsorship aligns with the company’s emphasis on courage and determination.
“Chaos In the Ring is another platform where the brand will showcase its revitalising flavour, instigating the action it represents in the contestants, who are determined to come up with their best.”
His comments reflect a growing trend of consumer brands investing in sports entertainment to reach younger audiences beyond traditional advertising.
Organisers expect wider economic benefits
The organisers believe the event could also contribute to Nigeria’s sports economy by attracting international attention.
Group Chief Executive Officer of Balmoral Group, Ezekiel Adamu, described the competition as more than entertainment.
“The competition is an opportunity to showcase African talent among young Nigerians in entertainment, attract international partnerships, and create new opportunities in the sports ecosystem.”
Industry analysts have noted that celebrity sporting events can generate income for venues, hospitality businesses, security providers, media organisations and digital content creators, although their long-term economic impact depends on sustained audience interest and investment.
Expert perspective
Sports business analysts say celebrity boxing has become a global commercial model, drawing viewers who may not ordinarily follow professional boxing.
If properly regulated, marketed and supported with athlete development, such events can broaden interest in combat sports while creating new revenue streams for promoters and broadcasters. However, experts also stress that adequate medical supervision, safety standards and transparent officiating remain essential to protect participants and preserve public confidence.
What fans can expect
Friday’s event is expected to combine boxing with live entertainment, reflecting the growing convergence of sports and popular culture in Nigeria.
Whether Portable extends his winning record against Okocha or the actor secures revenge, organisers are banking on the rivalry to draw significant attention both inside the venue and across social media.
Industry Reaction
Entertainment promoters say celebrity boxing has become an effective way of engaging younger audiences who consume sports through social media and digital platforms.
Fans have also welcomed the return of the Portable-Okocha rivalry, with many viewing it as one of Nigeria’s most recognisable celebrity sporting contests in recent years.
What’s Next?
The “Chaos in the Ring” event takes place on Friday, July 31, 2026, at the Balmoral Convention Centre, Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The headline bout between Portable and Charles Okocha is expected to headline a card featuring Nigerian and international fighters.

Afeni Cup 2026: Nigeria Customs Launches Football Tournament to Fight Smuggling Among Ogun Border Youths
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun I Command, has launched the Afeni Cup 2026, an inter-secondary school football tournament aimed at discouraging young people from engaging in smuggling in the border town of Idiroko, Ogun State.
Officials say the competition is designed to provide students with positive opportunities through sports while addressing the long-standing challenge of youth involvement in illicit cross-border trade.
The tournament is being organised in partnership with Jonnyyeko College of Health Science and Technology as part of the Command’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.
According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Customs Chado Zakari, the initiative seeks to engage young people constructively, strengthen community ties and introduce students to career opportunities beyond smuggling.
Why it matters
Idiroko is one of Nigeria’s major border communities and has for years faced challenges linked to smuggling because of its location along international trade routes.
Security experts have often argued that tackling smuggling requires more than enforcement alone, saying education, youth engagement and economic opportunities are also essential in reducing recruitment into illegal activities.
By targeting secondary school students, Customs hopes to intervene before vulnerable youths become involved in cross-border crime.
Customs: ‘Smuggling robs our youth of their future’
Declaring the tournament open, the Acting Customs Area Controller of Ogun I Command, Deputy Comptroller Oladapo Afeni, said the competition is intended to inspire young people while promoting responsible choices.
“Smuggling robs our youth of their future. By sponsoring this competition, we aren’t just playing football; we are providing a platform for advocacy, teaching life skills, and showing these students that their potential extends far beyond the border tracks.”
Afeni added that the tournament would also identify promising football talents and encourage participants to consider sports as a legitimate career path instead of illegal border activities.
Community backs initiative
The competition features 12 secondary school teams from across the local government area and is expected to involve hundreds of students, teachers and supporters.
Educational authorities, youth associations and community leaders have welcomed the programme, describing it as a timely effort to keep young people in school and away from smuggling routes.
Education stakeholders say initiatives combining sports and learning can improve school participation while promoting discipline, teamwork and leadership among students.
Expert perspective
Youth development specialists say organised sports have repeatedly been used worldwide to reduce youth crime and social exclusion by creating mentorship opportunities and building life skills.
They note, however, that long-term success will depend on sustained investment in education, employment opportunities and community development alongside security operations.
What’s next?
The tournament began on 13 July 2026 at Iko Gate Grammar School, Idiroko, and will conclude with a grand finale on 24 July 2026.
Organisers say winning schools and outstanding players will receive cash prizes and educational materials at the end of the competition.

2026 World Cup: Haaland Sends Norway Past Brazil as England Beat Mexico
Norway reached the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in their history after Erling Haaland scored twice late on to secure a stunning 2-1 victory over five-time champions Brazil.
The historic win ended Brazil’s campaign in the last 16—their earliest World Cup exit since 1990—and underlined Norway’s emergence as one of the tournament’s surprise contenders.
Brazil were left to rue Bruno Guimarães’ missed first-half penalty before Haaland took control of the contest.
The Manchester City striker, who had been largely contained throughout the match, broke the deadlock in the 79th minute by meeting Andreas Schjelderup’s cross with a composed finish.
He added a spectacular second goal in the 90th minute, firing a powerful low strike beyond Alisson from outside the penalty area to seal one of the greatest victories in Norwegian football history.
Brazil pulled one goal back deep into stoppage time after referee Ismail Elfath awarded a second penalty following Leo Østigård’s challenge on Casemiro.
Neymar converted from the spot, but the goal arrived too late to prevent Brazil’s elimination.
The brace also moved Haaland onto seven goals in the race for the tournament’s Golden Boot, drawing level with Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi.
Why it matters
Norway’s victory represents one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and signals a changing balance in international football.
For Brazil, the defeat raises fresh questions about the team’s rebuilding process under Carlo Ancelotti after another disappointing World Cup campaign.
For Norway, the achievement marks a historic milestone and gives the Scandinavian nation its best-ever opportunity to compete for football’s biggest prize.
England Survive Mexico Fightback
England booked their place in the quarter-finals after defeating co-hosts Mexico 3-2 in an eventful last-16 encounter at the Azteca Stadium.
Kick-off was delayed for an hour because of severe storms, but Thomas Tuchel’s side quickly settled and dominated the opening stages.
Jude Bellingham stunned the home supporters by scoring twice within 98 seconds before Julián Quiñones reduced the deficit shortly before half-time.
England’s task became significantly harder early in the second half when Jarell Quansah was sent off for a high challenge on Jesús Gallardo.
Harry Kane restored England’s two-goal advantage from the penalty spot after Anthony Gordon was fouled by goalkeeper Raúl Rangel.
Mexico refused to give up, however.
Kane later conceded a penalty after catching Brian Gutiérrez, allowing Raúl Jiménez to score and set up a tense finale.
Tuchel responded by introducing Dan Burn and Djed Spence before switching to a five-man defence.
England withstood sustained pressure during 11 minutes of added time to secure victory and set up a quarter-final meeting with Norway.
Neymar Hints at International Retirement

Brazil’s painful exit may also have marked the end of Neymar’s international career.
The 34-year-old forward appeared to announce his retirement from international football moments after the defeat.
Speaking to Brazil’s Globo Esporte, Neymar said:
“I tried, and I tried. Now it’s over. It began here, and it ends here.”
The remark carried added significance because Neymar scored his first goal for Brazil at the same stadium in 2010 during a friendly against the United States.
The Brazil captain, who returned to the national team after an injury-hit spell, featured only twice during the tournament.
Despite converting a late penalty against Norway, he could not prevent Brazil’s earliest World Cup exit in more than three decades.
Expert Analysis
Football analysts say Norway’s disciplined defending and clinical finishing highlighted the growing competitiveness of international football, where tactical organisation can overcome traditional football powerhouses.
Brazil’s missed opportunities—including Bruno Guimarães’ first-half penalty—proved decisive, while Haaland once again demonstrated why he remains one of the world’s most prolific goalscorers.
Industry and Fan Reaction
Supporters across social media described Norway’s victory as one of the biggest World Cup upsets in recent memory.
Many praised Haaland’s leadership and composure under pressure, while Brazilian fans expressed disappointment over another early World Cup exit and uncertainty over Neymar’s international future.
What’s Next?
Norway will face England in one of the tournament’s most anticipated quarter-finals.
Haaland and Kane, two of Europe’s most prolific strikers, are expected to headline a contest that could determine one of the favourites to reach the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, attention in Brazil is likely to shift toward the future of the national team and whether Neymar’s emotional post-match comments truly signal the end of his international career.
