In a strong warning issued on December 28, 2024, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) expressed concern over the unprofessional behavior of some police officers and the fraudulent use of the Inspector-General of Police’s (IGP) name for illegal activities. The statement, signed by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, highlighted the persistent misconduct undermining the reputation of the NPF and eroding public trust.
The NPF emphasized that, despite repeated warnings and disciplinary actions, a small number of officers continue to engage in shameful acts that tarnish the Force’s image. The statement also pointed out a troubling trend where some individuals misuse the name and office of the IGP to intimidate their victims.
“Even more alarming is the fraudulent use of the name and office of the Inspector-General of Police to perpetrate these illegal acts. The intention behind this tactic is to intimidate victims into believing that the IGP is aware, and approves of their illegal activities. As a result, victims are often deterred from reporting these incidents to higher authorities,” the statement read.
Call to Action
The Police urged members of the public to report any misconduct by officers to their superiors, Heads of the Complaint Response Units (CRU), or the Commissioners of Police in their states. For ease of reporting, the contact details of key personnel have been made available:
DCP Akin Fakorede, Head, IGP Monitoring Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja – 08184077076
ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja – 08037168147
CSP Taiwo Oyewale, Head, IGP Special Investigation Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja – 08069318238
SP Sherriff Lawal, ADC (Aide-de-Camp) to the IGP – 08094712605
The NPF further cautioned Nigerians to remain vigilant when approached by individuals claiming connections with the IGP or other senior officers. “Members of the public are therefore advised to exercise caution when approached by officers or individuals claiming connections with the IGP or any senior officer for the purpose of influence or favor,” the statement noted.
Reaffirming Integrity and Accountability
The Nigeria Police Force assured citizens of its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and professionalism while urging the public to collaborate with the Force in ensuring justice and fairness.
“The Nigeria Police Force assures all Nigerians of its commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity and professionalism. We encourage the public to collaborate with us by reporting any suspicious activities to ensure that justice and fairness prevail at all times,” the statement concluded.
