The Nigeria Youth Organization (NYO) recently hosted its National Leadership Retreat at the Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos. The event, themed “Inside the Rubble of Gold: The Good of Our Country,” convened youth leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to deliberate on pressing national matters, particularly the proposed tax reform bill.

Chairman of the retreat’s planning committee, Kingsley Okes Idisi and other participants

Chairman of the retreat’s planning committee, Kingsley Okes Idisi, shared insights into the retreat’s purpose and the importance of its theme in an exclusive interview. He described Nigeria as a nation rich in resources yet burdened by inefficiencies.

“The concept of ‘rubble of gold’ represents the hidden opportunities within Nigeria’s current challenges,” Idisi explained. “Nigeria is a blessed nation, but the resources are often fragmented or hidden beneath layers of inefficiencies. It takes strategic focus and perseverance to harness these opportunities, especially for the youth.”

Proposed Tax Reform Bill: A Step Toward Economic Equity

Idisi commended the proposed tax reform bill, which aims to introduce a consumption-based Value-Added Tax (VAT) system and promote fiscal federalism. He described it as a necessary step toward fairness in economic resource allocation and regional development.

“The idea is for every region to benefit fairly from what it consumes or produces, fostering healthy competition among states to maximize their resources,” he stated.

Advocating for the Rule of Law

Highlighting the role of justice and the rule of law, Idisi pointed to its critical role in empowering Nigeria’s youth. He lamented systemic failures where merit and justice are often disregarded, stifling potential.

“The rule of law is essential for building strong institutions and ensuring equal opportunities. Without it, our youth cannot fully realize their potential,” he emphasized, referencing instances of individuals languishing in detention due to these shortcomings.

Empowering Nigeria’s Youth for Transformation

Idisi urged young Nigerians to stay determined and resilient despite the nation’s challenges. He drew parallels between the success stories of Nigerians abroad and the opportunities that fairness and justice could create within the country.

“With determination, resilience, and support from policies like the tax reform bill, the youth could transform Nigeria’s ‘rubble’ into gleaming gold,” he encouraged.

Commitment to Change

The retreat ended with a unanimous commitment from participants to advocate for equitable policies, transparency, and justice. The Nigeria Youth Organization pledged to act as a bridge between policymakers and citizens, ensuring that reforms reflect the aspirations of Nigerians.
