NUJ Urges Tech-driven Election Result Transmission Ahead of 2027 Polls
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has urged lawmakers to prioritise the use of technology in managing election results, warning that unclear procedures could undermine public trust and fuel political tension.
The call follows ongoing legislative deliberations on reforms to Nigeria’s electoral framework, particularly the handling and movement of results from polling units.
In a statement signed by its National President, Alhassan Yahya, the NUJ said clarity in electoral procedures was essential for national stability.
“As a professional body committed to democratic development, accountability, and public confidence in governance, the NUJ believes that clarity in electoral procedures is fundamental to national stability.”
Why it matters
Nigeria’s elections have often been contested, with disputes frequently linked to delays, inconsistencies, or controversies surrounding result collation.
The NUJ warned that uncertainty in result management could weaken trust in democratic institutions.
“Any ambiguity in the management of election outcomes risks eroding public trust and heightening tension within the polity.”
Technology and transparency
The journalists’ union said Nigerians have repeatedly demanded reforms that promote openness and verifiability in elections.
It noted that many democracies now rely on digital tools to protect the integrity of the ballot and reduce post-election disputes.
“Modern democracies are increasingly leveraging digital tools to safeguard the sanctity of the ballot and ensure that results reflect the will of the electorate without avoidable delays or uncertainties.”
The NUJ argued that the real-time electronic transfer of polling unit results would reduce suspicion and strengthen institutional credibility.
“The adoption of technology-driven mechanisms for the prompt relay of polling unit outcomes to designated collation platforms will significantly reduce suspicion, enhance transparency, and limit post-election disputes.”
What lawmakers are being urged to do
As preparations begin for the 2027 general elections, the NUJ called on legislators to ensure that electoral laws include clear and enforceable provisions on result transmission.
“The institutionalisation of clear and enforceable guidelines on the real-time transfer of election outcomes will demonstrate a commitment to credible and peaceful polls.”
The union said reforms should reflect global best practices while responding to Nigeria’s unique democratic challenges.
“Strengthening the framework for the management of election results will contribute meaningfully to political stability and deepen citizens’ faith in democratic governance.”
What’s next
Lawmakers are expected to conclude consultations on proposed electoral reforms in the coming months.
The NUJ says the decisions taken now will shape public confidence in the next general elections and Nigeria’s democratic trajectory.
“The NUJ calls on all stakeholders to act in the national interest and ensure that the electoral architecture for forthcoming elections promotes transparency, accountability, and public trust.”

Ondo at 50: APC Aspirant Hails Aiyedatiwa, Pledges Federal Push for Akoko North
Ondo State has marked its 50th anniversary with renewed calls for unity, continuity in governance and stronger federal representation, as political leaders reflect on the state’s journey since its creation in 1976.
Hon. Morufu Tosin Ibrahim, an aspirant for the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives ticket for Akoko North Federal Constituency, congratulated the government and people of the state on the milestone.
In a statement issued from Irun-Akoko, Mr Ibrahim said the progress recorded over five decades was built on the combined efforts of military administrators and civilian governors.
“The Sunshine State owes its remarkable progress to the dedicated service of our governors – from the military administrators who provided foundational stability… to civilian leaders such as Chief Michael Ajasin, Chief Bamidele Olumilua, Chief Adebayo Adefarati, Dr Olusegun Agagu, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, and Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN,” he said.
He added that investments in education, infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare and security had shaped the state’s development trajectory.
Why it matters
Ondo’s golden jubilee comes at a time when citizens are demanding accountable leadership, inclusive growth and tangible economic benefits across all senatorial districts.
Backing the current administration
Mr Ibrahim praised Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, saying the administration had sustained projects initiated by previous governments.
“His Excellency has demonstrated exemplary statesmanship by advancing key projects such as the Akungba-Ikare dual carriageway, cocoa value-chain enhancements for Akoko farmers, vocational training centres, and community security initiatives,” he said.
He described the approach as proof that “government is a continuum”, a principle often cited in policy circles as critical to long-term development.
2027 and federal ambitions
Looking ahead, Mr Ibrahim said his political ambition was driven by the need to attract more federal presence to Akoko North.
“If elected in 2027, I will work tirelessly in the National Assembly to attract federal resources for road rehabilitation, agricultural processing facilities, youth empowerment programmes, and economic diversification,” he said.
What’s next
He called on residents across Ondo North, Central and South to use the anniversary as a moment of unity and to support ongoing development initiatives under the Aiyedatiwa administration.
