Ogun Police Arrest Eight Foreign Nationals Over Alleged Fake Kidnapping, Ransom Fraud Scheme

Published

on

Police in Ogun State say they have dismantled a suspected transnational criminal network accused of staging a fake kidnapping to extort ransom from family members living abroad.

The operation, carried out by detectives attached to the Ifo Divisional Police Headquarters, led to the arrest of eight foreign nationals allegedly linked to the scheme in Adiyan Town, Agbado area of Ogun State.

According to the Ogun State Police Command, the suspects include nationals from Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Ivory Coast and the Republic of Benin.

Authorities say the investigation began after a report that a 23-year-old Mauritanian man, identified as Cheik El-Mehdi, contacted relatives overseas claiming he had been kidnapped in Nigeria and needed ransom money to secure his release.

Police allege that another suspect, Zakaria Zawadogo, reinforced the demand by threatening that the purported victim would be killed if payment was not made.

How the Investigation Unfolded

The Ogun State Police Command said detectives launched an intelligence-led investigation immediately after receiving the report.

According to police findings, technical intelligence traced the suspects to a hideout in Adiyan Town.

Officers subsequently arrested Zakaria Zawadogo, who allegedly led investigators to the location where the other suspects were found and taken into custody.

Police identified the remaining suspects as Suren Neta, Koffi Breno, Gondo Treso, Kunuji Ezekiel, Kougasi John and Hemue Blinsi.

Investigators secured and searched the premises as part of the operation.

Police Claim Kidnapping Was Staged

Preliminary findings suggest the alleged kidnapping was orchestrated as part of a coordinated fraud scheme targeting family members living outside Nigeria.

Police said investigations revealed that Suren Neta allegedly lured Cheik El-Mehdi into Nigeria, while Zakaria Zawadogo coordinated ransom demands and threats intended to pressure relatives into making payments.

Authorities further alleged that the supposed victim actively participated in planning the fake abduction.

The police said the principal suspects have confessed to their involvement, although the claims have not yet been tested in court.

Why This Matters

The case highlights growing concerns among security experts about the evolution of cross-border fraud networks operating across West Africa.

Security analysts say criminals are increasingly exploiting modern communication platforms and emotional manipulation tactics to target victims and their families across international borders.

The alleged scheme also underscores the challenges law enforcement agencies face in tackling transnational organised crime, particularly when multiple countries are involved.

Experts note that fake kidnapping scams have become more sophisticated globally, often relying on psychological pressure, fabricated evidence and urgent ransom demands to deceive victims.

Police Commend Detectives

The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, CP Bode Ojajuni, praised the officers involved in the operation.

He said: “The case highlights the increasing sophistication of transnational criminal activities and reaffirms the Command’s commitment to proactive policing, intelligence gathering, and sustained operations against organized crime.”

The commissioner also commended the professionalism and swift response of detectives led by CSP Olabisi Kamorudeen, saying their intelligence-led efforts helped uncover the alleged scheme before any ransom payment could be secured.

Public Urged to Remain Vigilant

The Ogun State Police Command urged residents to be cautious when confronted with kidnapping claims involving demands for urgent financial transfers.

Police advised members of the public to verify such reports through official channels and promptly report suspicious activities.

Authorities added that investigations are continuing to determine whether the suspects may have links to other criminal networks operating across national borders.

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.

on

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a popular content creator, Ifeanyi Ogbonna, widely known as “Odogwu of Asaba,” over allegations that he raped a 20-year-old woman who later died.

Police said the arrest followed a petition alleging that the woman travelled to Asaba on 1 June after the suspect invited her for what was presented as content creation training advertised through his social media platforms.

What police say happened

According to the Delta State Police Command, the woman was allegedly taken to a hotel after arriving in Asaba, where she was allegedly raped and physically assaulted.

Police said she later returned home traumatised and informed her parents about the incident.

Investigators said the woman also recorded a video before her death in which she described her alleged ordeal and the emotional distress she experienced afterwards.

According to police, she later ingested a toxic substance and died despite efforts to save her.

The allegations have not been tested in court, and the suspect remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Police launch investigation

Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, ordered an immediate investigation after receiving the petition.

The Command said officers from the Area Command, Effurun, began investigations, leading to the arrest of the suspect.

He added that the Command remains committed to ensuring “the investigation is conducted professionally and that appropriate legal action is taken in accordance with the law.”

Why it matters

The case has renewed attention on concerns about sexual violence, online recruitment through social media, and the need for stronger protection of young people seeking opportunities in Nigeria’s growing digital content industry.

It also highlights the importance of timely reporting of alleged sexual offences and ensuring survivors have access to medical, legal and psychological support.

Expert perspective

Legal practitioners say allegations of rape resulting in death require investigators to gather medical, forensic, digital and witness evidence to determine criminal responsibility.

They also note that prosecutors must establish the facts independently before any criminal liability can be determined in court.

Public and industry reaction

The arrest has generated widespread discussion on social media, with many users calling for a transparent investigation and justice for the deceased.

Women’s rights advocates have also renewed calls for stronger enforcement of laws protecting survivors of sexual violence and greater awareness of safe recruitment practices for aspiring content creators.

Oyo Police Rescue Kidnapped Girl, Arrest Suspects, Recover ₦200m Stolen Rail Tracks

Published

on

The Oyo State Police Command says it has arrested two suspected kidnappers and rescued a five-year-old girl who was abducted in Ibadan, while in a separate operation it also arrested three men over the alleged theft of railway tracks valued at about ₦200 million.

The two operations, announced on Tuesday, highlight the Command’s ongoing campaign against violent crime and economic sabotage through intelligence-led policing.

Child rescued after intelligence-led operation

Police said five-year-old Miss Fikayo Gbemiga was abducted from her family’s residence in the Iyana Offa area of Ibadan on 3 July 2026.

According to the Command, operatives of its Anti-Kidnapping Squad launched an intensive investigation, using technology and other investigative tools to trace the suspects.

The operation led officers to a hideout in the Mojoyin Molade area of Iwo Road, Ibadan, where two suspects were arrested at about 10:30 p.m. on 11 July.

The child was rescued unhurt minutes later and immediately taken for medical attention, police said.

Ransom payment uncovered

Preliminary investigations identified the suspects as Adegboye Seyi Sunday, 37, and Adegboye Elijah Adefemi, 25.

Police alleged that the pair entered the family’s home unlawfully, abducted the child and demanded a ransom of ₦10 million for her release.

Investigators also said the suspects had already received ₦1 million in ransom from the victim’s family during negotiations in Gbongan, Osun State, on 8 July.

The Command said efforts are continuing to recover the money and arrest other suspected members of the kidnapping network.

Police commend officers

Oyo State Commissioner of Police, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, praised the officers involved in the rescue.

He said the successful operation demonstrated the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to tackling kidnapping and other violent crimes.

The Commissioner also urged residents to continue providing credible and timely information, assuring the public that all intelligence would be treated confidentially and acted upon promptly.

Separate operation targets railway vandalismRecovered railway tracks allegedly stolen from Niger State displayed beside a HOWO truck seized by Oyo State Police.

In another operation, the Command said it arrested three suspected members of a railway vandalism syndicate and recovered stolen railway tracks estimated to be worth ₦200 million.

Police said the arrests followed information provided by a member of the public.

Acting on the tip-off, operatives from the Monitoring Unit intercepted the suspects on 14 July in the Gambari, Orile-Igbon area of Oyo State before the railway materials could allegedly be transported to Lagos.

Three suspects arrested

Those arrested were identified as Waheed Ayinde, 54, Muhammed Sani, 27, and Hassan Ibrahim, 22.

Police also recovered a HOWO truck bearing registration number CAL 972 XA from Cross River State, which investigators believe was used to transport the stolen materials.

According to preliminary investigations, the railway tracks were allegedly removed from Niger State and transported into Oyo State as part of a wider criminal operation.

Investigators believe Lagos was the intended destination.

Police said each suspect allegedly played different roles, including transporting, coordinating and temporarily storing the stolen railway infrastructure.

The suspects have reportedly made confessional statements while investigations continue to identify and arrest other members of the syndicate.

Why it matters

Kidnapping for ransom remains one of Nigeria’s major security challenges, with families often facing prolonged negotiations and significant financial losses.

The theft and vandalism of railway infrastructure also pose serious economic risks, disrupting transport services, increasing repair costs and threatening public safety.

Security analysts say intelligence-led policing, combined with information from local communities, has become increasingly important in preventing organised criminal activities.

Transport experts have also repeatedly warned that vandalism of railway assets undermines public investment in rail infrastructure and can delay efforts to improve cargo and passenger transportation across the country.

Public cooperation praised

The Commissioner of Police described the latest railway operation as evidence of the value of cooperation between residents and security agencies.

He urged members of the public to continue reporting suspicious activities, saying prompt intelligence enables officers to respond before crimes escalate.

What happens next

Police said investigations into both cases are continuing.

Authorities are working to recover the ransom allegedly paid to the kidnappers, identify additional suspects connected to both criminal networks and prepare the arrested suspects for prosecution.
