Old Video of Suspected Kidnappers’ Arrest in Ijebu-Igbo Resurfaces Online, Authorities Clarify
A viral video claiming to show the recent arrest of suspected kidnappers in Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State, has been confirmed as old footage from 2024, amid growing concerns over misinformation on social media.
The clarification follows renewed circulation of the clip across X (formerly Twitter), WhatsApp, and other social media platforms, where users falsely presented the footage as a fresh security incident.
The post at the centre of the circulation can be viewed here: [X post showing the resurfaced video](https://x.com/fineurl9128/status/2057139682308219343?s=46
Authorities urge caution over misinformation
In a statement issued to calm public concerns, officials said the footage did not depict a recent operation and warned against spreading unverified security-related content online.
“The video circulating online showing the arrest of suspected kidnappers in Ijebu-Igbo is old footage from 2024 and not recent,” the clarification stated.
“The public is advised to disregard misleading claims and verify information before sharing.”
The clarification comes at a time when insecurity and kidnapping reports remain highly sensitive issues across parts of Nigeria, often triggering panic among residents whenever videos or rumours emerge online.
Why the clarification matters
False or recycled security footage has increasingly become a challenge for authorities and fact-checkers in Nigeria, especially on fast-moving social media platforms.
Security analysts say misleading videos can heighten public fear, damage trust in official communication, and distract security agencies from ongoing operations.
Digital media experts also warn that old videos frequently resurface during periods of heightened public anxiety, sometimes without context or timestamps.
According to media literacy advocates, users should check publication dates, credible news reports, and official statements before reposting alarming content.
Social media and the spread of recycled videos
The resurfacing of old clips has become a recurring issue in Nigeria’s online information space.
Experts say videos are often reposted without dates, captions are altered, and older incidents are reframed as current events to generate engagement or provoke reactions.
Residents in Ogun State also expressed concern that unverified reports could create unnecessary fear within communities already dealing with security anxieties.
Calls for responsible sharing
Authorities and media experts are urging Nigerians to rely on credible news organisations and official security channels when verifying incidents related to crime and public safety.
They also advised users to avoid forwarding videos or claims that lack clear dates, locations, or confirmation from trusted sources.
What’s next?
Observers say the latest incident may renew calls for stronger digital literacy campaigns and quicker fact-checking responses from both government agencies and independent media organisations.
As misinformation continues to evolve online, analysts argue that public awareness remains one of the strongest tools against false narratives.

President Tinubu Commends NDLEA After $360m Drug Bust Linked to Nigerian-Mexican Syndicate
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) after operatives dismantled what authorities described as a major Nigerian-Mexican drug trafficking network operating in Nigeria.
The operation, announced on Wednesday by NDLEA Chairman Mohammed Buba Marwa, led to the arrest of foreign nationals, suspected local drug kingpins, and several collaborators. Authorities also seized chemicals and illicit drugs valued at more than $360m.
The Presidency described the crackdown as one of the agency’s most significant anti-drug operations in recent years, highlighting growing concerns over West Africa’s role in global narcotics trafficking.
Tinubu praises NDLEA operation
In a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu commended the agency for what he called “exceptional professionalism, courage, and unwavering commitment”.
“This successful operation, which led to the arrest of foreign nationals, local kingpins and other collaborators, as well as the seizure of chemicals and illicit drugs valued at over $360 million, demonstrates exceptional professionalism, courage, and unwavering commitment to safeguarding society from the devastating effects of narcotics,” the President said.
He also urged NDLEA officials to remain vigilant in tackling organised crime networks.
“I commend the bravery, resilience, and dedication displayed by operatives of the NDLEA throughout this mission. I urge them not to be complacent in confronting the menace of drug trafficking,” he added.
Why the drug bust matters
The operation comes amid increasing international concern over the use of West Africa as a transit route for cocaine, synthetic drugs, and illicit pharmaceuticals destined for Europe and North America.
Security analysts say criminal syndicates are increasingly exploiting weak border controls, rising youth unemployment, and expanding international smuggling routes across the region.
President Tinubu acknowledged the broader regional threat in his statement.
“West Africa has become a great concern in the global war against narcotics as drug barons turn our region into a transit hub for moving cocaine, synthetic drugs and unregulated pharmaceuticals to Europe and North America,” he said.
Anti-drug advocates warn that beyond security implications, the spread of narcotics is fuelling addiction, crime, and public health challenges among young people across Nigeria.
“Drugs not only pose a critical security threat for our region, but they also pose a grave danger to the future of our youth, some of whom have become victims of the trade,” the President stated.
Public urged to support anti-drug campaign
President Tinubu called on Nigerians to assist law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious activities in their communities.
“I call on all Nigerians to see the fight against illicit drugs not NDLEA’s alone. Everyone has a role to play. We must remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities within our communities to assist security agencies in combating criminal networks,” he said.
He added that the latest operation sends a strong warning to organised criminal groups operating within the country.
“This landmark success is a strong message that our security agencies will not tolerate organised crime and criminality anywhere in the country, and that those who threaten public safety and national security will face the wrath of the law.”
Growing pressure on security agencies
The latest seizure is expected to intensify calls for stronger regional intelligence-sharing and tighter border enforcement across West Africa.
Experts say Nigeria’s anti-narcotics agencies face mounting pressure to combat increasingly sophisticated international drug syndicates using encrypted communications, cross-border logistics, and local collaborators.
The NDLEA has in recent years expanded operations targeting synthetic drug laboratories, cross-border trafficking routes, and illicit pharmaceutical distribution networks.
What happens next?
Authorities are expected to continue investigations into the financial and international links connected to the syndicate.
Legal proceedings against those arrested are also likely to begin in the coming weeks, while investigators trace supply chains, assets, and possible collaborators within and outside Nigeria.

NDLEA Launches Clean Beat 91.5FM to Tackle Drug Abuse Among Nigerian Youth
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has launched its own radio station, Clean Beat 91.5FM, as part of efforts to combat drug abuse and reshape public attitudes towards illicit substances in Nigeria.
The station was officially commissioned in Abuja on Thursday by NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Buba Marwa, who warned that “toxic pop-culture” promoting substance abuse poses a growing threat to Nigerian youth.
Speaking at the launch, Mr Marwa said drug abuse was increasingly being portrayed as fashionable and socially acceptable, especially through entertainment and digital culture.
“We will counter the toxic pop-culture that glamourises drug abuse by replacing it with a vibrant, alternative culture — one that celebrates sobriety, showcases real stories of recovery, and provides accurate, life-saving information,” he said.
The NDLEA said the station would serve as a national advocacy platform under its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign, broadcasting educational programmes, recovery stories, youth-focused discussions, and public awareness content.
Why it matters
Nigeria has faced rising concerns over substance abuse in recent years, particularly among young people.
Public health experts have repeatedly warned that addiction contributes to insecurity, unemployment, mental health challenges, family breakdown, and declining productivity.
Marwa said the consequences could become severe if public narratives around drug use remain unchecked.
“Substance abuse is a hydra-headed monster that feeds insecurity, decimates public health, cripples economic productivity, and compromises the very future of our workforce,” he said.
He added that enforcement alone could not solve the problem.
“While enforcement wins battles, education and prevention win wars,” the NDLEA chairman said.
According to the agency, radio remains one of the most accessible communication tools in Nigeria, capable of reaching citizens in homes, markets, schools, and rural communities.
International and government support
The launch drew support from international organisations and Nigerian government agencies.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime praised the initiative, describing it as a people-centred approach to drug control.
Representing the UN Country Representative, Dr Akanidomo Ibanga said:
“Through this platform, NDLEA is taking the drug control message directly to the people — into homes, communities, schools, and streets.”
He added that the station aligned with Nigeria’s National Drug Control Master Plan.
The Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission, Charles Ebuebu, described the station as more than just another broadcaster.
“It represents the strategic deployment of broadcasting as an instrument of national orientation, behavioural change, youth engagement and social transformation,” he said.
The National Orientation Agency also backed the project, saying it could support positive behavioural change and public reorientation.
NDLEA links media campaign to national security
The NDLEA chairman said the agency viewed the fight against drug abuse as both a public health and national security issue.
He said officers continued to intercept illicit drug shipments and dismantle trafficking networks, but stressed that prevention was equally important.
Marwa thanked Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving funding for the station, alongside support from the National Security Adviser, the NBC, and international partners.
“Today, we are amplifying hope,” he said. “Clean Beat 91.5 FM will stand as a beacon of light, constantly reminding us that a drug-free Nigeria is not an idealistic dream — it is an achievable reality.”
What’s next?
The NDLEA says Clean Beat 91.5FM will focus heavily on youth engagement through educational programming, interviews, music, advocacy campaigns, and recovery-focused storytelling.
The agency is also expected to integrate the station into its wider anti-drug awareness campaigns across schools and communities nationwide.
Analysts say the success of the initiative may depend on whether the station can attract young listeners in an increasingly digital media environment dominated by streaming platforms and social media.

Nigeria Police Force Disowns ‘AFRIPOL 2026’ Programme, Warns Public Against Sponsorship
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has publicly distanced itself from a programme titled “AFRIPOL 2026”, describing it as unauthorized and misleading.
In a statement issued on 20 May 2026, the Force said it neither approved nor endorsed the event, which has been promoted online using the name “AFRIPOL”.
Police authorities also condemned the use of the name, noting that AFRIPOL is an official policing mechanism established under the African Union framework and not a platform for private events or commercial programmes.
The statement was signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid.
“The Nigeria Police Force wishes to state categorically that it did not approve, endorse, or authorize the purported ‘AFRIPOL 2026’ programme currently being circulated online,” the statement read.
The Force added that the Inspector-General of Police did not permit the use of his image, the police logo, or the identity of the NPF in connection with the programme.
“The leadership of the Nigeria Police Force did not authorize the use of the image of the Inspector-General of Police, the official logo, or the identity of the Force in connection with the said programme.”
Why It Matters
The warning comes amid growing concerns over the misuse of government and security agency identities for unauthorized conferences, awards, investment schemes, and public events.
Security experts say fake endorsements linked to public institutions can mislead businesses, sponsors, and members of the public into making payments or partnerships under false pretences.
In Nigeria, official logos and identities of government institutions are often viewed as indicators of legitimacy, making unauthorized use particularly sensitive.
Analysts say such incidents can damage public trust and expose individuals and companies to financial risks.
What Is AFRIPOL?
AFRIPOL, officially known as the African Union Mechanism for Police Cooperation, was established by the African Union to strengthen police collaboration across African countries in areas including counterterrorism, cybercrime, intelligence sharing, and transnational crime prevention.
The Nigeria Police Force emphasized that AFRIPOL is an official continental policing structure and not a private event brand.
The clarification appears aimed at preventing confusion between legitimate African Union security initiatives and privately organized programmes using similar branding.
Public Warning From Police
The police urged Nigerians, corporate organizations, and potential sponsors to avoid any financial or official engagement linked to the event.
“Members of the public and corporate organizations are advised to disregard the publication and refrain from any form of sponsorship, payment, or engagement relating to the said event.”
The Force did not indicate whether investigations are underway to identify those behind the programme’s promotion.
Industry and Public Perspectives
Legal and branding professionals say unauthorized use of institutional names and official imagery could amount to impersonation, fraud, or trademark-related violations depending on the circumstances.
Public affairs analysts also note that fake or misleading event promotions have become more common online, especially through social media advertisements and messaging platforms.
They advise organisations to independently verify government partnerships and endorsements before making payments or sponsorship commitments.
What Happens Next?
The Nigeria Police Force may face increasing pressure to strengthen digital monitoring and public awareness efforts against impersonation and unauthorized use of official identities online.
Observers say the case also highlights the need for stricter verification systems for conferences and public programmes claiming affiliations with government or international bodies.
