Ondo Governor Aiyedatiwa Pardons Seven Prisoners on 61st Birthday
Ondo State Governor Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has exercised his constitutional powers to pardon and release seven convicted prisoners, a move aimed at easing prison congestion and supporting rehabilitation.
The pardons were announced on Sunday, coinciding with the governor’s 61st birthday, and come weeks after a broader clemency programme approved at the start of the year.
Officials say the decision reflects the administration’s emphasis on restorative justice rather than punishment alone.
Background: A growing clemency programme
The latest releases build on a larger pardon granted on 1 January 2026, when the governor approved clemency for 77 convicts during the New Year celebrations.
That decision followed recommendations from the Ondo State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, which reviews cases of inmates eligible for pardon or sentence reduction.
Together, the two actions bring the number of beneficiaries of the governor’s clemency policy this year to 84 inmates.
How the beneficiaries were chosen
According to the government, the seven inmates were selected after a review of verified reports on their conduct and rehabilitation.
The criteria included genuine remorse, good behaviour, participation in reform programmes, and a strong likelihood of successful reintegration into society.
State officials say the outright release of the inmates aligns with efforts to ensure prisons focus on correction rather than long-term punishment.
Official reaction
The Chairman of the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, Dr Kayode Ajulo, SAN, praised the governor’s decision.
“This reaffirms his administration’s commitment to balancing accountability with mercy, reforming the justice sector, and promoting a society where redemption is possible,” he said.
The government describes the move as part of a broader justice reform agenda under Governor Aiyedatiwa.
What’s next
The Ondo State Government says it will continue to rely on professional assessments from the Advisory Council before approving future pardons.
Officials also say reintegration support will remain key to ensuring released inmates return as productive members of society.

Ondo at 50: APC Aspirant Hails Aiyedatiwa, Pledges Federal Push for Akoko North
Ondo State has marked its 50th anniversary with renewed calls for unity, continuity in governance and stronger federal representation, as political leaders reflect on the state’s journey since its creation in 1976.
Hon. Morufu Tosin Ibrahim, an aspirant for the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives ticket for Akoko North Federal Constituency, congratulated the government and people of the state on the milestone.
In a statement issued from Irun-Akoko, Mr Ibrahim said the progress recorded over five decades was built on the combined efforts of military administrators and civilian governors.
“The Sunshine State owes its remarkable progress to the dedicated service of our governors – from the military administrators who provided foundational stability… to civilian leaders such as Chief Michael Ajasin, Chief Bamidele Olumilua, Chief Adebayo Adefarati, Dr Olusegun Agagu, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, and Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN,” he said.
He added that investments in education, infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare and security had shaped the state’s development trajectory.
Why it matters
Ondo’s golden jubilee comes at a time when citizens are demanding accountable leadership, inclusive growth and tangible economic benefits across all senatorial districts.
Backing the current administration
Mr Ibrahim praised Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, saying the administration had sustained projects initiated by previous governments.
“His Excellency has demonstrated exemplary statesmanship by advancing key projects such as the Akungba-Ikare dual carriageway, cocoa value-chain enhancements for Akoko farmers, vocational training centres, and community security initiatives,” he said.
He described the approach as proof that “government is a continuum”, a principle often cited in policy circles as critical to long-term development.
2027 and federal ambitions
Looking ahead, Mr Ibrahim said his political ambition was driven by the need to attract more federal presence to Akoko North.
“If elected in 2027, I will work tirelessly in the National Assembly to attract federal resources for road rehabilitation, agricultural processing facilities, youth empowerment programmes, and economic diversification,” he said.

He called on residents across Ondo North, Central and South to use the anniversary as a moment of unity and to support ongoing development initiatives under the Aiyedatiwa administration.
