Ooni of Ife to Headline New Telegraph Awards Night in Lagos

Published

on

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has accepted to serve as Royal Father of the Day at the New Telegraph Awards Night and Dinner in Lagos this Friday.

Former Ogun State Governor and veteran journalist, Aremo Olusegun Osoba, will chair the event.

The ceremony will take place at the Grand Ballroom of Oriental Hotels, Lagos.

Organisers say nine state governors have confirmed attendance, alongside business leaders, bankers, public officials and sports personalities.

The awards recognise individuals in politics, business, finance and public service.

Why It Matters

The presence of the Ooni of Ife, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential traditional rulers, adds cultural and political weight to the event.

His participation reflects the growing intersection between traditional institutions and modern governance.

For Osoba, a former Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Times and past governor, the role underscores the continued influence of journalism veterans in public life.

What the Organisers Said

In a letter to the monarch, the Management of Daily Telegraph Publishing Company said the Ooni’s selection was based on his record of leadership.

“Your Highness, it is important to let you know that you were chosen because of your position as not only the Paramount Ruler of one of the largest and homogenous nations in Nigeria, but also because of your dedication to service, excellence, reward and honesty in your over 10-year reign on the throne of your ancestors.”

The letter was delivered personally by the Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief, Mr Ayodele Aminu.

Speaking on Osoba’s selection, Aminu said:

“Osoba reflects the dream of not only journalists but every profession because he did not forget his roots and easily identifies with his colleagues, no matter the gap in age and experience.”

Osoba, a Grand Patron of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, remains active in media circles years after serving as governor.

What’s Next

The awards night is expected to draw political heavyweights and corporate leaders.

Organisers say the event will celebrate “excellence across sectors.”

Observers will be watching not just the award recipients, but also the networking and political signals emerging from the gathering.

Face of Maryland Nigeria Announces 2026 Season 3 Grand Finale in Lagos

Published

on

Face of Maryland Nigeria has announced that the third season of its beauty and leadership pageant will end with a grand finale in Lagos on 22 November 2026.

The organisers say the event will combine a beauty contest with cultural displays, talent showcases and leadership-focused activities. The winner will be crowned the new Face of Maryland Nigeria Queen.

The organisers have chosen “Celebrating Beauty, Culture & Purpose” as the theme for the 2026 edition.

According to the organisation, the pageant aims to identify young people who can use their public profile to promote youth development, community service and other social causes.

However, the announcement does not provide details on the number of contestants, the selection criteria, the judges, the prize package or specific projects completed by previous winners.

From beauty pageant to leadership platform

Face of Maryland Nigeria describes itself as more than a conventional beauty contest. It says contestants receive mentorship and leadership training covering areas including advocacy, entrepreneurship, education and community development.

The organisers have also said the platform is designed to produce ambassadors who can contribute to their communities.

Why the cultural focus matters

The pageant’s emphasis on culture comes as Nigeria’s creative industries receive greater attention from policymakers and investors.

The Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy identifies fashion, festivals, performance arts, photography and other cultural activities as parts of Nigeria’s creative economy. The ministry says the sector can contribute to economic diversification, job creation and cultural development.

Nigeria has also introduced initiatives aimed at expanding financing and opportunities within the creative sector. The Creative Economy Development Fund, for example, is designed to support businesses in areas including fashion, music, film, publishing and other creative industries.

UNESCO has similarly identified Nigeria’s cultural and creative industries, including fashion, performing arts and crafts, as areas with potential for enterprise development and cultural preservation.

This wider policy environment gives cultural events an opportunity to connect entertainment with skills development and economic activity.

But the value of a pageant cannot be measured by the size of its finale alone. Its longer-term contribution would depend on whether contestants gain useful skills, secure opportunities and deliver verifiable community projects.

What the 2026 finale will feature

The organisers say the 22 November event will include cultural performances, runway presentations, talent showcases, keynote sessions and entertainment.

Awards will also be presented before the new queen is crowned.

The organisation expects government officials, business executives, traditional rulers, media personalities, celebrities, fashion enthusiasts and other guests to attend.

Sponsorship and partnerships

Face of Maryland Nigeria is seeking support from companies, government agencies, development organisations, non-governmental organisations, entrepreneurs and philanthropists for the event.

The organisers are also inviting media organisations to collaborate on the programme.

What happens next?

The immediate focus will be preparations for the 22 November finale and the activities leading to the crowning of the new queen.

The extent to which the new queen and other contestants turn the promised “Beauty, Culture & Purpose” into measurable work in their communities will ultimately determine the lasting impact of Season 3.

Okocha Beats Portable After Dramatic Walkout in Lagos Boxing Rematch

Published

on

Charles Okocha has reclaimed bragging rights over street-pop singer Portable after the latter was disqualified following a dramatic walkout during their celebrity boxing rematch in Lagos.

The bout, billed as “Unfinished Business”, ended abruptly in the opening round on Friday, 31 July, at the Balmoral Convention Centre, Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island.

Portable was disqualified after leaving the ring, handing victory to Mr Okocha without the contest reaching its natural conclusion.

The result settles the official outcome of a rematch that had been promoted around the pair’s rivalry, which first drew public attention after their previous encounter in December 2023.

Why Portable was disqualified

The contest became contentious before Portable left the ring.

According to the event organisers, Portable took Mr Okocha to the canvas in what appeared to be a wrestling-style move, prompting the referee and security personnel to intervene.

Portable subsequently returned and argued that the takedown should have resulted in victory for him.

Officials, however, maintained the rules of the contest and upheld the decision to disqualify him.

From rivalry to commercial spectacle

The event attracted celebrities, sports enthusiasts and entertainment fans, with organisers describing it as one of Nigeria’s biggest entertainment spectacles.

For sponsors, such events offer access to audiences drawn by personalities rather than conventional sporting competition. For participants, they provide a platform to extend rivalries and personal brands beyond music, film or social media.

The event also featured a series of celebrity and professional boxing contests.

Basit “Joker Boy” Adebayo, Yusuf Adeniji, Suleiman Jafaru, Michael Babalola and Shiloh “Sugar Shy” Defreitas were among those reported to have won their respective bouts.

Why Fearless sponsored the event

Fearless Energy Drink, owned by Rite Foods Limited, was the event’s energy drink sponsor.

Olaniyi Aderuku, Brand Manager of Fearless Energy Drink, said the sponsorship reflected the company’s commitment to platforms that celebrate “courage, confidence, resilience, and determination”.

“The partnership reflects the brand’s commitment to supporting bold platforms that celebrate courage, confidence, resilience, and determination while creating memorable experiences for consumers.”

Mr Aderuku also commended the organisers and expressed optimism about future collaborations to support sports and entertainment in Nigeria.

He linked the sponsorship to Fearless Energy Drink’s “I CAN, I AM” philosophy, which he said encourages Nigerians to confront challenges with confidence and pursue their ambitions.

What the sponsorship tells us

The partnership illustrates how Nigeria’s entertainment industry continues to create opportunities for brands seeking to associate themselves with high-energy events and popular personalities.

For Fearless, the celebrity boxing event provides a direct connection between its brand identity and an activity built around competition, spectacle and public attention.

The company also describes itself as Nigeria’s “market leader” in the energy drink category and says it pioneered PET bottle packaging in the sector.

Fearless Classic and Fearless Red Berry are available in cans, while the brand also sells its products in PET bottles.

What happens next?

For Okocha, the immediate outcome is a victory and the restoration of bragging rights after a rematch that lasted only part of one round.

For Portable, the circumstances of the defeat leave the sporting substance of the contest open to debate, particularly because the fight ended through disqualification rather than a conventional knockout or judges’ decision.

The larger question is whether celebrity boxing in Nigeria will evolve into a more formally regulated sporting product or remain primarily an entertainment spectacle.

As more brands and celebrities enter the space, the credibility of the rules, transparency of officiating and safety of participants will become increasingly important to audiences paying to watch.

Mount Zion Actor Oluwasegun Oyeyemi Dies as Christian Film Industry Mourns Abattoir Star

Published

on

Mount Zion actor Oluwasegun Oyeyemi, known for his role in Abattoir.

The Nigerian Christian movie industry is mourning the death of gospel actor Oluwasegun Oyeyemi, widely recognised for playing Flora’s husband in the popular Mount Zion film series Abattoir.

News of his death was announced on Wednesday by the Bowen University Alumni Association in an Instagram post. The association did not disclose the cause of death.

Why it matters

Oyeyemi was one of the familiar faces in Nigeria’s faith-based film industry, where he built a reputation for portraying Christian characters and using drama to communicate gospel messages.

His death is the latest in a series of losses involving members of the Abattoir cast, raising fresh emotions among fans of the widely watched Christian television series.

Tributes pour in

In its announcement, the Bowen University Alumni Association described Oyeyemi as “a respected alumnus, drama minister and a man whose life touched many people through Christian ministry.”

The association appealed to alumni to remember his family in their prayers, asking God to grant them “strength, comfort and peace” during their period of mourning.

It also encouraged members living in Ibadan and neighbouring communities to attend his burial ceremonies and pay their final respects.

Burial arrangements announced

According to the burial announcement, a Service of Songs will be held in Ibadan on Thursday, July 2, while the late actor will be buried on Friday, July 3, at the Garden of Saints Cemetery.

Those planning to attend have been asked to wear white clothing.

A career dedicated to Christian films

Beyond Abattoir, Oyeyemi featured in several productions by Mount Zion Faith Ministries, including Fiwajomi, Seyifunmi, Olukoya and Finding Grace.

His performances earned him recognition among audiences who followed Nigeria’s growing Christian film industry, where faith-based movies continue to attract viewers across Africa and beyond.

Industry perspective

Faith-based filmmaking has become an important part of Nigeria’s entertainment landscape, producing films that combine biblical teachings with contemporary social issues.

Industry observers say the deaths of prominent actors can leave a significant gap, particularly in a niche sector where experienced performers often mentor younger talents and help sustain audience loyalty.

Looking back at recent losses

Oyeyemi’s death comes more than a year after actress Toluwalope Adegboyega-Alagbe, who played Flora, his on-screen wife in Abattoir, died from injuries sustained in a road crash along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in December 2024.

The accident also claimed the life of one of her two-year-old twin daughters.

The Christian film community also lost veteran Abattoir actor Moses Korede Are, popularly known as Baba Gbenro, in 2024.

What’s next?

Fans, colleagues and members of the Christian community are expected to gather in Ibadan to celebrate Oyeyemi’s life and legacy during the scheduled funeral events.

His passing is likely to spark renewed conversations about preserving the contributions of pioneers and performers who have shaped Nigeria’s faith-based film industry.
