In a televised broadcast on Sunday, August 4, 2024, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu addressed the ongoing nationwide protests, expressing a heavy heart and sense of responsibility. He acknowledged the turmoil and violent protests, particularly the loss of lives and destruction of public facilities.

President Tinubu stated, “I am especially pained by the loss of lives in Borno, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna and other states, the destruction of public facilities in some states, and the wanton looting of supermarkets and shops, contrary to the promise of protest organisers that the protest would be peaceful across the country.”

He commiserated with the families of those who have died in the protests and urged protesters to suspend further protests and create room for dialogue. “Nigeria requires all hands on deck and needs us all – regardless of age, party, tribe, religion or other divides, to work together in reshaping our destiny as a nation.”

President Tinubu emphasized his commitment to good governance, stating, “My vision for our country is one of a just and prosperous nation where each person may enjoy the peace, freedom, and meaningful livelihood that only democratic good governance can provide – one that is open, transparent and accountable to the Nigerian people.”

He highlighted his administration’s achievements, including significant strides in rebuilding the foundation of the economy, increasing government revenues, and embarking on major infrastructure projects. He also mentioned initiatives such as the student loan scheme, Consumer Credit Corporation, and programs to empower youth and stimulate economic growth.

President Tinubu encouraged Nigerians to work together to build a brighter future, saying, “Let us choose hope over fear, unity over division, and progress over stagnation. The economy is recovering; Please, don’t shut out its oxygen.”

He concluded by emphasizing the importance of security and human rights, stating, “Security operatives should continue to maintain peace, law, and order in our country following the necessary conventions on human rights, to which Nigeria is a signatory. The safety and security of all Nigerians are paramount.”
