Senate Summons Aviation Minister as Domestic Airfares Surge to ₦600,000

Published

on

Nigeria’s Senate has summoned the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, along with airline operators and regulators, over the sharp rise in domestic flight ticket prices.

The decision followed a motion raised on Tuesday by Senator Buhari Abdulfatai, who warned that the rapidly increasing fares pose a risk to national mobility and could worsen travel disruptions as Christmas approaches.

He said Nigerians have been alarmed by the surge, with a one-way ticket from Abuja to Lagos now costing between ₦400,000 and ₦600,000 — a price many cannot afford.

Why it matters

The rise in airfares comes at a time when many Nigerians are turning to air travel due to insecurity on major highways.

Lawmakers fear that the cost spike could leave thousands stranded, harm businesses that rely on interstate movement, and increase pressure on already stretched road transport systems.

“Immediate steps must be taken before the festive period.” — Senator Buhari Abdulfatai

Senators voice public frustration

Senator Buhari said the price surge has “continuously distressed citizens,” adding that many see flying as the only safe travel option.

“We need to invite stakeholders of our airline agencies to interact and interrogate the issues. Immediate steps must be taken before the festive period,” he said.

Other senators backed the motion, with several describing the situation as “untenable” for ordinary travellers.

Industry reactions inside the Senate

During the debate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu attempted to justify the fare increase, citing rising operational costs and the high price of aircraft spare parts.

His explanation drew immediate criticism from colleagues who argued that airlines must not transfer the full economic burden onto passengers.

The Senate eventually agreed unanimously  to summon the Aviation Minister, airline operators, regulators and industry stakeholders to explain the price hike and present measures to reduce fares.

What’s next?

The Senate Committee on Aviation is expected to schedule an emergency meeting with the minister and stakeholders in the coming days.

Lawmakers say the goal is to restore price stability, protect travellers ahead of the festive season, and review regulatory oversight of fare adjustments.

Nigeria, Brazil Sign Bilateral Air Service Agreement to Launch Direct Flights

Published

on

Nigeria and Brazil have signed a Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA), paving the way for direct passenger and cargo flights between the two countries.

The milestone agreement was concluded during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s two-day state visit to Brazil, where he met with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brasília.

Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Olorogun Festus Keyamo SAN, and Brazil’s Minister of Transport, Silvio Costa Filho, signed the pact in the presence of both presidents.

Landmark for aviation and diplomacy

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Aviation Minister’s spokesperson, Tunde Moshood, the deal represents a breakthrough in Nigeria’s international aviation relations.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, today, commenced a two-day state visit to the Federative Republic of Brazil where he signed a landmark bilateral air service agreement with the largest South American country,” the statement read in part.

It added: “A major highlight of the visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) formalizing a Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) between Nigeria and Brazil. The agreement was signed by Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Olorogun Festus Keyamo SAN, alongside Brazil’s Minister of Transport, Silvio Costa Filho, in the presence of both Heads of State.”

Boost for trade, tourism, and cultural ties

The BASA provides a formal framework for direct air connectivity that is expected to deepen economic, cultural, and diplomatic ties. Experts say it could open new markets for Nigerian businesses, encourage Brazilian investments, and attract more tourists to both countries.

With Nigeria being Africa’s largest economy and Brazil the biggest in South America, aviation analysts predict that the new routes could become a strong commercial corridor, enhancing bilateral trade and cultural exchange.

Wider implications

The signing is part of Nigeria’s broader aviation expansion strategy, aimed at positioning the country as a regional hub for West Africa. Direct flights are also expected to reduce travel costs and time, making it easier for Nigerians and Brazilians to connect for business, leisure, and education.

Ogun State Airport Secures NCAA Permit for Commercial Flights

Published

on

Ogun State has made aviation history as its Gateway International Airport received official approval from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to commence scheduled commercial air transport operations.

The NCAA granted the airport an Aerodrome Operational Permit after a rigorous process involving technical inspections, on-site verification, and a full facility audit.

Officials of the regulatory authority described the facility as “a benchmark for what airports should be in Nigeria.”

Permit Details and Standards

According to the permit, Gateway International Airport has been certified with an Aerodrome Reference Code of 3C and an Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting Services (ARFFS) Category 6.

The certification also includes a non-precision runway operating category for Runway 05/23, along with an Area Navigation (RNAV) approach type.

International and Domestic Flights

Ogun State government confirmed that a major international company will begin two weekly cargo flights from London to the Gateway International Airport.

The airport has also been designated as the alternate airport to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, giving it a strategic edge for both domestic and international aviation.

Passenger flights will soon commence, with initial direct routes to Abuja and Port Harcourt.

Economic and Strategic Impact

In a statement, the Ogun State government said:

“This landmark achievement firmly places Ogun State on the global map, unlocking new opportunities for trade, investment, and tourism. With world-class infrastructure, international connectivity, and a strategic location, we are confident that the Gateway International Airport will redefine air travel standards in Nigeria and stand as a proud symbol of our vision for a greater Ogun State.”

Broader Implications

The approval is seen as a game-changer for Ogun State’s economy, boosting logistics, creating jobs, and attracting foreign investment. It is also expected to ease congestion at Lagos airports while positioning Ogun as a vital aviation hub.

FG Orders Withdrawal of Criminal Case Against Ibom Air Passenger, Reduces KWAM 1’s Flight Ban

Published

on

Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has announced the withdrawal of criminal complaints and reduction of sanctions in two recent high-profile aviation misconduct cases, citing compassion and lessons learned for all parties.

In a statement on Wednesday, 13 August 2025, Keyamo said the government’s review followed consultations with key aviation stakeholders, including the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

“Though regrettable, we think valuable lessons have been learnt by all sides to these incidents and airport security protocol, especially, have been well highlighted for the travelling public,” Keyamo said.

“If nothing at all, the episodes have undoubtedly helped to raise public awareness about appropriate conduct within the aviation sector.”

Ibom Air Passenger Ban Lifted

One of the resolved cases involved Ms. Comfort Emmanson, accused of unruly behaviour on an Ibom Air flight on Sunday, 10 August 2025. Keyamo confirmed that after Emmanson showed “great remorse” during police questioning in the presence of her lawyer, Ibom Air agreed to withdraw its complaint.

“Subsequent to the withdrawal of the complaint by the complainant, the CP of Airport Command and the Police Prosecutor will immediately take the remaining steps to facilitate her release from Kirikiri Prisons within this week,” the minister said.

The Airline Operators of Nigeria also agreed to lift the lifetime flying ban imposed on Emmanson. Details of the resolution will be made public by AON.

KWAM 1 Sanction Reduced

The second case involved music icon Wasiu Ayinde Marshall (KWAM 1), who was earlier sanctioned for an airport security breach involving ValueJet. The NCAA will now reduce his flight ban to one month, while the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) will engage him as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol.

“Having publicly demonstrated penitence, the NCAA is also to withdraw its criminal complaints against KWAM 1 earlier lodged with the Police,” Keyamo confirmed.

In addition, ValueJet’s Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and First Officer Ivan Oloba, who faced suspensions, will have their licenses restored after serving a one-month ban and undergoing a mandatory professional re-appraisal.

Training and Reform for Aviation Security

Keyamo also ordered all relevant aviation agencies, in collaboration with other security agencies, to hold a retreat next week focused on retraining airport security personnel in handling unruly passengers and de-escalating conflicts. Airlines will also participate in sessions to address the conduct of their staff towards travellers.

“These above decisions were taken by Government and the airline operators purely on compassionate grounds,” Keyamo said, stressing that the clemency should not be mistaken for laxity on safety rules.

“We are also sending a clear message that we take safety and security in the aviation sector very seriously and we have decided to draw a line after these clemencies.”

Public Reaction

The announcement has sparked debates on social media, with some praising the compassionate approach while others caution against setting a precedent that could embolden unruly behaviour.

The minister emphasised that this resolution closes the chapter on both cases, but the government remains committed to strict enforcement of aviation laws going forward.
