So-Safe Corps Assures Ogun Residents of Tight Security Ahead of Eid al-Adha Celebrations

The Ogun State Community, Social Orientation and Safety Corps, popularly known as the So-Safe Corps, has assured residents of heightened security measures ahead of the Eid al-Adha celebrations in Ogun State.

The reassurance came in a statement issued by the State Commander, Soji Ganzallo, and signed by the Corps’ Director of Information and Public Relations, Adegunwa Adegbuyi.

The Corps said both uniformed and undercover operatives had been stationed across strategic locations and identified “black spots” to prevent criminal activity during the festive period.

Why It Matters

Eid al-Adha is one of the busiest festive periods in Nigeria, with increased travel, crowded public spaces, religious gatherings, and commercial activity.

Security agencies often increase surveillance during the celebrations due to concerns over theft, traffic accidents, and public safety risks associated with large crowds.

For many residents and travellers, the assurance from the So-Safe Corps is expected to boost public confidence during the holiday.

So-Safe Corps Issues Safety Advisory

Speaking in the statement, Dr Ganzallo urged residents — especially Muslim faithful — to celebrate responsibly and remain security conscious throughout the festivities.

“People should be alert, observant and careful in crowded areas as some individuals in the crowd have ulterior motives,” he said.

He also advised residents travelling during the holiday to ensure their homes are securely locked before leaving and encouraged neighbours to maintain peaceful relationships, describing neighbours as “the first responders in times of assistance.”

The Corps further appealed to motorists to adopt defensive driving practices during the holiday period.

According to the statement, drivers were advised to avoid speeding, overloading, and late-night travel while ensuring that their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on journeys.

Security Presence Across Ogun State

The So-Safe Corps said operatives had already been mobilised to major public areas across the state to prevent security breaches.

“Both uniform and plain-clothes operatives are on strict instruction to ensure hitch-free celebration,” Ganzallo stated.

The agency did not specify the exact number of officers deployed but said surveillance operations would continue throughout the festive period.

Public Safety and Festive Travel Concerns

Road safety experts and security analysts have repeatedly warned about the risks associated with festive travel in Nigeria, particularly during major religious holidays when highways experience increased traffic volume.

Public concern over road accidents, petty theft, and crowd-related incidents often rises during Eid celebrations, especially in densely populated urban centres.

Security observers say visible deployments by local security agencies can help deter criminal activity and improve emergency response times.

What’s Next?

The Eid al-Adha celebrations are expected to attract large gatherings across mosques, markets, motor parks, and recreational centres in Ogun State and other parts of Nigeria.

Residents are expected to continue preparations for travel, religious observances, and family celebrations in the coming days.

The So-Safe Corps says its officers will remain on active patrol throughout the holiday period.

Customs, Police Strengthen Strategic Communication Partnership to Boost Public Trust

Published

Nigeria Customs spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada welcomes Police Force spokesperson Anietie Okokon during an inter-agency meeting in Abuja.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have renewed their commitment to closer collaboration in strategic communication, public engagement and information sharing as both agencies seek to improve public confidence and strengthen national security efforts.

The renewed partnership was reaffirmed during a courtesy visit by the Force Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Anietie Okokon, to the National Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Abdullahi Maiwada, at the Service Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, on Monday.

The meeting formed part of CSP Okokon’s familiarisation tour after assuming office and focused on strengthening cooperation between the communication departments of both agencies.

Why it matters

Security experts have long argued that effective communication between government agencies is essential for tackling misinformation, improving crisis response and building public trust.

For Nigerians, stronger collaboration between the Customs Service and Police could help deliver clearer public information, improve awareness of security operations and encourage greater confidence in law enforcement institutions.

The meeting also came as 70 officers and personnel from the Nigeria Customs Service Public Relations Unit were inducted into the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), highlighting the agency’s growing investment in professional and ethical public communication.

Customs: Communication builds stronger institutions

Speaking during the visit, the National Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, Deputy Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada, welcomed the engagement and praised the Police for promoting stronger partnerships among public communication professionals.

“The NCS values its longstanding relationship with the NPF. Today’s engagement presents another opportunity to strengthen professional collaboration between our Public Relations Units and collectively contribute towards building stronger institutions through effective communication and stakeholder engagement,” Maiwada said.

He said both organisations share responsibility for shaping public perception, strengthening stakeholder confidence and supporting government policies through effective communication.

Police: Partnership essential for national security

Earlier, Force Public Relations Officer CSP Anietie Okokon said the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to strengthening relationships with other government agencies, particularly in areas that improve public trust and institutional performance.

He said strategic communication has become increasingly important in modern governance and security management.

“This visit is aimed at further strengthening the cordial relationship between the NPF and the NCS, while enhancing collaboration in strategic communication, public engagement, and information sharing. As institutions serving the Nigerian people, we must continue to work together to promote professionalism, transparency, and effective communication in support of our national security objectives.”

Expert perspective

Public relations and governance specialists say coordinated communication among security agencies can reduce conflicting public messages during emergencies, improve accountability and help citizens better understand government policies and security operations.

They also note that professionally trained public relations officers play an increasingly important role in combating misinformation, especially on digital platforms where false information spreads rapidly.

Public perspective

Many Nigerians have consistently called for greater cooperation among security agencies, not only in operations but also in communicating accurate and timely information.

Analysts believe unified messaging can reduce confusion, improve public confidence and encourage stronger cooperation between citizens and law enforcement agencies.

What’s next?

The renewed engagement is expected to pave the way for more joint communication initiatives, professional exchanges and coordinated public awareness campaigns between the Nigeria Customs Service and the Nigeria Police Force.

Observers say continued collaboration could strengthen institutional transparency while supporting broader national security objectives.

Police Service Commission Releases Names of 50,000 Successful Police Constable Recruits

Published

on

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has released the names of successful applicants recruited into the Nigeria Police Force as Police Constables, marking the completion of one of the country’s largest police recruitment exercises aimed at strengthening national security.

Candidates who participated in the recently concluded written examination have been advised to check their recruitment status on the official recruitment portal from 12:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2026.

The commission said successful applicants would also receive email and SMS notifications using the contact details they provided during registration.

Why it matters

Nigeria has continued to grapple with insecurity ranging from banditry and kidnapping to violent crimes in several regions.

The recruitment of 50,000 new police constables is expected to increase manpower within the Nigeria Police Force and improve policing across the country, although security analysts have consistently argued that recruitment must be matched with better training, equipment, welfare and accountability.

The PSC said the recruitment followed “a comprehensive, inclusive, equitable and transparent recruitment exercise” conducted alongside the Nigeria Police Force, the Federal Character Commission, the Ministry of Police Affairs, State Career and Counselling Departments and the Police Community Relations Committee.

What successful candidates should do

According to the commission, successful candidates will later be informed of the dates and venues for reporting to designated Police Training Institutions for medical examinations and documentation.

The PSC warned that candidates who fail to report within the stipulated period would be deemed to have declined the offer.

It also stated that applicants who fail the medical screening conducted by the Police Medical Team upon resumption at training institutions would be declared medically unfit and asked to leave the programme.

Candidates are expected to report with their training call-up slip, National Identification Number (NIN) slip, Bank Verification Number (BVN) slip, original certificates, photocopies of credentials and other documents listed on the recruitment portal.

Commission commends President Tinubu

PSC Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Hashimu Salihu Argungu, thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the recruitment exercise.

He said the approval formed part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.

Argungu also urged successful candidates to approach the opportunity with patriotism and professionalism.

He said: “See this opportunity as a clarion call to serve the nation with dignity, integrity and unwavering commitment to a safe and secured Nigeria.”

Expert perspective

Security experts have repeatedly maintained that increasing police personnel is only one aspect of improving public safety.

They argue that sustained investment in modern policing technology, intelligence gathering, community policing, continuous training and officers’ welfare will determine whether expanded recruitment translates into better security outcomes for citizens.

Public perspective

For many young Nigerians, the recruitment exercise represents an opportunity for stable employment at a time of high youth unemployment.

Communities affected by insecurity are also likely to expect improved police visibility and quicker emergency response as newly recruited officers are deployed after completing their training.

What’s next?

The recruitment portal will become accessible from July 16, 2026, allowing applicants to confirm their status.

Successful candidates will then proceed to documentation, medical examinations and subsequent training before eventual deployment into the Nigeria Police Force.

POWA President Supports Police Families with Business Grants During Surprise Abuja Barracks Visits

Published

POWA President Olufunmilola Disu speaking with women traders during a surprise welfare visit to a police barracks market in Abuja.

The National President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Disu, has provided business grants, food items and starter packs to women traders and widows during unannounced visits to police barracks markets in Abuja.

The two-day outreach took place at Area C Police Barracks in Nyanya and the 44 Police Mobile Force (PMF) Barracks in Kuje ahead of the 2026 POWA National Convention scheduled for 16–18 July.

Instead of notifying residents in advance, Mrs. Disu walked through the markets, speaking directly with traders, widows and spouses of serving police officers to better understand the financial pressures affecting their businesses.

She observed that many shops had limited stock, with several women explaining that rising costs and limited capital had made it difficult to keep their businesses running.

After listening to their concerns, the POWA President immediately distributed cash support, business grants, food items and starter packs to selected beneficiaries to help them rebuild their businesses.

Why it matters

Police officers often work in demanding and high-risk environments, while many of their families depend on small businesses to supplement household income.

For widows of officers who died in active service, access to financial support can be critical in maintaining family livelihoods, paying school fees and sustaining small enterprises.

The intervention also highlights growing efforts by welfare organisations to complement government support through targeted economic empowerment programmes.

POWA explains the outreach

Mrs. Disu said the visits were deliberately unscheduled to allow her to witness the realities facing police families without prior preparations.

“I wanted to meet our women in their everyday environment, listen to them, and see their challenges for myself. It is only when we understand their realities that we can provide support that truly meets their needs.”

She said the intervention forms part of the POWA CARES Initiative, which promotes healthcare, welfare and economic empowerment for police families in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

According to her, the outreach also reflects the goals of the upcoming POWA National Convention, themed “The Resilient Woman: Navigating Life’s Challenges with Strength, Purpose and Grace.”

She said the convention will focus on healthcare and mental wellness, economic empowerment and strengthening support systems for police families nationwide.

Beneficiaries welcome the support

One of the beneficiaries, Abigail John, said she never expected the POWA President to visit her shop personally.

“She came to my shop, saw the challenges I was facing and decided to support my business. I am truly grateful for her kindness.”

Rebecca Atahiru, a widow who has raised her children alone since losing her husband in active service 15 years ago, described the intervention as a source of hope and encouragement.

Grace Ameh, an egg trader and wife of a police inspector, praised the initiative and encouraged more wives of serving officers to participate in POWA programmes.

Expert perspective

Social development experts say direct support for women-owned micro-businesses can help families cope with inflation and improve household resilience.

They note, however, that one-off grants are most effective when combined with access to affordable finance, business training and long-term mentoring to help beneficiaries sustain their businesses.

Industry and public perspective

Welfare advocates say organisations supporting security personnel increasingly recognise that the wellbeing of officers is closely linked to the economic stability of their families.

They argue that empowering spouses and supporting widows can strengthen morale within the police service while helping vulnerable households become more financially independent.

What’s next?

Attention now shifts to the 2026 POWA National Convention, where delegates are expected to discuss programmes aimed at improving healthcare, mental wellness, entrepreneurship and welfare support for police families across Nigeria.

The Abuja outreach signals that practical economic empowerment is likely to remain a central pillar of POWA’s activities beyond the convention.
