Five suspected cult members have been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command during an intelligence-led operation targeting criminal groups operating in the Apapa, Ijora and Badia areas of the state.

Police said the operation, carried out by officers of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), also led to the recovery of weapons, suspected hard drugs and items believed to be used for criminal activities.

Authorities added that investigations are continuing and efforts are underway to arrest other suspects before the case is taken to court.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, warned cult groups and other criminal elements operating in Lagos to abandon criminal activities or face prosecution.

He said:

“There is no hiding place for cultists in Lagos, as the Command remains resolute in identifying, arresting, and prosecuting every individual involved in cult-related violence and other criminal acts.”

The police commissioner also assured residents that intelligence-led operations would continue across the state.

He urged members of the public to continue sharing credible information with the police, adding that all reports would be treated confidentially.

The row over the controversial Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (FIPC) has intensified after African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze criticised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for dismissing calls for accountability over the matter.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arraigned an alleged drug baron, three Mexican nationals and six other suspects over the alleged operation of a large-scale methamphetamine production facility hidden inside a forest in Ogun State.

The 10 defendants appeared before the Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday, where they pleaded not guilty to an 11-count charge linked to the establishment of a clandestine laboratory and the alleged production of 2,419.48 kilograms of methamphetamine, which investigators estimate is worth more than N480 billion on the international illicit drug market.

The case is one of Nigeria’s largest reported methamphetamine prosecutions and highlights growing concerns that international drug trafficking networks are increasingly targeting the country as a production and export hub.

Who are the defendants?

Those arraigned include alleged kingpin Anochili Innocent, 63, alongside three Mexican nationals—Juan Carlos Meza Torrero, 49; Nemecio Martinez Felix, 46; and Jesus López Valles, 40.

The other Nigerian defendants are Nwankwo Sunday Christian, Egwuonwu Uchenna Victor, Igwe Abuchi Remijus, Ifeanyichukwu Chibuike Joshua, Omonughwa Kingsley Orike, and Nwobum Emeka.

According to NDLEA prosecutors, the suspects were arrested during coordinated operations in Ogun and Lagos states between 16 and 18 May 2026.

Investigators said seven suspects, including the three Mexican nationals, were arrested inside the laboratory hidden deep within a forest in Mowe, Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State.

NDLEA operatives also arrested Anochili at his residence in Lakowe, Lekki, Lagos, before carrying out follow-up raids on additional properties allegedly linked to the syndicate.

What prosecutors told the court

According to the charge sheet, prosecutors allege that the defendants conspired between February and 16 May 2026 to establish and operate an illegal methamphetamine laboratory.

They are also accused of managing and financing a drug trafficking organisation, transporting precursor chemicals used in methamphetamine production, and unlawfully producing and possessing the narcotic.

The prosecution said investigators recovered large quantities of industrial chemicals allegedly used in manufacturing the drug, including 358 kilograms of toluene, 1,834 kilograms of hydrochloric acid, 22.5 kilograms of acetone, as well as phenyl-2-propanone (P2P) and phenyl acetic acid.

One charge relates specifically to Anochili, who prosecutors allege permitted his property to be used for the illegal production of narcotics.

Court orders remand

All 10 defendants pleaded not guilty after the charges were read in court.

Although NDLEA prosecutors said the defence had received the case files on 3 July and were ready to begin trial, defence lawyers requested additional time to prepare.

Justice Musa Kakaki ordered that all defendants be remanded at the Lagos Correctional Centre.

The court adjourned the matter until 16 and 22 July for the commencement of trial and the hearing of bail applications.

“The presence of Mexican nationals among those arrested and arraigned today speaks to the alarming reach of international drug cartels now attempting to entrench themselves in Nigeria, but the Agency will not relent in tracking down and dismantling every such network, no matter how well concealed or well-financed.”
