Tinubu urges APC unity, defends economic reforms at Abuja convention
Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to remain united, warning that internal divisions could weaken the party and Nigeria’s democracy.
Speaking at the party’s 4th elective national convention in Abuja on Friday, the president also defended his government’s economic reforms, saying “the sacrifices of today are laying the foundation for Nigeria’s prosperity tomorrow.”
‘Unity is our greatest strength’
Addressing delegates at Eagle Square, Tinubu described the convention as “a defining chapter” for both the party and Nigeria’s democracy.
“Our greatest strength has never been in our size or numbers, but our unity,” he said.
“Political parties do not fail only through electoral defeats… they falter when ego overrides ideology or when ambition replaces discipline.”
He warned members to guard against internal conflicts and urged leaders and aspirants to prioritise collective interest over personal ambition.
Tribute to Buhari and party founders
The president paid tribute to the late Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as the party’s first elected president and a foundational figure.
He also honoured other deceased party members, calling on the APC to preserve the vision of its founders.
“All the departed members… did not build this party for division and selfishness,” he said.
Tinubu defends Electoral Act and opposition criticism
Tinubu rejected claims by opposition groups that the Electoral Act 2026 undermines democracy, describing such criticisms as a “disservice to the Nigerian people.”
“The Electoral Act reflects our collective quest as a nation to strengthen our electoral system,” he said, noting that it went through legislative scrutiny and public hearings.
He added that democracy requires a strong opposition but insisted criticism must be constructive.
“As a statesman… I believe in a credible opposition—one that can challenge, question and help refine policies.”
Economic reforms: ‘Difficult but necessary’
The president acknowledged that his administration’s reforms have been challenging but said they were essential for long-term growth.
“No nation rises by hiding from the truth. No economy grows by sustaining wasteful subsidies,” he said.
Tinubu highlighted progress in infrastructure, tax reforms, and social investment programmes.
He also pointed to improvements in economic indicators, including declining inflation, trade surpluses, and increased investor confidence.
Mixed reality: progress amid challenges
While outlining achievements, the president admitted that key challenges remain, particularly in the power sector.
He cited debts to electricity generation companies and ageing transmission infrastructure as ongoing issues.
To address this, he announced plans for a Grid Asset Management Company (GAMCO), expected to boost electricity supply by about 1,600 megawatts.
Why it matters
Tinubu’s speech comes at a time of economic pressure on Nigerians, with rising living costs and ongoing reforms shaping public debate.
His emphasis on unity within the APC signals efforts to stabilise the ruling party ahead of future elections.
For many Nigerians, the success or failure of these reforms will directly affect jobs, inflation, and overall living standards.
Youth and women: call for inclusion
The president also addressed young people and women, promising greater inclusion in governance and party leadership.
“You are not only the future of Nigeria. You are our hope,” he told young Nigerians.
He added that excluding women weakens political institutions, pledging more leadership opportunities for them.
Industry and public reactions
Political analysts say Tinubu’s focus on unity reflects concerns about internal tensions within the APC.
Some economists, however, argue that while macroeconomic indicators may be improving, many households are yet to feel the benefits.
Civil society groups have also called for clearer timelines on reforms, particularly in the power and social welfare sectors.
What’s next
The APC convention is expected to produce new party leaders and shape its strategy ahead of future elections.
Tinubu urged all participants to accept outcomes peacefully and work together.
“At the end of this convention, our party must be the victor,” he said.

Nigeria anti-corruption strategy: Media urged to shift from “prosecution-only” to prevention
Stakeholders at a national workshop in Abuja have called for a major shift in Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts, urging the media to move from “prosecution-only” reporting to a prevention-focused approach under the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS) 2022–2026.
The call formed part of a communiqué issued at the end of a one-day workshop on strengthening collaboration between anti-corruption agencies, civil society, and the media.
Why it matters
Corruption remains a major challenge in Nigeria, affecting governance, economic growth, and public trust.
Participants said tackling it requires more than arrests and prosecutions — it demands transparency, institutional reform, and stronger public awareness.
They warned that gaps between policy implementation and public perception continue to weaken anti-corruption efforts.
Key findings from the workshop
Participants highlighted several concerns:
Corruption cannot be defeated through prosecution alone but requires systemic reforms, ethical conduct, and transparency.
There is a “visibility gap” between anti-corruption policies and public understanding, driven by weak coordination and limited awareness.
The media is underutilised in the “prevention” pillar of the strategy, often focusing on sensational arrest stories instead of systemic issues.
Digital forensic tools and artificial intelligence are yet to be fully integrated into anti-corruption efforts.
Whistleblowers and investigative journalists lack adequate protection and incentives.
Media’s role in fighting corruption
The communiqué stressed that journalists must play a stronger role in preventing corruption.
“The media should commit to preventive advocacy with a view to shifting the narrative from ‘Prosecution-Only’ to ‘Prevention-First’ by highlighting successful institutional reforms and exposing vulnerabilities in public procurement processes before breaches occur.”
Participants also said journalists must:
Investigate fearlessly
Report responsibly
Educate citizens
Hold those in power accountable
Calls for stronger collaboration
The workshop recommended closer cooperation between anti-corruption agencies, journalists, and civil society.
It proposed the creation of dedicated “Media Desks” to provide real-time, non-classified data to journalists, promoting transparency and evidence-based reporting.
“Media are not just observers in the anti-corruption crusade but catalysts of reform, and should be provided with legal protection and incentives.”
Legal protection and reforms
Participants called for urgent legislative action to strengthen whistleblower protection laws.
They said this would help safeguard journalists’ sources and improve investigative reporting.
A tripartite monitoring committee involving government, media, and civil society was also proposed to track progress of the anti-corruption strategy through 2026.
Institutional backing and reactions
The workshop commended the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and other stakeholders for their role in advancing anti-corruption efforts.
However, participants urged the Federal Government to increase funding for anti-corruption agencies to avoid weakening their operations.
What’s next
Stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to the success of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy.
They emphasised that a stronger, more proactive media sector is essential to building a corruption-free society.

Ondo North petition: Critics challenge Olajide Ipinsagba’s record, expose rifts in APC
A petition challenging the performance of Olajide Ipinsagba has sparked fresh political tension in Ondo North, with critics insisting the lawmaker has failed to meet expectations despite claims by his supporters.
The controversy gained momentum after a Facebook post by Lai Yusuf dismissed the petition as “opportunistic” and politically motivated.
However, opponents argue the response avoids addressing key concerns raised about governance, transparency, and the true impact of projects attributed to the senator.
Why it matters
The dispute highlights widening cracks within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo North.
Political analysts say such internal disagreements often reflect deeper dissatisfaction among party members and constituents, especially when questions about performance and accountability emerge.
For residents, the issue goes beyond party politics, touching on delivery of public services, development, and representation.
Critics push back
While Yusuf defended the senator, critics say the petition represents genuine concerns from within the district.
Others argue that repeated references to scholarships, health interventions, and infrastructure projects are not enough without transparency on funding, scale, and accessibility.
Questions over performance claims
Supporters of Senator Ipinsagba have pointed to initiatives such as scholarships, health outreach programmes, and infrastructure projects.
But critics say many of these claims are difficult to independently verify and may not be evenly distributed across the district.
Residents in parts of the district also expressed mixed reactions, with some acknowledging projects while others said they have seen little direct benefit.
APC under pressure
The unfolding dispute is placing pressure on the APC leadership to respond carefully, as internal divisions could weaken the party ahead of future elections.
Analysts warn that dismissing dissent outright may deepen mistrust within party ranks.
What’s next
Attention is now turning to party leaders at both state and national levels, who may be forced to investigate the claims or mediate between factions.
The outcome could shape political alignments in Ondo North and influence candidate selection processes in the coming months.

Kekemeke Re-elected APC National Vice Chairman as Ajipe Praises Leadership
Barrister D.I. Kekemeke has been re-elected as National Vice Chairman at his party’s zonal convention, a move party leaders say reflects confidence in his leadership ahead of future political activities.
Chief Alexander Oluremi Ajipe, a senior party figure, described the decision as a “resounding show of trust” in Kekemeke’s ability to manage party affairs at both zonal and national levels.
Why it matters
The Re-election comes at a crucial time as political parties in Nigeria begin early positioning ahead of future elections.
Analysts say leadership stability within party structures often plays a key role in candidate selection, internal cohesion, and electoral success.
Ajipe: ‘A collective affirmation of leadership’
In a statement, Chief Ajipe said Kekemeke’s return to the role reflects his track record and strategic direction.
“This re-election is not just a personal triumph but a collective affirmation of Barr. Kekemeke’s unwavering commitment, strategic vision, and ability to unite stakeholders for the progress of our great party,” he said.
Ajipe, who is also Convener of the Ibi Giga socio-political group and a member of the Governing Council of the University of Ibadan, added that Kekemeke has consistently demonstrated leadership capacity.
Call for party unity
Ajipe urged party members to support the reappointed vice chairman, stressing the importance of unity.
“Barr. Kekemeke’s track record speaks volumes. He has consistently shown the capacity to navigate challenges and deliver results, making him the ideal steward for our party’s national affairs.”
Political observers say such endorsements from influential figures may help consolidate internal support within the party’s ranks.
Broader political context
Party conventions in Nigeria often serve as platforms for leadership consolidation and strategic alignment.
Experts note that zonal leadership positions, such as National Vice Chairman, play a critical role in mobilising grassroots support and coordinating regional interests within national party frameworks.
What’s next
Kekemeke is expected to focus on strengthening party unity across the zone and preparing structures for upcoming political contests.
Observers say his ability to manage internal dynamics and maintain cohesion will be closely watched in the months ahead.
