UCL: You should be fuming – Rio Ferdinand sympathisies with Liverpool star

Published

Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand has sympathized with Liverpool’s Joel Matip, insisting that the defender should be fuming at being dropped for the Reds’ Champions League semi-final first-leg 2-0 win over Villarreal on Wednesday night.

Recall that Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp opted to drop Matip for Ibrahima Konate, who paired Virgil van Dijk in defence, as an own goal from Pervis Estupinan and a strike from Sadio Mane gave the Reds the win over Villarreal.

Matip has started 27 matches in the Premier League this season, but Konate and Van Dijk have shared duties in Champions League.

“If I’m Joel Matip, I am fuming,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport before Liverpool vs Villarreal kick-off.

“He has been exceptional all season and we talk about being the best defenders on form in the league, he would be in there for a shout after Van Dijk.

“So yeah set-pieces must be a big thing for his team selection this evening.

“I think the most impressive thing for me is the way [Jurgen Klopp] has been able to utilise his squad.

“Just shuffling the back at any given time, and those players are coming in and impacting the team.

“They’re playing big roles in that, Konate is a good example for that, he has come in and scored goal after goal, and as a manager it’s a dream scenario at the business end of the season.”

He added: “It is a Champions League semi-final so of course you are going to play your best team, but I think Matip all season has been number one all season, but I think the goals that Konate has scored in the past few games, he does add something different.”

Chelsea have reportedly spent the highest amount of money on football agents in the last 12 months (between February 2023 to February 2024) in the Premier League.

Chelsea have always been known to be heavy spenders in the transfer market but since American businessman, Todd Boehly and his consortium became the owners of the club two years ago, their expenditures on new players have increased dramatically.

In the last two years, Todd Boehly and his consortium have spent over £1 billion just in recruiting new players who have not been able to give the team the expected success.

Within 12 months, the Stamford Bridge-based club have spent a whooping £75.1 million just to pay agency fees in the process of buying new players.

Chelsea accounts for over 18 percent of the total amount of agency fees (£409.5 million) Premier League clubs paid to agents in the last 12 months.

They paid about £15 million more than Manchester City who spent £60.6 million on agency fees in the same period.

Manchester United (£34 million), Liverpool (£31.5m), Arsenal (£24.7m), Aston Villa (£21.1m), Tottenham (£19.7m), and Newcastle United (£18.8m), complete the top 8 of Premier League clubs who have spent the most on agents in the last 12 months.

Luton Town (£2m) spent the least money on agents in the Premier League in the last 12 months, way less than relegated Leeds United (£13.2m), Leicester City (£8.1m) and Southampton (£7.5m).
