The Anambra State Government has condemned the assault of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member by operatives of Operation Udo Ga-Achi in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area. The incident, which occurred on July 25, 2025, sparked outrage after a disturbing video of the attack surfaced online.
Speaking on behalf of the government, the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, said those responsible had already been arrested and suspended pending investigation.
“We have collaborated with the Police to ensure a thorough investigation and complete dispensation of justice. The victim’s medical needs have been attended to, and we have committed to providing all other necessary support,” Mefor stated.
Assurance to Corps Members and Public
The government urged NYSC members serving in Anambra not to panic or lose confidence in the state’s security structures.
“Anambra remains one of the country’s most hospitable and secure states. Corps members have nothing to fear in collaborating with Agunechemba and Operation Udo Ga-Achi in the prevention and fight against criminality,” Mefor said.
He stressed that the outfits, established under the Anambra Homeland Security Law 2025, were created to protect residents, not intimidate them.
Government Condemns Misconduct by Security Operatives
The Commissioner noted that the state’s security outfits had largely maintained peace and order since their launch in January 2025. However, he said any form of misconduct by members would not be tolerated.
“Any form of assault perpetrated by any member of the security outfits is outside their code of conduct, and all those involved in this incident will face the full weight of the law,” he said.
Wider Political Context: APGA By-Election Victory
The government’s reaction comes just days after the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) secured a sweeping victory in the state’s by-elections. Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s administration described the outcome as proof of public trust in his leadership.
Chief Press Secretary Christian Aburime said the results reflected voters’ appreciation of Soludo’s governance.
“When a ruling party wins by such overwhelming margins in a competitive democracy, it signals that voters are rewarding concrete achievements rather than empty campaign rhetoric,” Aburime said.
He added that the peaceful conduct of the elections, with strong collaboration between federal and state institutions, showcased Anambra’s growing democratic maturity.
Looking Ahead
While the assault incident has raised concerns among corps members and their families, the Anambra State Government insists measures are in place to protect youths deployed for national service.
Observers note that the dual narratives — the state’s swift reaction to the NYSC assault and APGA’s strong electoral showing — highlight both challenges and gains in Anambra’s governance.
