In a show of unity and strength, the All Progressives Congress (APC) gathered its top officials, ministers, senators, and supporters in Akure on Wednesday for the final campaign rally ahead of Saturday’s gubernatorial election in Ondo State.

The event at Democracy Park was led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alongside an array of political heavyweights who rallied to secure victory for Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa.

Vice President Shettima, addressing an enthusiastic crowd of supporters, emphasized the APC-led administration’s commitment to Ondo State’s development, pointing to recent achievements as evidence of President Tinubu’s dedication.

“Ondo has two senior ministers under President Tinubu’s administration and just last week, the President approved the establishment of a teaching hospital for the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA).

This is because of the love Mr. President has for Ondo State,” Shettima said, urging residents to support the APC and Governor Aiyedatiwa for continued progress in the state.

Aiyedatiwa Promises Transformation and Honors Late Predecessor

Governor Aiyedatiwa, who was formally presented with the APC flag by the National Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, took the stage with a heartfelt message. He reflected on his journey from deputy to governor and paid tribute to his late predecessor.

“I remember when our late governor chose me as his deputy; he believed in me. While he intended for me to succeed him, he never wished for it to be in his absence. Now, I’m here to fulfill that vision, and I pledge to sustain his legacies and do more for the people of Ondo State,” he said.

Governor Aiyedatiwa promised an ambitious plan for Ondo, highlighting his vision for economic growth, food security, infrastructure improvement, and enhanced state security.

“You haven’t seen anything yet. With your support, we will achieve even greater things together. I urge every one of you to vote for APC on Saturday for a stronger, more prosperous Ondo State,” he declared.

Party Leaders Rally Support Across Ondo Communities

APC leaders, including National Vice Chairman (South West) Hon. Isaac Kekemeke and State Chairman Engr. Ade Adetimehin, echoed Aiyedatiwa’s call for continued APC leadership, encouraging party supporters to spread the message of progress across communities in Ondo.

Minister of Interior Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo expressed confidence in the party’s success across all local government areas, declaring: “We don’t want to leave any local government out. We are here to secure victory across board for the APC. It will be 18-0 on Saturday.”

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, Chair of the APC National Campaign Council for Ondo, urged supporters to maintain peace on election day while securing victory.

APC National Chairman Abdullahi Umar Ganduje reinforced the party’s commitment to a sweeping win, handing the APC flag to Governor Aiyedatiwa and his running mate, Dr. Olayide Adelami, as a sign of unity and determination.

Support from Traditional Rulers and Party Leaders

In a gesture of respect, the APC leaders, led by the Vice President, visited the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, where they expressed gratitude for the support of the traditional institutions.

Governor Aiyedatiwa acknowledged the backing of local leaders, noting their role in encouraging voter turnout for the APC.

Notable figures in attendance included Governors Abiodun Oyebanji of Ekiti, Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, Hope Uzodimma of Imo, and AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara.

Minister of Youth Development Ayo Olawande, Minister of Blue Economy Adegboyega Oyetola, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, and former Governor of Edo State, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, were also present, showing a unified APC front for the Ondo election.

With a packed lineup of party leaders and supporters behind him, Governor Aiyedatiwa is primed for a highly anticipated race, and the APC aims to make an emphatic statement with a strong electoral win in all 18 local government areas.

Governor Aiyedatiwa walking with residents during fitness exercise in Akure

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has led a large-scale health and fitness walk in Akure, aimed at promoting physical wellbeing among residents.

The event, which drew thousands of participants, began at the Government House and ended at the Akure Township Stadium.

Why it matters

The walk comes amid growing concern over lifestyle-related health issues in Nigeria, with public officials increasingly promoting exercise as a preventive measure.

Governor Aiyedatiwa said the initiative was designed to encourage regular physical activity and improve overall wellbeing.

He also used the platform to address political developments, hinting at a possible return for some former aides recently disengaged from his administration.

‘Loyalty will not be ignored’

Speaking to participants, the governor praised the turnout and the diversity of groups involved, including civil servants, artisans, and security agencies.

He highlighted the importance of exercise not only for physical health but also for mental and spiritual balance.

Addressing former aides present at the walk, he said:

“You remained committed even after leaving office. That loyalty will not be ignored. Previously, we had about 650 aides, but the plan now is to appoint 1,000. Many of you will still have roles to play.”

The remark signals a potential expansion of political appointments as part of ongoing restructuring within the state government. Large turnout at Akure fitness walk ending at township stadium

Public turnout and political undertones

The fitness walk was organised by a group led by Kehinde Akinrotoye, a former Senior Special Assistant on Sports.

Officials say the large turnout reflects public support for the administration.

The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Segun Omoyofunmi, said the participation showed confidence in the governor’s leadership.

Health message meets governance

Governor Aiyedatiwa also urged residents to combine physical exercise with spiritual practices, including prayer and fasting.

He expressed optimism that the new month would bring “good health, renewed strength and prosperity” to the people.

What’s next

The governor’s comments on reappointments are likely to raise expectations among former aides and political observers.

Analysts say the planned increase in appointments could have implications for governance costs and political consolidation in Ondo State.

Kwankwaso’s Defection to ADC ‘Bad Omen’ for Tinubu’s 2027 Bid – Eze

Rabiu Kwankwaso joins ADC in Kano surrounded by party leaders

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has said the defection of former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso to the party signals trouble for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.

Mr Eze described the move as a “bad omen” for Mr Tinubu’s re-election ambitions, arguing that it strengthens an emerging opposition coalition.

He said Kwankwaso’s entry into the ADC reflects growing dissatisfaction with the current administration’s performance.

“By joining the ADC, Kwankwaso has dealt a heavy political uppercut blow to President Tinubu’s re-election bid,” Eze said.

Kwankwaso, a former presidential candidate and leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), formally joined the ADC in Kano on Monday.

Why It Matters

The defection comes at a time when Nigeria is grappling with economic challenges, including inflation and rising cost of living.

Eze argued that opposition leaders are positioning themselves to capitalise on public discontent.

“The country is bleeding… the only way to oust Tinubu and his unpopular government is through a coalition movement,” he said.

Political analysts say coalition-building could play a decisive role in the 2027 elections, especially if opposition parties unite behind a single candidate.

A Growing Opposition Coalition

Eze praised Kwankwaso for joining what he described as a “credible and strategic” political platform.

He noted that the ADC now includes prominent figures such as:

Atiku Abubakar

Peter Obi

Rotimi Amaechi

Aminu Tambuwal

Nasir El-Rufai

“Kwankwaso has further placed Tinubu on Aso Rock’s exit corridor,” he added.

He also described the former Kano governor as a “political tsunami waiting to blow off Tinubu.”

Event in Kano

Kwankwaso received his ADC membership card at Gidan Kwankwasiyya in Kano, in the presence of senior party leaders.

Among those present were:

David Mark

Rauf Aregbesola

Dino Melaye

John Odigie-Oyegun

Emeka Ihedioha

The gathering signals a broader effort to consolidate opposition forces ahead of the next election cycle.

What’s Next

Eze warned that defeating an incumbent government would require more than symbolic moves.

“Voting out an incumbent in Nigeria is not by firing one silver bullet… we must unite ahead of our primaries,” he said.

He urged ADC members to avoid internal divisions and focus on presenting a united front against the ruling party.

Political observers say the coming months will test whether the coalition can maintain cohesion and translate momentum into electoral strength.

Industry & Public Perspective

Some analysts believe Kwankwaso’s grassroots appeal could boost ADC’s chances, particularly in northern Nigeria.

However, others caution that Nigeria’s political history shows alliances often fracture before elections.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has yet to formally respond to the development.

Ondo Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa Sacks Aides, Plans 1,000 New Appointments Across Wards

Published

on

The Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has dismissed all political aides with immediate effect, in what officials describe as a move to improve governance and service delivery.

Those affected include Senior Special Assistants and Special Assistants.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, said the governor appreciated their contributions to the state.

“The Governor thanked them for their contributions to the development of the State thus far and wished them well in their future endeavours.”

Plan to appoint 1,000 new aides

The government also announced plans to appoint about 1,000 new aides drawn from all 203 wards across the state’s 18 local government areas.

Officials say the move is aimed at strengthening coordination and expanding grassroots representation.

The appointments are expected to be rolled out in phases.

Why it matters

The decision signals a significant restructuring within the state’s political system, potentially affecting governance, political loyalty, and service delivery.

By appointing aides from every ward, the administration may be seeking to deepen political inclusion and improve communication between government and local communities.

However, such large-scale appointments could also raise questions about public spending and the efficiency of governance structures.

Industry and public reactions

Political analysts say the move reflects a broader trend among Nigerian state governments to recalibrate administrative structures mid-tenure.

Some observers argue that bringing in new aides could inject fresh ideas into governance.

Others, however, caution that frequent political reshuffles may disrupt continuity and policy implementation.

Residents and stakeholders are expected to watch closely how the appointments impact local governance and development projects.

What’s next

The Ondo State Government has not yet announced a timeline for the appointments.

Attention will now turn to the selection process, with expectations that it reflects fairness, competence, and political balance across the state.
