Dangote, Rabiu, Others Donate Billions at IBB’s Book Launch

The Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, was the venue for a gathering of Nigeria’s elite on Thursday as dignitaries assembled for the launch of A Journey in Service, the autobiography of former Military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB).
President Bola Tinubu served as the Special Guest of Honour at the event, which also doubled as a fundraising campaign for the IBB Presidential Library Project.
While many donors opted for anonymity regarding their contributions, Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, made a public commitment of N8 billion, structured as an annual payment of N2 billion over the four-year duration projected for the library’s completion.
He assured that if the construction exceeded this timeline, he would continue to donate N2 billion yearly until the project was finished.
Other notable contributions included:
Alhaji Abdul Samad Rabiu, Founder of BUA Group and the event’s Chief Launcher, pledged N5 billion.
Theophilus Danjuma, co-Chief Launcher and Founder of the TY Danjuma Foundation, donated N3 billion.
Speaking at the event, Dangote commended Babangida for his economic policies that empowered the private sector during his tenure.
“These reforms, among others, ensured that Nigeria now has more private-sector involvement than any other country in Africa,” he said.
He credited Babangida with implementing policies such as the abolition of import licences, which enabled local industries to thrive.
According to Dangote, this shift has led to the private sector contributing 85% of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), while the government accounts for only 15%.
“Your Excellency, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for all you have done for Nigeria. Many may not realise that you were the architect of the private sector in Nigeria.
“Anyone in the private sector who has achieved prominence today owes it to you, as you provided us with the necessary licences. In the past, we used to struggle to obtain licences through intermediaries, including Indians,” he said.
