Lagos State Warns Motorists Against Fake VINs, Concealed Number Plates

Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to motorists engaging in illegal practices involving fake Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) and concealed number plates.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, directed all private and commercial motorists involved in these violations to desist immediately.
He emphasized that these acts not only contravene the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018 but also pose serious security risks.
“The Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018, unequivocally mandates the proper display of Vehicle Identification Numbers on all automobiles traversing the state’s road network,” Hon. Giwa stated.
Government’s Stance on VIN and Number Plate Violations
Hon. Giwa reiterated that no legal provision allows motorists to use counterfeit VINs or obstructed number plates.
He warned that violators will face strict legal action.
He further emphasized the role of the Lagos State Vehicle Identification Database in tracking registered vehicles, aiding identification, and facilitating the recovery of stolen automobiles.
“Just as every individual bears a name beyond their choice, so too does every vehicle possess an assigned number plate, which must be displayed without obstruction,” he remarked.
Security Implications and Enforcement
The concealment of number plates hinders security agencies and traffic enforcement officers from tracking vehicles involved in crimes such as “One-Chance” robberies and other traffic offenses.
To curb these threats, Hon. Giwa issued a final warning to all offenders, urging them to remove any coverings from their number plates and stop using fake VINs. He stressed that failure to comply would lead to swift arrest and prosecution.
The Lagos State Government remains firm in enforcing traffic laws and safeguarding public security, ensuring compliance with the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.

Negligent Trailer Driver Injures LASTMA Officer in Ojodu Berger Crash

A Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officer has suffered life-altering injuries after a reckless trailer driver lost control at excessive speed, crashing into him at the Ojodu Berger area of Lagos.
The incident occurred while the officer was on his way to resume his afternoon duty.
Investigations reveal that the fully loaded trailer, with Bauchi State registration number KTG 33 ZZ, was moving from Agidingbi by Oba Ogunji Road towards Omole Junction in the Ogba area when the driver, speeding dangerously, lost control.
Tragic Consequences of Speeding
The impact of the crash resulted in severe trauma, leaving the LASTMA officer with multiple fractures on his right leg and hand. Upon emergency evaluation at the Surgical Emergency Centre of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), medical specialists determined that the extent of the injuries necessitated the amputation of his right leg.
In a desperate bid to escape justice, the truck driver fled the scene.
However, a swift response by officers from Ojodu Police Station, in collaboration with LASTMA personnel, led to his immediate arrest.
LASTMA General Manager Condemns Recklessness
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, visited the injured officer at LASUTH and strongly condemned the reckless behavior of the driver.
He stated:
“LASTMA officers are not adversaries to motorists; rather, they are dedicated to ensuring that traffic flows seamlessly, thereby fostering economic growth and urban efficiency in Lagos State.”
He further emphasized that such a tragedy could have been avoided if the driver had followed basic road safety rules.
Mr. Bakare-Oki urged trailer and truck operators and all motorists to adopt a safety-first approach to driving, highlighting the priceless value of human life.
Commitment to Road Safety
As LASTMA intensifies efforts to enforce traffic regulations, Mr. Bakare-Oki reaffirmed the agency’s dedication to ensuring safe and orderly roads in Lagos.
He also extended heartfelt sympathy to the injured officer and wished him a swift recovery.
This tragic incident once again underscores the dangers of reckless driving and the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent avoidable accidents on Lagos roads.
