The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s tourism and hospitality industry through the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR), with a clear pledge to balance empathy, fairness, and the rule of law in carrying out its regulatory mandate.
The announcement came during the Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy’s retreat in Abuja, where Honourable Minister Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa emphasised that NIHOTOUR’s mission is not only about enforcing standards but also about building trust with industry stakeholders.
“Tourism is about people. Our work must reflect compassion and understanding. At the same time, empathy must never be mistaken for weakness. The law must be respected. Standards will be upheld firmly but always with fairness and a deep sense of responsibility to the industry and to our nation,” Musawa said.
NIHOTOUR’s Role in Industry Transformation
The Minister explained that while NIHOTOUR has the legal authority to regulate, certify, and enforce standards, its approach will remain people-centred, ensuring operators, students, and small businesses feel supported.
Adding his voice, NIHOTOUR’s Director General, Aare Dr Abisoye Fagade, underscored the Institute’s dual responsibility to uphold the law while supporting industry growth.
“Our duty is to uphold the law, but also to walk with people on their journey of growth. Every student, every professional, every operator and every entrepreneur in this industry should feel that NIHOTOUR is not just a regulator but a partner in their success. We will enforce standards, yes, but we will do so with empathy so that nobody is left behind as we raise the bar for Nigeria’s hospitality and tourism,” Dr Fagade said.
The discussions at the retreat focused on harmonising policies, strengthening institutional performance, and accelerating professionalisation through NIHOTOUR’s Mission 100 agenda.
Minister Honoured with ITPN Fellowship
In a related development, Musawa was formally conferred with the Fellowship of the Institute for Tourism Professionals of Nigeria (ITPN), the highest recognition for leadership and excellence in the sector.
The award, which confers the designation Fellow of the Institute (FITPN), was presented during a courtesy visit led by ITPN National President, Chief Abiodun Odusanwo, who praised the Minister’s transformative vision.
“The Fellowship is reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to professional standards, institutional growth, and national development through tourism. The Honourable Minister’s vision for culture, tourism, and the creative economy has inspired renewed confidence in the sector,” Odusanwo said.
Accepting the honour, Musawa expressed gratitude and pledged to continue advancing professionalism, innovation, and youth empowerment within the industry.
“The Fellowship is a call to deeper responsibility. It strengthens my resolve to ensure Nigeria’s cultural wealth and tourism assets are harnessed strategically to create enduring value for communities, investors, and visitors alike,” she said.
Driving Growth Through Partnerships
Both the Ministry and ITPN agreed to collaborate on training, accreditation, and international best practices to strengthen the tourism workforce and boost Nigeria’s global competitiveness.
Established in 1987, NIHOTOUR remains Nigeria’s premier institution for training, certification, and regulatory oversight in tourism and hospitality. The Institute for Tourism Professionals of Nigeria (ITPN) continues to champion professional development through advocacy, training, and accreditation.
