Missing Osun Monarch Found in FBI Custody After 11 Months

Published

on

The Apetu of Ipetumodu, Oba Joseph Oloyede, who mysteriously vanished in March 2024, has been discovered in the custody of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

The traditional ruler, who also holds American citizenship, faces allegations of defrauding the U.S. government of $4.2 million and is currently battling a 13-count fraud indictment at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio.

His prolonged absence left the royal stool vacant for nearly a year, stirring unease among the people of Ipetumodu as he missed key traditional festivals, including the Odun Egungun and Odun Edi.

Fraud Allegations and FBI Investigation

According to FBI records, Oba Oloyede was arrested on May 4, 2024, following a warrant issued by the U.S. District Court.

Investigations revealed that he allegedly orchestrated a fraudulent scheme using six registered companies to obtain pandemic relief loans meant for struggling businesses.

Court documents state that he submitted falsified financial records to secure loans under the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program.

In June 2020, four of his companies—Available Tax Services, Available Tutors, Available Financial, and Available Transportation—each received over $100,000 in loans.

By October 2021, he had secured two additional loans of $500,000 each for JO&A and Available Transportation.

Further findings suggest that the monarch, an accountant by profession, also assisted co-conspirators in executing similar fraudulent schemes, charging them a percentage of the loan amount upon disbursement.

“Oloyede assisted co-conspirators and confederate borrowers who submitted and caused to be submitted PPP and EIDL loan applications containing false information,” the indictment reads.

Arrest and Detention

Unaware of his pending indictment, Oba Oloyede returned to the U.S., where he was immediately arrested upon arrival.

His legal proceedings continue at the U.S. District Court, with potential repercussions that could affect his status as a traditional ruler in Nigeria.

Oyo State has taken a significant step towards ensuring seamless implementation of its rural road construction projects by inaugurating the Grievance Redress Committee (GRC) under the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP).

The committee, established to address potential disputes, was launched in Oluyole Local Government Area.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Director-General of the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA), Dr. Debo Akande, emphasized the importance of following the committee’s terms of reference to facilitate smooth execution of the project.

“The meeting was geared towards engaging stakeholders on disclosure of sites, with a view to getting citizens’ buy-in for maintenance of rural roads,” Dr. Akande stated.

He further highlighted that the GRC will play a key role in fostering co-existence between contractors and beneficiary communities, as required by RAAMP. Dr. Akande urged stakeholders to ensure a hitch-free exercise during and after the construction process.

He also commended Governor Seyi Makinde for his commitment to transforming the state’s rural landscape into a thriving agro-driven economy.

Committee’s Role in Conflict Resolution

While inaugurating the Grievance Redress Committee, the Oyo State Project Coordinator for RAAMP, Engr. Adeola Ekundayo, explained that the committee’s primary responsibility is to address grievances from affected communities, particularly farmers whose lands might be impacted by construction.

“The Committee’s primary responsibility is to address grievances from affected communities, particularly farmers whose lands might be impacted by construction, amongst other responsibilities, to enhance hitch-free civil works,” Engr. Ekundayo stated.

He stressed the need for fair handling of all complaints and urged contractors to hire indigent workers from the communities to boost the local economy.

The GRC comprises youth representatives, women, and community leaders across all Phase 1 roads spanning approximately 68km across Oyo State.

The committee will also be responsible for educating communities on construction processes and rights-of-way to prevent misunderstandings.

Government’s Commitment to Security and Development

In his welcome address, the Chairman of Oluyole Local Government, Engr. Akeem Olatunji, assured that maximum security would be provided during and after the construction.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the development of the council and appreciated Governor Seyi Makinde for prioritizing food security and supporting RAAMP’s rural road construction projects across the state.

“I thank the present administration in the state, under the leadership of Engr. Seyi Makinde, for prioritizing food security by supporting RAAMP to strive for the level of construction in the state, which Oluyole Local Government is one of the beneficiaries,” Engr. Olatunji stated.

The Grievance Redress Committee is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring effective communication, transparency, and community engagement as Oyo State progresses with its RAAMP rural road projects.
