Nigeria Customs Renovates Lagos School, Commissions Sports Arena to Boost Education and Fitness

Published

on

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has renovated Methodist Primary School in Ibeshe, Ikorodu, and commissioned the Wale Adeniyi Sports Arena at its Western Marine Command in Lagos.

The projects were unveiled on Wednesday, 11 February 2026, as part of what Customs describes as its corporate social responsibility (CSR) drive.

Why it matters

Public primary schools in many parts of Nigeria face overcrowding, aging facilities and limited access to basic infrastructure.

By upgrading classrooms and recreational spaces, Customs says it is contributing to education quality and healthy living, two areas closely linked to long-term social and economic development.

Commissioning the school project, Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC) Adewale Adeniyi said the intervention aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“This is the kind of impact we want to make through our CSR. This is very gratifying not just to the Comptroller General of Customs, all members of management, but also to the members of the community that we are serving”, he said.

The renovation covered more than 15 classroom blocks.

New facilities include 15 solar-powered security lights, computer rooms, a school library, toilets for teachers and pupils, a clinic, a food vendor area, a multipurpose hall and a playground.

Education advocates say infrastructure improvements can increase school attendance and teacher morale, especially in semi-urban communities like Ikorodu.

Voices from the community

Former Customs Area Controller of Lilypond Export Command, Comptroller Ajibola Odusanya (Rtd), and the current Controller, Comptroller Samuel Ariyibi, described education as a driver of social progress.

They also urged the school to create a maintenance unit to preserve the facilities.

The school’s Headmistress, Felicia Oyatoye, said the upgrade would transform learning conditions.

She expressed gratitude to Customs and noted that the project would significantly improve both teaching and learning.

Traditional rulers of the Ibeshe Kingdom, government officials and community leaders attended the event.

A local parent who attended the ceremony told NigeriaUpdates that the renovation “gives our children a better chance,” adding that improved facilities could attract more pupils to the public school system.

Promoting healthy lifestyles

On the same day, the CGC also commissioned the Wale Adeniyi Sports Arena at the Western Marine Command.

He described the facility as an investment in fitness and mental well-being.

“When we provide this kind of facility, we also have stakeholders and members of the community that we serve in mind. Because of the nature of our job, we really need to keep fit all the time. Our jobs are demanding, and we must maintain the right balance”, the CGC said.

He urged officers across commands to use the arena.

“It is built to be used and utilised. I encourage officers and men, even those serving in other commands, to embrace the use of the facilities so that we can all remain physically and mentally fit”, he added.

The Customs Area Controller of the Western Marine Command, Comptroller Patrick Ntadi, stressed that the project’s sustainability depends on community partnership.

“As a command, we recognise that we cannot secure our environment alone. Community partnership is essential. This facility belongs to the community, and we trust that it will be protected, properly utilised and maintained”, Ntadi said.

What’s next?

Customs says it plans to continue expanding its CSR footprint across commands nationwide.

ANSEC approves N1.7bn flood-control works, N443m fire-safety upgrade for Anambra schools

Published

on

The Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC) has approved N1.77bn for a new discharge channel linking Ikenga, Isuofia and Igboukwu, aimed at reducing long-standing flooding and erosion challenges affecting homes, businesses and transport routes in the area.

The decision, taken at ANSEC’s 23rd meeting in Awka, also includes N443.4m for the supply and installation of fire-fighting equipment at the College of Nursing Science, Umueze-Isuofia — a move authorities say will strengthen safety in one of the state’s key training institutions for healthcare workers.

Both approvals signal the Soludo administration’s continued prioritisation of infrastructure, education and public safety.

Flood channel approved to curb erosion

Announcing the council’s decisions, the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, said the N1.77bn channel will help redirect stormwater that has repeatedly damaged roads and threatened communities.

He explained that additional projects were cleared, including:

A 32kVA solar power system for Country Club at Solution Fun City, Awka.

A Park & Pay garage at Ekwulobia, with office building, solar-powered gazebo and perimeter fencing.

Extension of electricity to Iyiora Anam and Zion Ministry Psychiatric and Elderly Hospital in Aguleri.

New traffic light systems at Igwe Orizu Junction and at Nnewi Roundabout, both with pedestrian crossings.

Rehabilitation of damaged sections of St. Thomas Aquinas Road, GRA Awka.

Mefor said these projects were “priority interventions” designed to improve mobility, safety and community access.

Education sector gets N443.4m fire-safety upgrade

At the same meeting, ANSEC approved N443,408,923.03 for fire-fighting equipment at the College of Nursing Science, Umueze-Isuofia.

Mefor said the investment aligns with Governor Soludo’s broader push to modernise the education sector.

He noted that ANSEC also emphasised the importance of university autonomy in appointing vice-chancellors, while formally welcoming the new Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof Ugochukwu Anyaehie.

Broader education reforms highlighted

The Soludo administration has launched several reforms across the state’s public schools, including:

Distribution of smart boards and tablets across 22 smart schools.

Rebuilding of Boys Secondary School, Uga.

Recruitment of 3,115 additional teachers, raising the total to 8,115.

Upgrading laboratories in over 60 secondary schools with STEM equipment.

Increasing operational budgets for primary and secondary schools.

Restoring electricity to COOU Uli campus after 21 years, alongside free internet access.

Establishing a state-of-the-art trauma centre at COOU Teaching Hospital — the first state-owned facility of its kind in the South-East.

Officials say these reforms demonstrate the government’s intention to improve learning conditions and strengthen the state’s human capital.

Presidential commendation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently praised Governor Soludo during a visit to Anambra, describing him as “Mr Solution”.

“I hold him in high esteem,” President Tinubu said while commissioning new state infrastructure, including the recently completed government house — The Light House.

His comments are expected to boost political confidence in ongoing state development projects.

Industry reactions

Infrastructure experts say the discharge channel could deliver significant long-term savings by reducing erosion-related damage.

Public policy analysts also welcome the fire-safety upgrade at the nursing college, noting that many health institutions lack adequate emergency protection.

Parents’ groups in the state say they hope the investments will improve school safety and learning outcomes.

What’s next

The state government has not provided a timeline for completion of the newly approved projects, but officials say procurement processes will begin immediately.

Residents of the affected communities are urging the state to ensure transparent contracting and timely delivery.

She applauded the club’s unity and praised the planning committee for its exceptional organization, adding that collective achievement and shared responsibility remain the foundation of successful Lions service.

Onu also encouraged guests to contribute generously to support the club’s projects, describing the event as both a celebration and a call to greater service.

“Let us give, enjoy the moment, and continue to build together,” she said.

A Legacy of Service and Leadership Transition

She noted that Lions’ work extends beyond donations — it’s about restoring dignity and creating opportunities.

“A pair of glasses to a struggling student can restore hope and open doors to greatness,” Apata said.

She listed the club’s core service areas, including vision care, diabetes screening, cancer support, youth training, and disaster relief.

According to her, ₦5,000 can support a child’s school supplies, ₦50,000 funds a neighborhood diabetes screening, and ₦800,000 restores sight through cataract surgery.

Dr Reginald Stanley emphasized that the ceremony is not just about new leadership but the continuation of a legacy of giving.

He shared a personal story of his 20-year Christmas charity for widows, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

“It’s not about money, it’s about the spirit. That little, as it is, goes an extra mile in supporting those who are less privileged,” he said.
