..Reaffirms Commitment to Aviation Sector Growth.

The Nigeria Customs Service Technical and Hangar Services Limited (NCT&HSL) held its maiden Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Tuesday, 18 February 2025, in Abuja.

The event brought together key stakeholders from the aviation, customs, and public sector logistics industries to discuss operational development and the expansion of Nigeria Customs aviation services.

Key Stakeholders and Discussions

Senior officers from the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), representatives from the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), and other industry stakeholders attended the AGM.

Discussions focused on strengthening air surveillance capabilities, modernising customs operations, and securing further investments to enhance efficiency.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, commended the company’s progress since the board’s inauguration last year.

“It is evident that the company has made significant strides in this short period, surpassing its achievements in the preceding year. The company’s future prospects are even more important to us,” he said.

Strengthening Investments and Financial Prudence

Reflecting on his recent visit to the hangar, Adeniyi expressed confidence in the company’s investments:

“On my way back from Ilorin yesterday, I made a quick visit to the hangar and saw how busy it was. This underscored that we are investing in the right direction.”

He further revealed the Ministry of Finance’s interest in increasing investments in the company.

“As the majority shareholder, our expectation is that the company will continue to grow as a profit-yielding entity, providing value to our stakeholders and shareholders,” he stated.

The Comptroller-General assured the company’s management of its autonomy while emphasising the need for transparency.

“I assure the board and management that the Nigeria Customs Service will treat the company as an independent entity with its own autonomy. However, I must emphasise that transparency and accountability are essential,” he asserted.

Modernising Customs Operations

The Managing Director of NCT&HSL, Capt. Kuhi Mbaya, highlighted the company’s role in enhancing customs operations, aligning with broader efforts to establish specialised subsidiaries for improved efficiency and revenue generation.

He stressed the importance of balancing workforce competence with financial prudence.

“We are strategically employing qualified and competent staff while keeping a watchful eye on our salary overheads so that we do not overextend our financial capabilities. We have also made significant strides in legal compliance.”

Mbaya also detailed the company’s cost-saving approach in equipment maintenance.

“Some of our maintenance equipment are very expensive, and much of it is only used occasionally. Rather than spending tens of thousands of dollars on such equipment when financial prudence is crucial, we are exploring cost-effective alternatives such as leasing or collaborating with other organisations to share resources,” he explained.

He reaffirmed the company’s dedication to operational excellence and financial sustainability.

“We continue to seek innovative ways to optimise our expenditure while maintaining the highest safety and compliance standards,” he concluded.

Strategic Planning for Future Growth

At the closing session, the board appointed new auditors and reappointed directors. The AGM set the stage for long-term plans, including upgrading aircraft maintenance facilities, improving ground handling services, and expanding the NCS fleet to enhance customs enforcement operations.

With a clear roadmap for expansion and operational efficiency, NCT&HSL remains committed to strengthening Nigeria Customs aviation services for national security and economic growth.

Published

on

In a bid to enhance maritime surveillance and optimize revenue generation, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has granted its Shipping Development Department’s Surveillance Unit single-user access to the Windward tool within the C4i intelligence system.

This strategic move extends the C4i facility, originally focused on maritime safety and security, into shipping development and revenue optimization.

By leveraging advanced intelligence tools, NIMASA aims to enhance surveillance, prevent revenue leakages, and improve operational efficiency in the maritime sector.

The agency’s management, led by Dr. Dayo Mobereola, reaffirmed its commitment to improving internal processes for optimal performance across all operational areas.

The C4i Centre, which stands for Command, Control, Communication, Computer, and Intelligence, is a core component of the Deep Blue Project.

It plays a vital role in intelligence gathering and data-driven security operations, contributing significantly to Nigeria’s zero piracy record over the past 24 months.

With this integration, NIMASA expects greater regulatory compliance, improved maritime security, and enhanced economic efficiency within Nigeria’s waters.

Western Marine Command Seizes Record 1,958kg of Cannabis Sativa on Lagos Waterway

Published

The Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intensified its crackdown on illicit drug smuggling along the nation’s waterways, leading to a record-breaking seizure of 1,958kg of cannabis sativa.

The interception took place on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at approximately 11:00 PM inside the sea, under the strategic leadership of Comptroller PK Bamisaiye. This marks the largest single cannabis seizure made by the Command.

Massive Haul Following Credible Intelligence

This latest operation follows a previous seizure two months ago, where the Command intercepted 538kg of cannabis sativa packed into 1,021 loaves with a duty-paid value of N107.2 million.

According to Comptroller Bamisaiye,

“Our Officers, having received credible intelligence, were patrolling close to Ilase sea beach, at about 200 nautical miles from the Lagos anchorage when they sighted the smugglers.”

Despite attempts to escape, the smugglers abandoned their boat and jumped into the sea. Upon securing the vessel, customs officers discovered a staggering 3,793 loaves of cannabis sativa contained in 53 sacks, weighing a total of 1,958kg and valued at N398,265,000.

Continued Commitment to Anti-Smuggling Efforts

The Customs Area Controller commended the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC) and the management team for their unwavering support in providing the resources needed to combat smuggling operations.

Bamisaiye emphasized that,

“In line with the established procedures, the hard drugs will be handed over to the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). In addition, we shall continue to partner with other sister agencies in ensuring that our nation’s borders are well protected.”

Customs Sends a Strong Warning to Smugglers

The Western Marine Command reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards smuggling, warning perpetrators to desist or face the full wrath of the law.

Bamisaiye affirmed,

“This seizure is consistent with the Command’s resolve as earlier stated to sustain its anti-smuggling drive and operations. The Command reiterates its commitment to making our waterway axis a no-safe haven for smugglers, thereby creating a secure and thriving environment free from all illicit goods.”

With ongoing surveillance, intelligence-sharing, and inter-agency collaboration, the Command is determined to maintain its momentum in the fight against drug trafficking and illicit trade.
