NPF Calls for Suspension of Osun LG Elections Over Security Threats, Legal Issues

Published

on

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has urged the Osun State Government to immediately suspend the planned Local Government elections, citing credible intelligence reports that indicate a high risk of violence and disruption.

According to the NPF, security assessments have revealed that various political groups and interest parties are mobilizing to instigate unrest, which could threaten public peace and undermine democratic processes.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the NPF stated:

“Given this imminent threat to security, the NPF strongly advises the Osun State Government to suspend the planned elections forthwith in the interest of public safety and national stability.”

Volatile Security Conditions and Legal Complexities

The police force noted that proceeding with the elections under the current volatile conditions could escalate into widespread unrest, endangering lives and property.

While security agencies are prepared to maintain order, the NPF emphasized that preventing violence is the best course of action.

Additionally, the force referenced a recent Court of Appeal judgment delivered on February 22, 2025, which has nullified an earlier decision by the Federal High Court regarding local government administration in Osun State.

The police further stated:

“Beyond the security concerns, it is also imperative to consider the legal clarification by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice on the extant judicial pronouncements concerning Local Government administration in Osun State with regards to the Court of Appeal judgment delivered on the 22nd of February 2025 which stands to have nullified the Federal High Court’s previous decision and reinforces the position that the elections, as presently contemplated, lack a firm legal foundation.”

NPF Reaffirms Commitment to Peace and Democratic Processes

Given the dual concerns of security threats and legal uncertainties, the police have urged the Osun State Government to reconsider and suspend the elections to prevent unnecessary confrontations and ensure the safety of residents.

“The NPF reiterates its unwavering commitment to maintaining peace, protecting lives and property, and ensuring that Nigeria’s democratic processes are upheld in accordance with the law.

We urge all stakeholders, including political parties, to act with restraint and prioritize the well-being of citizens during this period,” the statement concluded.

The Nigeria Police Force assured the public that it remains vigilant and ready to respond to any threats while calling for cooperation from all political actors and stakeholders.
