Global peace advocate Steve Killelea has met with the Conflict Research Network West Africa to strengthen peacebuilding strategies in Nigeria and across West Africa.

The meeting, held in Abuja, brought together leading experts and policymakers to explore practical ways to prevent conflict and promote stability.

Participants included representatives from the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), as well as regional researchers and peacebuilding practitioners.

Why It Matters

Nigeria continues to face security challenges ranging from communal clashes to insurgency.

Experts say improving how peace is measured and understood especially at the community level could help policymakers respond more effectively.

The meeting focused on combining global peace frameworks with local realities, ensuring that interventions reflect the lived experiences of people in conflict-affected areas.

Bridging Global Ideas with Local Realities

Speaking during the session, CORN West Africa Associate Director, Obinna Chukwuezie, highlighted a key gap in peacebuilding efforts.

“While global peace frameworks provide structure for understanding conflict trends, gaps remain in capturing local perspectives.”

He added that combining localised data with compelling narratives can influence behaviour and shape public discourse.

Economic Value of Peace

Mr Killelea stressed that peace is not just a social goal but an economic necessity.

“Countries that strengthen the institutions and attitudes that sustain peace are better positioned for long-term growth and stability.”

His organisation, IEP, is globally known for its work on the Global Peace Index and Positive Peace frameworks.

Data, Innovation and Community Action

Professor Ukiwo Ukoha pointed to the importance of the NPAID initiative, a CORN-led project tracking patterns of violence and resilience.

“Tracking peace efforts across government, communities, security institutions, and civil society will help identify what works in preventing conflict.”

He said building evidence around successful interventions could help replicate effective strategies across regions.

Technology Driving Peace Insights

CORN’s Head of Programmes and Operations, Lara Raji, introduced the National Peace Web platform.

“The platform provides real-time insights that complement global indices and strengthen the overall evidence base for peacebuilding.”

The tool documents peace actions, actors, and grassroots mechanisms that sustain stability.

What’s Next

The engagement signals a growing push to connect research with real-world action.

Stakeholders say stronger collaboration between governments, civil society, and communities will be key to preventing conflict and sustaining peace.

Weapons recovered from suspected armed robbery suspects in Delta State

The Delta State Police Command has arrested four suspected armed robbers linked to a series of violent attacks on residents of Ughelli and surrounding communities, where victims were reportedly injured and robbed of motorcycles.

Police say the arrests followed coordinated intelligence-led operations carried out across Ughelli and Warri, with support from local vigilante groups.

Why it matters

The arrests come amid growing concerns over motorcycle theft and violent street crime in parts of Delta State.

Security operatives say the crackdown is part of ongoing efforts to disrupt organised criminal networks targeting commuters and residents.

How the suspects were arrested

According to the police, operatives of the CP Special Assignment (CP-SAT) team acted on credible intelligence between 6:30am and 9:10am on 20 April 2026.

The operation was conducted in collaboration with the Ughelli Kingdom Vigilantes and covered multiple locations within Ughelli metropolis.

Three suspects were first arrested during the operation:

Surajo Atar, 25, from Bigal Village in Gada LGA, Sokoto State

Abba Musa, 24, from Madara Village in Danbatta LGA, Kano State

Babangida Yusuf, 25, from Hamdullahi Village in Albasu LGA, Kano State

Police say a cutlass and a black mask were recovered from the suspects at the point of arrest.

Breakthrough in Warri

Following interrogation, the suspects reportedly led operatives to the Trailer Park area along Sapele Road in Warri.

There, police arrested a fourth suspect identified as Abdurasheed Shafiu, 31, who is alleged to be a receiver of stolen motorcycles.

Investigators say he confessed to buying stolen motorcycles from the robbery gang.

What police recovered

Items recovered from the suspects include:

One cutlass

One black mask

Items linked to stolen motorcycles (details under investigation)

Police response

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, said investigations are ongoing to track down other members of the syndicate and recover stolen property.

He assured residents that the command remains committed to safeguarding lives and property across the state.

“Investigation is ongoing with a view to arresting other members of the syndicate and recovering stolen properties belonging to victims,” the police statement noted.

He also urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information.

Expert and public safety perspective

Security analysts say intelligence-led policing and community collaboration remain critical in tackling armed robbery networks in Nigeria’s urban centres.

Residents in Ughelli have previously raised concerns over repeated attacks, especially targeting motorcycle riders and commuters.

What’s next

Police say follow-up operations are underway to dismantle the wider criminal network and recover additional stolen motorcycles believed to have been sold across different locations.

NCC officials meet Nigeria’s police chief in Abuja to discuss telecom infrastructure security

Nigeria’s telecom regulator and the police have stepped up efforts to protect critical infrastructure, following a high-level meeting in Abuja aimed at strengthening national security and digital resilience.

The Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Chief Idris Olorunnimbe, and its Executive Vice Chairman, Aminu Maida, paid a working visit to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, at the Force Headquarters.

The talks focused on protecting telecom infrastructure and implementing the Presidential Order on Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII).

Why this matters

Telecommunications networks underpin banking, security systems, and daily communication across Nigeria.

Frequent vandalism, theft of telecom equipment, and service disruptions have raised concerns about the country’s digital stability.

Strengthening collaboration between the NCC and police could help reduce outages, improve response times to attacks, and support Nigeria’s broader security architecture.

Focus on critical infrastructure

Both institutions discussed the ongoing enforcement of the CNII framework, which designates telecom assets as critical national infrastructure deserving enhanced protection.

Officials said improved coordination would help safeguard fibre cables, base stations, and other key installations often targeted by vandals.

Although no direct quotes were released, the meeting signals a policy shift towards tighter inter-agency cooperation.

Industry and public impact

For telecom operators, stronger security could mean fewer service disruptions and lower operational costs caused by repeated repairs.

Consumers may also benefit from more reliable connectivity, especially as Nigeria expands digital banking and online services.

Security analysts say aligning law enforcement with telecom regulators is essential in an era where cyber and physical infrastructure threats increasingly overlap.

Expert perspective

Industry observers note that infrastructure protection is not just a security issue but an economic one.

What’s next

The meeting is expected to lead to joint enforcement strategies, intelligence sharing, and possibly new operational frameworks between the police and telecom regulators.

Observers will be watching for concrete actions, including arrests of vandals, stricter penalties, and improved surveillance of telecom assets.

Oyo Police Commissioner engages Ibadan traditional leaders on community policing

The Oyo State Police Command has stepped up efforts to strengthen community policing through closer collaboration with traditional leaders and grassroots security networks in Ibadan.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, met with Mogajis (family heads), Baales, and members of the Ibadan Peace and Security Initiative to enhance intelligence-sharing and improve public safety.

The meeting, held on 18 April 2026, focused on building trust, improving response times, and integrating local knowledge into policing operations.

Why it matters

Security experts say modern policing increasingly depends on strong ties between law enforcement and local communities.

In many Nigerian cities, including Ibadan, informal intelligence from residents often plays a critical role in preventing crime.

The Ibadan Peace and Security Initiative was set up to support the Nigeria Police Force by providing “credible, timely, and actionable information,” according to stakeholders.

Traditional leaders back police collaboration

The delegation was led by Mogaji Asimiyu Ariori, President of all Mogajis in Ibadanland, alongside Mogaji Dr. Nurudeen Akinade and Baale F. D. Ige.

They praised the police for “swift response to distress calls” and ongoing cooperation with community structures.

They also stressed that effective policing relies heavily on local insight.

“The success of modern policing depends significantly on strong community partnership and accurate local intelligence.”

The group referenced remarks by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, who highlighted the importance of local knowledge in tackling security challenges.

Police commend grassroots efforts

Responding, CP Olugbenga welcomed the initiative and praised traditional institutions for their role in maintaining peace.

He said trust and collaboration remain central to effective policing.

“Effective policing thrives on trust, partnership, and timely intelligence sharing.”

The Commissioner also commended the Mogajis for fostering unity between communities and security agencies.

“Know Your DPO” initiative launched

A key outcome of the meeting was the introduction of a “Know Your DPO” programme.

Under the initiative, contact details of Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and Area Commanders were shared directly with community leaders.

Officials say this will:

Improve emergency response times

Strengthen communication channels

Enhance grassroots security coordination

Public safety and next steps

The police reiterated their commitment to safeguarding lives and property through proactive strategies and community engagement.

Residents were encouraged to report suspicious activities using official emergency lines.

Emergency contacts:

Toll-free: 615

Control Room: 08081768614, 07055495413

Industry & Public Perspective

Security analysts say such partnerships could help bridge the trust gap between citizens and law enforcement.

Community-driven intelligence models have been linked to improved crime detection in urban centres across Nigeria.

However, experts warn that success will depend on sustained engagement and accountability on both sides.
