Wayans Family to be Inducted into NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame

The NAACP has announced that the iconic Wayans family will be inducted into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame during the 56th NAACP Image Awards, which will air live from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium on Sunday, February 23, 2025.

The Pre-show begins at 18:00 WAT, followed by the Main Awards at 19:00 WAT on BET Africa (DStv Channel 129 & GOtv Channel 21).

The Hall of Fame Award recognizes individuals and groups who have pioneered their respective industries and left a lasting impact on entertainment and culture.

Previous inductees include New Edition, Eddie Murphy, Oprah Winfrey, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Spike Lee, and Earth, Wind & Fire.

NAACP President Praises the Wayans Legacy

Derrick Johnson, NAACP President and CEO, celebrated the family’s contribution, stating:

“For decades, the Wayans family has been at the forefront of comedy, breaking barriers and opening doors for waves of entertainers. Their trailblazing work in television, film, and stand-up has transcended pop culture and cemented their legacy in the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame.

A Comedy Dynasty Spanning Generations

The Wayans family has reshaped comedy through film, television, and stand-up for decades. Leading the charge, Keenen Ivory Wayans created the legendary sketch comedy show In Living Color, which launched the careers of Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Lopez, and several Wayans family members.

Keenen also co-wrote and starred in Hollywood Shuffle, directed Scary Movie, and wrote, directed, and starred in I’m Gonna Git You Sucka.

His fearless storytelling and industry-defying approach paved the way for Black creators in Hollywood.

Marlon Wayans has recently expanded into drama, earning a nomination for Outstanding Guest Performance for his role in Bel-Air. He is also set to star in Jordan Peele’s upcoming film, HIM (Monkeypaw Productions), premiering September 19, 2025.

Meanwhile, Keenen, Marlon, and Shawn Wayans are set to reboot the Scary Movie franchise, with a theatrical release planned for June 12, 2026.

NAACP Image Awards 2025: A Celebration of Black Excellence

Beyond honoring the Wayans family, the 56th NAACP Image Awards continues to recognize trailblazers in Black entertainment, music, and culture.

Among this year’s top nominees is Ayo Edebiri, who leads African representation with five nominations. Other notable nominees include Tems, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Davido, Tyla, Trevor Noah, Cynthia Erivo, and Lupita Nyong’o.

Fans can vote for select award categories at www.naacpimageawards.net. The winners will be revealed during the live telecast on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 8:00 PM ET/PT on BET and CBS.

The event will be extended by 30 minutes, running for a total of 2.5 hours. Additional awards will be presented online on February 18 and 19 at YouTube.com/naacpimageawards and at the 56th NAACP Image Awards Creative Honors on February 21.

Portable Arraigned in Court Over Alleged Assault on Ogun Officials

Controversial Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola Olalomi, popularly known as Portable, has been arraigned at the Isabo High Court in Abeokuta, Ogun State over an alleged assault on government officials.

NigeriaUpdates reports that Portable, who surrendered himself to the police in Lagos on Wednesday, was handed over to the Ogun State Police Command and presented in court on Thursday to face charges.

In a photo circulating online, Portable was seen wearing a mask on his head, accompanied by security operatives.

Portable was declared wanted after allegedly engaging in a violent altercation with officials from the Ogun State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.

The incident reportedly occurred when the singer confronted three town planning officials—TPL Onabanjo Abidemi, TPL Raymond Lateef, and TPL Ridwan Oyero Akinlesi—who were conducting an enforcement exercise in Oke-Osa, Tigbo Ilu Ota, Ogun State

Portable Now in Custody Over Alleged Assault – Ogun Police Command

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that popular Nigerian musician, Habeeb Okikiola, widely known as Portable, is now in its custody.

According to the spokesperson for the Ogun Police Command, CSP Omolola Odutola, Portable is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta.

“Portable, who had earlier surrendered to the police in Lagos, arrived at the SCID at exactly 13:23 hours today, February 19, 2025,” Odutola stated.

Background of the Incident

The Ogun State Police Command had previously declared Portable wanted over his alleged involvement in a violent attack on government officials carrying out their lawful duties on February 5, 2025.

Reports indicate that Portable led a group of young men to assault officials from the Ogun State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development during an enforcement operation near his business premises.

Police Statement on the Attack

“The enforcement officers sustained various bodily injuries but managed to escape and reported the incident to the Ota Area Command, which subsequently escalated the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further action,” the police said.

While nine of his accomplices were arrested, Portable managed to evade capture, prompting the Ogun State Police Command to obtain a valid court order declaring him wanted.

Police Assures Public of Due Process

The Command has assured the public that all legal procedures will be followed in handling the case, with necessary updates provided as investigations progress.

“We urge members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information.

The Ogun State Police Command remains committed to upholding justice and maintaining public order,” Odutola added.
