The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) is under pressure to take regulatory action against the popular reality show Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) following a formal petition by human rights lawyer and activist Maduabuchi Idam, who has accused the programme of promoting “obscene, indecent, and profane” content.
In the petition, dated August 5, and titled “Urgent need to ban or regulate the content of the television programme described as ‘Big Brother Naija’ for obscene, indecent, and profane content, pursuant to the NBC Act 1999”, Idam demanded that the commission either bans the show outright or enforces stringent regulations within 30 days. Failure to comply, he warned, will result in legal action.
“The show is not only aired on national TV but its profane content is proudly shared on the verified social media handles of the host company, in total disregard for public morality,” Maduabuchi Idam, Activist Lawyer
‘Double Standards’ Alleged Against NBC
Idam questioned NBC’s inconsistency in enforcement, pointing out that the commission had previously banned or sanctioned music videos by popular Nigerian artists such as Olamide, Phyno, and Wizkid on similar moral grounds.
He argued that it was hypocritical for the NBC to remain silent while BBNaija, currently in its 10th season, continues to broadcast scenes he described as “real-time explicit and pornographic” on both television and social media platforms.
While the reality show is rated 18+, Idam contended that the rating was inadequate, as the programme is still widely accessible to underage viewers, especially through platforms like Instagram and TikTok where explicit clips are circulated.
No Educational or Artistic Value, Lawyer Says
The lawyer dismissed the argument that BBNaija has any entertainment or cultural value, asserting that the programme “contributes nothing of educational, artistic, scientific, or literary relevance” to society.
“The NBC must act now to prevent further erosion of our societal values,” Maduabuchi Idam
He warned that Nigeria, already grappling with insecurity, corruption, and social vices, cannot afford the additional damage caused by what he described as the moral rot promoted by BBNaija.
Call for Tighter Controls and Digital Restrictions
Idam further called on the NBC to restrict BBNaija’s airing to highly regulated adult channels and to prohibit the show’s producers from sharing explicit scenes online.
“The NBC is empowered by the NBC Act to protect the moral fabric of our society. If it could sanction music videos, it can certainly regulate BBNaija,” Idam stated
As of the time of this report, the NBC has not issued any public response to the petition.
Public Reactions Mixed
The petition has sparked widespread debate across Nigerian social media, with some citizens supporting the call for tighter regulation, while others defended BBNaija as a platform for self-expression, youth empowerment, and entertainment.
Context and Legal Background
The NBC Act of 1999 empowers the commission to regulate and sanction media content deemed unfit for public consumption. However, critics argue that enforcement has often been selective and politically influenced.
The ongoing BBNaija season, produced by Multichoice Nigeria, continues to attract millions of viewers across Africa. The show has been a recurring subject of public morality debates in Nigeria since its inception in 2006.
