Nestlé Nigeria Takes Bold Step Toward Eco-Friendly Packaging with Clear Cap Rollout

Published

on

In a strategic move to support sustainable packaging and enhance recyclability, Nestlé Nigeria has unveiled new clear caps across its full Nestlé Pure Life bottled water range, reinforcing its long-standing commitment to environmental responsibility.

The initiative, which began with the launch of the 33cl Pure Life bottles, now extends to all other bottle sizes, excluding Nestlé Pure Life Protect. By eliminating the traditional blue-colored caps, the company is making its packaging more recyclable—paving the way for more efficient sorting and repurposing by recycling partners.

The decision aligns with Nestlé’s global goal of ensuring 100 percent of its packaging is either recyclable or reusable by 2025. Locally, this marks another important milestone in Nestlé Nigeria’s bid to create a sustainable hydration experience for Nigerian consumers.

“At Nestlé Pure Life, caring for our consumers and for the planet in every possible way has always been at the heart of what we do,” said Olutayo Olatunji, Business Executive Officer, Nestlé Waters.

“We remain passionate about delivering safe, quality water, we’re equally committed to protecting our planet. The clear cap isn’t just a design update; it is a reflection of our deeper commitment to sustainability. From being the first and the only water brand to introduce 50% rPET in our bottles, which cuts virgin plastic use by half, to now eliminating colored bottle caps, every step we take is intentional, aimed at creating a 360-hydration experience that prioritizes both people and the planet.”

A Shift Beyond Design

Beyond design aesthetics, the clear caps are part of a broader shift toward eco-conscious production—emphasizing functionality with environmental impact. The transparent cap allows recyclers to more easily identify and sort the material, significantly reducing plastic waste and enhancing the efficiency of Nigeria’s recycling system.

“At Nestlé, sustainability is not a buzzword; it is a responsibility,” said Victoria Uwadoka, Corporate Communications, Public Affairs and Sustainability Lead at Nestlé Nigeria.

“Introducing the clear cap represents a meaningful shift in how we design with purpose. Across our brand categories, we are thinking beyond function to impact—creating packaging that works for consumers, supports our recycling partners, and protects the planet.”

Leading by Innovation in Nigeria’s Packaging Landscape

Nestlé Nigeria has been at the forefront of packaging innovation. With its earlier move to incorporate 50% recycled PET (rPET) in its water bottles, the brand had already set a precedent in reducing the use of virgin plastics. The introduction of clear caps is another calculated decision to drive momentum in plastic circularity within Nigeria’s beverage sector.

As public discourse around plastic pollution intensifies globally, brands like Nestlé are setting benchmarks for corporate accountability and environmentally-friendly solutions.

Ondo Govt Approves N3.5bn for World Bank Rural Road Project, Moves to Map Flood-Prone Areas, Installs New Monarchs

Published

on

In a multifaceted push to enhance rural infrastructure and prepare communities against environmental disasters, the Ondo State Government has approved the release of ₦3.5 billion counterpart funding for the World Bank-assisted Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP). This announcement was made at the State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting held on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, and presided over by Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa.

The meeting also resulted in the approval of a statewide flood mapping initiative, targeted at identifying vulnerable zones and planning interventions in response to rising threats from climate-induced disasters. In addition, the Council confirmed the appointment of two traditional rulers in Ilaje and Akoko South West Local Government Areas.

Strategic Climate Action: Flood Mapping to Safeguard Lives

Addressing journalists after the EXCO session, Dr. Tob Loko, Commissioner for Environment, described the flood mapping initiative as a “preventive and data-driven approach” to protecting the state’s most vulnerable areas.

“We are not just identifying flood-prone zones; we are also investigating the underlying environmental and structural factors contributing to their vulnerability,” said Dr. Loko.

He acknowledged that even with comprehensive mapping, some areas may still face risks, and the government is already planning for contingencies:

“Perfection isn’t humanly possible. If any area is inadvertently missed during the mapping and later experiences flooding, we are considering emergency measures such as temporary relocation and distribution of relief materials.”

Dr. Loko also appealed to residents, particularly those in high-risk zones, to cooperate with government teams carrying out assessments and interventions.

Rural Roads, Real Impact: N3.5 Billion for RAAMP

In a significant infrastructural commitment, Engr. Abiola Olawoye, Commissioner for Infrastructure, Lands and Housing, revealed that the EXCO has approved ₦3.5 billion as the state’s contribution to the RAAMP. The project, jointly funded by the World Bank, is aimed at improving rural road networks and enhancing agricultural market access.

“This financial commitment underscores Governor Aiyedatiwa’s dedication to improving infrastructure and boosting agricultural productivity across rural communities in the state,” Olawoye said.

The commissioner added that engineers from the ministry have been tasked with inspecting roads in all 18 local government areas to identify those in urgent need of repair. The inspections will involve hydraulic designs and drainage evaluations to ensure roads are built to withstand flooding and erosion.

“We appeal to our people for patience as we focus on building durable infrastructure, not temporary fixes,” he added.

Royal Approvals: New Monarchs for Ilaje and Akoko

In another significant development, Alhaji Amidu Takuro, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, announced the official approval of two traditional rulers.

Prince Olusola Joseph Ajaka was confirmed as the pioneer Gbogunro of Idi-Ogba Alagbon in Ilaje Local Government Area.

Prince Isiaka Oseni was approved as the new Alale of Akungba-Akoko in Akoko South West Local Government Area.

Takuro emphasized that the appointments followed due process and traditional recommendations from relevant stakeholders before receiving final approval by the State Executive Council.

Governor Aiyedatiwa’s Vision for Development

Summarizing the council’s resolutions, Mr. Idowu Ajanaku, Commissioner for Information, described the decisions as “far-reaching” and reflective of Governor Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to infrastructure and inclusive development.

“The Aiyedatiwa-led administration remains focused on development, and more transformative projects will soon be rolled out. We urge the people of Ondo State to continue to support this government,” Ajanaku said.

Oyo SEMA Warns of Heavy Rainfall, Flood Risk in Ibadan and Nearby Communities

Published

on

The Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has issued a critical warning to residents across Ibadan and several nearby towns, urging them to prepare for intense rainfall and possible flooding expected throughout Tuesday, July 22, 2025.

In a press statement released in Ibadan, the state capital, the Administrative Secretary of SEMA, Mrs. Ojuolape Busari, said weather intelligence gathered through the Oyo State Flood Early Warning System (FEWS) indicates that eastern and northeastern parts of Ibadan are most at risk.

“According to the information made available by the Oyo state Flood Early Warning System, some parts of the north of Ibadan city, possibly parts of Egbeda LGA (eastern edges) and areas bordering Lagelu LGA, will experience heavy rainfall today,” Busari disclosed.

High-Risk Zones Identified

SEMA listed several flood-prone areas, including:

Lagelu Local Government Area – Iyana Offa, Moniya (eastern parts)

Egbeda LGA – especially communities along the Ibadan-Ife Road (A5 highway)

Ibadan Metropolis – IITA, Ibadan Airport, Ojoo, Akobo, Basorun, Gate, Challenge, and Ring Road

Akinyele LGA – central and eastern sections

Oluyole LGA – northeastern zones

“Communities along the Ibadan-Ife Road (A5 highway) eastward: Areas like Egbeda and further east on this major road, will also experience heavy rainfall,” Busari noted.

The report suggests that flooding could occur especially in low-lying and densely populated neighborhoods due to the saturation of the soil and inadequate drainage systems.

Authorities on High Alert

The agency stated that all emergency response teams, including civil society groups and volunteer agencies, are on standby to provide immediate relief where necessary.

“OYOSEMA and other relevant agencies of government, voluntary agencies, and civil society groups are prepared to intervene and ameliorate the plight of persons and communities who might be affected,” said Busari.

Precautionary Advice for Residents

Busari issued a strong appeal to the public to avoid travel through vulnerable routes and floodplains, especially near riverbanks and drainage channels.

“In simpler terms, if you are in or traveling through the eastern and northeastern parts of Ibadan today, particularly areas along the major roads heading east and north, you should expect significant rainfall, potentially leading to heavy downpours and associated impacts like localized flooding. The central parts of Ibadan will also see considerable rain,” she emphasized.

She further advised that residents take precautionary steps by clearing drainage channels, avoiding unnecessary outdoor activities, and staying updated via local radio and emergency information channels.

“Discretion is the better part of valour,” she said, urging residents to prioritize safety over convenience.

Official Endorsement from State Government

The press release was e-signed by Prince Dotun Oyelade, Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, lending official weight to the warning.

What You Can Do:

Check weather updates regularly.

Avoid driving or walking through flooded roads.

Move valuables to higher ground.

Help neighbours—especially the elderly—prepare.

Call local emergency numbers for assistance when needed.
