Ondo Insecurity: Aiyedatiwa Vows Crackdown After Deadly Attacks in Akure North Communities

Ondo Governor Aiyedatiwa during condolence

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has vowed to “flush out criminal elements” following a series of deadly attacks in communities in Akure North Local Government Area.

He made the pledge during a condolence visit to Imafon, Igushin and Ilado, where recent violence has left residents fearful and disrupted farming activities.

What happened

The governor described the killings as “deeply disturbing”, citing the murder of a female farmer and her daughter at a poultry farm, as well as the shooting of a young man who resisted abduction in Ilado.

“Such acts will not be tolerated,” he said, adding that protecting lives and property remains a priority despite nationwide security challenges.

Government response

Aiyedatiwa said security agencies including the police, military and civil defence are working with local hunters and vigilantes to secure forests and nearby communities.

He revealed that more than 100 suspected kidnappers had been arrested and charged to court.

“Operations are ongoing to flush out criminal elements hiding in forest enclaves,” he said.

The governor also announced plans to establish Amotekun security posts in affected communities to improve surveillance and response times.

Why it matters

The attacks highlight growing concerns about rural insecurity in Nigeria, where farming communities are increasingly targeted by kidnappers and armed groups.

Residents say the violence is affecting agricultural production, particularly poultry and cocoa farming, which are key sources of livelihood in the area.

Community concerns

Local leaders welcomed the governor’s visit but raised concerns about weak security infrastructure.

The Olumafon of Imafon, Oba Samuel Adegbehingbe Aliu, praised ongoing road construction but said vigilantes lack firearms, limiting their effectiveness.

He also criticised delayed responses from some security operatives.

Similarly, the Ojogbariaka of Ilado, Oba Kayode Ajomale, said a vast area spanning about 182 kilometres is served by only one police station.

“This is inadequate for the security needs of the communities,” he said.

Security agencies react

Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, described the attacks as “unfortunate” and said additional personnel had been deployed.

“We are familiar with the terrain and have conducted bush-combing operations,” he said, assuring residents of prompt response to credible intelligence.

Calls for local collaboration

Community youth leader Bankole Ojo called for greater support for hunters, citing their knowledge of the terrain.

He also alleged compromise among some security personnel and urged stronger collaboration with the Amotekun Corps.

Another community representative, Kenneth Olawale, stressed the urgency of restoring peace.

“These are agrarian communities. Security is essential for survival,” he said.

What’s next

Governor Aiyedatiwa urged residents to cooperate with security agencies and warned against harbouring criminals.

He also promised to accelerate ongoing road projects in the area before the rainy season, saying improved infrastructure could enhance security access.

Lagos Police Dismiss Cult Clash Rumours, Increase Security in Shitta, Itire Areas

Published

on

The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed reports of a planned cult-related clash in parts of the state, describing the alert as a “false alarm” while confirming increased security deployment in affected communities.

What happened

In a statement issued on Monday, police said messages circulating online had warned of a possible clash in areas including Shitta, Akerele, Itire/Aguda and Ishaga.

The Command said it acted swiftly after receiving initial reports, deploying officers and operational assets to the locations and surrounding communities.

Police response

The Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, ordered intensified patrols and increased visibility across identified flashpoints.

“The areas are well secured, and adequate security coverage has been emplaced to deter any unlawful gatherings or activities,” the police said.

Authorities stressed that the situation is under control and that there is “no cause for alarm”.

Why it matters

Rumours of cult violence in Lagos often trigger panic, disrupt businesses, and affect movement, especially in densely populated areas.

Security analysts say rapid police response and clear communication are critical in preventing misinformation from escalating into real unrest.

Public advisory

Residents have been urged to ignore unverified reports and rely on official communication channels.

Police also encouraged the public to report suspicious activities through emergency lines, including 07061019374 and 08065154338.

“Residents are encouraged to go about their lawful duties without fear or apprehension,” the statement added.

What’s next

The police say patrols and surveillance will remain heightened in the affected areas as a precaution.

They added that security agencies will continue to monitor developments and respond swiftly to any threats.

Delta State Police Commissioner assessing crime scene in Sapele

The Delta State Police Command has launched a coordinated rescue operation following the abduction of the Sapele Local Government Area chairman, with authorities pledging a swift and safe recovery.

The Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, visited Sapele to assess the situation and oversee ongoing efforts to locate the victim.

He inspected the Debro Fred Guest House, where the abduction reportedly took place, as well as Ogorode Waterside, where a vehicle linked to the incident was recovered.

“We are doing everything necessary” — Police

In a statement, police spokesperson Bright Edafe said the commissioner reassured the victim’s family and the public of ongoing efforts.

“The command is doing everything necessary to ensure his safe return,” he said.

The commissioner also visited injured victims receiving treatment in hospital, highlighting the violent nature of the attack.

Why it matters

The incident underscores growing concerns about kidnapping and violent crime in parts of southern Nigeria.

Local government chairmen play key roles in grassroots governance, and such attacks can disrupt public administration and weaken community confidence in security systems.

Residents in Sapele and across Delta State have been urged to remain vigilant and support security agencies with credible information.

Security response and next steps

Police say they are working “in synergy with other security agencies” and using intelligence-led operations to track down the perpetrators.

“Public support remains vital to the success of ongoing operations,” the statement added.

Authorities have not yet disclosed whether any arrests have been made.

Industry & Public Reactions

Security analysts say the incident reflects a broader need for improved intelligence gathering and community policing.

Local residents have expressed concern over safety, calling for increased patrols and stronger security presence in vulnerable areas.

What’s next

Investigations are ongoing, with police focusing on forensic analysis and intelligence gathering linked to the recovered vehicle.

IGP Olatunji Disu speaking at police leadership retreat in Abuja

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed a viral social media video alleging an ongoing terrorist attack in Abuja, describing it as “entirely false, misleading, and malicious.”

In a statement issued on Friday, the Force said no such incident occurred in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), urging the public to disregard the claims.

Police spokesperson Anthony Okon Placid said preliminary investigations showed the video was deliberately manipulated using unrelated footage sourced online.

“The video was deliberately curated using misleading footage… to construct a false narrative aimed at causing panic, inciting public fear, and undermining public confidence,” he said.

Suspect Arrested

The police confirmed the arrest of Pam Joseph, who is accused of creating and circulating the false content.

Authorities said the arrest followed “credible intelligence and digital forensic investigations” linking the suspect to the video’s origin and spread.

The suspect remains in custody and will be charged in court once investigations are complete.

Why It Matters

False security alerts can trigger panic, disrupt daily life, and strain emergency response systems.

In a city like Abuja, Nigeria’s political and administrative centre such misinformation can also affect public confidence and economic activity.

Security analysts warn that viral fake content, especially during periods of heightened insecurity, can worsen fear and misinformation among citizens.

Freedom of Expression vs Public Safety

The police reiterated that while Nigerians have the right to free expression, it does not extend to spreading harmful misinformation.

“Such rights do not extend to the deliberate spread of misinformation capable of threatening public peace and national security,” the statement added.

Authorities urged citizens to verify information before sharing, especially on social media platforms.

Growing Concern Over Digital Misinformation

The incident highlights the increasing role of digital platforms in spreading unverified security claims.

Experts say improved media literacy and stricter enforcement against fake news are essential to curb the trend.

What Happens Next

Police say they will continue monitoring online spaces and take “decisive action” against individuals spreading false or misleading information.

The case against the suspect is expected to proceed to court in the coming weeks.
