The Acting Customs Area Controller for Oyo/Osun, Deputy Comptroller Wale Adewole, visited two prominent traditional leaders on 12 March 2026 to enlist their support in the fight against smuggling.

The visits to the palaces of the Aseyin of Iseyin Land, Oba (Dr.) Sefiu Olawale Oyebola Adeyeri III, and the Soun of Ogbomosho, Oba Ghandi Olaoye, are part of a wider stakeholder engagement strategy aimed at mobilizing community cooperation in safeguarding Nigeria’s economy.

Why It Matters

Smuggling remains a major challenge for Nigeria’s economy, undermining revenue generation and distorting trade. Customs officials say engaging traditional institutions can help enforce regulations at the community level and raise public awareness about the economic impact of illicit trade.

“Traditional authorities play a crucial role in maintaining peace, security, and order within communities,” DC Adewole said. “We are committed to our mandates of revenue generation, suppression of smuggling, and facilitation of legitimate trade, and we need community leaders to help sensitize residents about the dangers of smuggling.”

Community Leaders Respond

Oba Adeyeri III of Iseyin praised the Customs Service for its efforts, assuring that his institution would support initiatives aimed at discouraging illegal trade and promoting lawful commerce.Customs delegation in conversation with Soun of Ogbomosho during courtesy visit.

Similarly, Oba Ghandi Olaoye of Ogbomosho described the visit as “timely and commendable,” pledging that his people would assist the Nigeria Customs Service in combatting smuggling and fostering legitimate trade.

“These engagements strengthen operational effectiveness and demonstrate the value of local partnerships in economic governance,” DC Adewole added.

What’s Next

The Oyo/Osun Area Command plans to expand such outreach, engaging more traditional authorities and community stakeholders to ensure the success of anti-smuggling campaigns and sustainable economic growth.

NCSP Urges Unity and Sacrifice During Eid al-Kabir as Nigeria-China Ties Deepen

Published

on

The Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership (NCSP) has called on Nigerians to embrace the values of sacrifice, unity, and collective progress during this year’s Eid al-Kabir celebrations, while reaffirming its commitment to strengthening economic and development cooperation between Nigeria and China.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the partnership office said the Islamic festival offers an important opportunity for reflection on the principles of faith, compassion, and shared responsibility at a time when Nigeria is seeking economic stability and stronger international partnerships.

The message comes amid growing trade, infrastructure, and investment cooperation between Nigeria and China, with both countries expanding collaboration across sectors including agriculture, technology, education, manufacturing, and energy.

NCSP links Eid values to economic development

The partnership office said the lessons of Eid al-Kabir remain relevant beyond religion, particularly as Nigeria faces economic pressures, unemployment challenges, and increasing demand for investment-driven growth.

“Eid teaches us that real progress is built on sacrifice, trust, and shared purpose,” the NCSP said.

“These are the same principles guiding our efforts to deepen cooperation with China for sustainable growth across critical sectors, including infrastructure, agriculture, technology, education, energy, manufacturing, and youth development,” the statement added.

According to the organisation, bilateral cooperation between both nations is creating opportunities for innovation, skills transfer, technical training, and long-term development.

Why Nigeria-China relations matter

Nigeria has increasingly turned to China as a major development and infrastructure partner over the last two decades, with Chinese-backed projects supporting rail transportation, road construction, energy development, and telecommunications.

Analysts say partnerships such as the NCSP reflect Nigeria’s broader strategy to attract foreign investment while building local capacity through technology transfer and vocational training.

Economic experts have also noted that youth-focused education and technical exchange programmes could play a critical role in addressing Nigeria’s unemployment and skills gap challenges if properly implemented.

The NCSP said it remains committed to initiatives aimed at empowering young Nigerians through educational exchange programmes and innovation-driven opportunities designed to improve competitiveness in the global economy.

Calls for peace and national unity

The organisation also urged Nigerians to use the Eid season to promote peaceful coexistence and national unity.

It stressed that sustainable economic and social progress can only thrive in an atmosphere of mutual respect and stability.

The partnership extended greetings to Muslim faithful across the country, expressing hope that the season would bring peace, prosperity, and renewed hope to families and communities.

Industry and public perspective

Development observers say Nigeria’s growing engagement with China continues to generate debate around infrastructure financing, debt sustainability, and long-term economic benefits.

While supporters argue Chinese partnerships have accelerated infrastructure delivery and industrial growth, critics have called for greater transparency, local participation, and accountability in bilateral agreements.

However, many business leaders believe sustained collaboration in manufacturing, technology, and education could support Nigeria’s diversification efforts beyond oil dependence.

What’s next?

The NCSP is expected to continue promoting bilateral initiatives focused on investment, youth development, industrialisation, and educational cooperation in the coming months.

Observers will also watch how Nigeria balances international partnerships with domestic reforms aimed at improving economic resilience and employment generation.

Ondo Adopts Federal Salary Scale for Health Workers, Installs Pioneer Oke-Oro Monarch

Published

on

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has announced the adoption of the federal salary scale for medical workers and promised fresh recruitment into the state health sector, as the government also moved to strengthen traditional institutions with the installation of a new monarch in Akoko North-West.

The governor made the announcements during separate official events held on Wednesday in Akure and Oke-Oro community, signalling what the administration described as a dual focus on healthcare reform, public service efficiency and community governance.

The move is expected to impact healthcare delivery, workers’ welfare and local administration across the state.

Ondo adopts federal salary scale for health workers

At an annual gathering for retired permanent secretaries and tutors-general in Akure, Governor Aiyedatiwa said Ondo State had approved the federal salary review for medical officers and health workers.

The decision places Ondo among the early states implementing the revised pay structure for health personnel amid growing concerns over brain drain and shortages in Nigeria’s healthcare system.

The Head of Service, Bayo Philip, confirmed that more health workers would soon be recruited.

He said: “The governor approved the federal salary review for medical officers and health workers, making Ondo State one of the early adopters of the scale.”

Philip also disclosed that about 5,000 new appointments had already been made into the civil service to strengthen public sector operations.

Why it matters

Health sector experts have repeatedly warned that poor pay and working conditions are pushing Nigerian doctors and healthcare workers abroad, worsening pressure on hospitals and primary healthcare centres.

Analysts say states adopting improved salary structures may have better chances of retaining skilled workers and attracting new professionals.

The governor also pledged continued investment in the civil service, saying retired administrators would remain valuable to governance.

“Retired senior civil servants remain invaluable assets whose administrative depth and practical understanding of governance must continue to be harnessed,” Aiyedatiwa said.

Governor promises stronger support for retirees

The governor said several retired permanent secretaries had already been appointed into political positions because of their institutional knowledge and experience.

He urged retirees to continue mentoring younger officers and promoting professionalism within the public service.

Chairman of the Forum of Ondo State Permanent Secretaries, Segun Odusanya, praised the administration for reforms aimed at improving institutional capacity.

Odusanya said gratuity payments had now been extended up to 2019 for state retirees and 2014 for local government pensioners.

He also commended the appointment of 34 permanent secretaries and the provision of official vehicles for 22 officers.

In separate goodwill messages, retired officials and traditional leaders described recent interventions as easing long-standing retirement concerns.

Ondo installs pioneer monarch of Oke-Oro

Earlier on Wednesday, Governor Aiyedatiwa presented the staff of office and instrument of appointment to Olanrewaju Olawoye Adeyemi as the pioneer traditional ruler of Oke-Oro in Akoko North-West Local Government Area.

The governor also announced the official renaming of the community from Oke Irun to Oke-Oro.

Describing the occasion as historic, Aiyedatiwa said the recognition fulfilled a long-standing request by the community to establish a recognised traditional institution.

He said the Ondo State Executive Council approved the Oke-Oro Chieftaincy Declaration on April 14, 2026, following what he described as a “painstaking scrutiny” of the request.

Security concerns and court controversy

The governor used the ceremony to restate his administration’s position on insecurity, saying the government had continued to strengthen the Amotekun Corps and other security agencies through improved logistics and funding.

He urged monarchs to work closely with security agencies through intelligence gathering to combat criminal activities.

Aiyedatiwa also addressed controversy surrounding the installation, insisting the exercise complied with an existing court order.

“If one court order says I should go ahead and another one is saying don’t go ahead, common sense will tell me what I ought to choose. And I have chosen this,” the governor said.

He argued that only the Court of Appeal could halt the process.

In his acceptance speech, Oba Adeyemi thanked the governor for approving the stool and described him as an “Omoluabi”.

The monarch later conferred on the governor the traditional title of Lisa Jigan of Oke-Oro.

Chairman of Akoko North-West Local Government Area, Esan Owolabi, described the installation as “the dawn of a new era” for the community.

Industry and public reactions

Labour and governance observers say the healthcare salary review could improve morale among workers at a time when many states are struggling to retain medical personnel.

Community leaders in Akoko North-West also described the formal recognition of Oke-Oro’s traditional institution as a step likely to strengthen local identity and conflict resolution structures.

What’s next?

The Ondo State Government is expected to begin additional recruitment of healthcare workers in the coming months as implementation of the new salary structure begins.

Attention is also likely to remain on the Oke-Oro monarchy following the legal controversy surrounding the installation.

Aiyedatiwa Urges Peace, Sacrifice and Unity in Eid-el-Adha Message to Ondo Muslims

Published

on

Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has extended Eid-el-Adha greetings to Muslims across Ondo State, urging residents to promote peace, religious harmony and generosity during the Islamic festival.

In a goodwill message released ahead of the celebration, the governor said Eid-el-Adha reflects the values of sacrifice, obedience and faith demonstrated by Prophet Ibrahim.

He encouraged Muslims to use the period to pray for the peace and development of both Ondo State and Nigeria.

“It is a season that calls us to embody the virtues of sacrifice, charity, tolerance, and love for one another, regardless of religion or background,” the governor said.

The governor also appealed to residents to support vulnerable members of society and celebrate responsibly during the festive period.

“I encourage everyone to celebrate in moderation, observe safety precautions, and uphold the peaceful disposition for which Ondo State is known,” he added.

Why Eid-el-Adha Matters

Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most important celebrations in Islam.

The festival commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah before receiving divine intervention.

Across Nigeria, Muslims traditionally mark the celebration with prayers, charity, family gatherings and the sharing of food with neighbours and the less privileged.

Religious leaders often use the occasion to promote peace, tolerance and national unity, particularly at a time when many Nigerians are facing economic pressures and security concerns.

Focus on Peace and Religious Harmony

Governor Aiyedatiwa said his administration remains committed to maintaining peaceful coexistence among religious and ethnic groups in the state.

Political analysts say such messages have become increasingly important in Nigeria’s multi-religious society, where leaders are expected to promote inclusion and social stability during major religious celebrations.

Community leaders in Ondo State have also repeatedly urged residents to avoid actions that could inflame tensions during festive periods.

Public Interest and Community Impact

The governor’s message comes as millions of Nigerians prepare for Sallah celebrations amid rising living costs and concerns over inflation.

For many families, Eid-el-Adha is not only a religious observance but also an opportunity for community support and humanitarian outreach.

Observers say appeals for moderation and generosity may resonate strongly with households struggling with higher food and transportation costs.

What’s Next?

Muslim faithful across Ondo State are expected to participate in Eid prayers, community gatherings and charitable activities during the holiday period.

Security agencies and local authorities are also expected to intensify safety and traffic management efforts around major prayer grounds and public spaces.

Governor Aiyedatiwa concluded his message with prayers for peace, prosperity and good health for residents of the state.

“May Almighty Allah accept your prayers, sacrifices, and good deeds, and grant you and your families abundant blessings, good health, and prosperity.”
